Seeds of Hope

I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have a childhood crush on a boy, ten years older than you. Yet you remain the very best of friends. For Miriam Troyer, she kept that secret buried deep inside even though the feelings she had for Mark Byler have never changed. She had hoped that time and distance might change all that, but since Mark had moved away to the big city to follow his dreams of becoming an attorney, those familiar feelings remained. Even though he was now engaged to a young woman, Tiffany who was just like the jewelry maker, high maintenance and wealthy beyond measure, just the right kind of wife for an up and coming successful lawyer.

When Mark receives a letter from his grandfather to come to Paradise, Pennsylvania, he worries that his grandfather might be ill. He has never written to him before asking for anything, and when he doesn't return Mark's calls, he fears the worst. Yet all that John Byler wanted was a chance to talk to Mark in hopes of convincing him that unless he accepted taking over his farm, it would be sold and given to someone other than a Byler to run. He had hoped to stir those feelings inside him long ago when he used to visit his grandfather on the farm during his summers away. But he could't just walk away from the life he had now, and there was no way that Tiffany would have anything to do with farming.

So when a high profile case of Mark's suddenly takes a turn for the worst, his law firm insists that he take some time off to let things die down in the public's eye. The only place left for him to go, is back to his grandfather's farm to help him work the harvesting season and payback all those who have helped his grandfather for all those years, and maybe that includes Miriam Troyer who has spent her days bringing meals to his grandfather so he wouldn't have to fend for himself. Now she just hopes that she can keep those long-time feelings tucked inside because as things stand now, there is no hope for her and Mark to have anything romantic happen between them. For now, she will just do her best to be the friend he needs.

I received Seeds of Hope by Barbara Cameron compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Gilead Publishing. This is such an incredible novel that conveys the need for loyalty and love of family. It goes beyond what others might want especially in the big city of Philadelphia, who seemed to distance themselves from the negative publicity even his fiancè, Tiffany. It is a valuable lesson on what we define as important to us, and Mark soon realizes that money can't buy everything he once thought it could and that the love of close family and friends is indeed priceless. Discussion questions are included at the conclusion of this book that would make it the perfect choice for book clubs. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and can't wait for the next novel in the Harvest of Hope series.

Home To Paradise

It is hard to accept it when someone you love, simply doesn't love you the way you want. Even after you have grown up with them your whole life and at one point confessed their undying love for you. But after all these years of simply being away in the English world, Rose Anna Zook can't seem to forget the man she had hoped she would marry one day, John Stoltzfus. What makes matters even more complicated is the fact that both of her older sisters have married John's older brothers. They seemed to have found a way to bring them back into the Amish community and leave behind their English ways. So what can Rose Anna do to win back the man of her dreams?

Her parents would say that trying to manipulate a man to love you again would be completely wrong in many ways and in the very eye of their Amish community. But little does Rose Anna know about the relationship between John and his father that initially drove all three brothers from their childhood home. It might be easy for them to simply forgive and forget, but John can't and won't do that. The last thing he wants to do is be forced into a marriage to Rose even if he had plans to do just that before he left. Who wouldn't want to marry Rose Anna? She was the picture of what every Amish man would ever dream for in a wife and more. But since he can barely hold down any job much less three part time jobs, what kind of life could he offer her when he doesn't even know what he wants for his future? He isn't even sure that God has any hints that he can offer.

Rose Anna doesn't know what to do but she does trust her heart. She knows even though well-meaning Amish men might be worth courting, her heart has always belonged to John. She can't give up just yet. She only needs to find a way to convince him that coming back home and joining the church would be worth anything the two of them together can face. But if he learns she is trying to force him into marriage, all bets would be off. Oh how did life ever become so complicated for a simple Amish couple?

I received Home to Paradise by Barbara Cameron compliments of Abingdon Press and Litfuse Publicity. This is the third and final book in the Coming Home Series, the first being Return to Paradise and Seasons of Paradise where readers get a chance to see how each of the couples reaffirmed their love for one another and found the romance that was always waiting for them despite the struggles each had to face to get there. I absolutely LOVE Barbara Cameron's novels because she truly makes you care deeply about her characters and what motivated them to do what they do in moving the storyline forward. I absolutely love the chemistry between John's employer and mentor Neil and how their relationship deepens in a surprising way. I give this novel a 5 out of 5 stars and even better is a handful of delicious Amish recipes and a discussion guide are included at the end of this novel.

Scraps of Evidence

Just what does a beautiful sewn blue quilt have to do with the latest serial murders running rampant in Florida? Just another mystery waiting to be discovered by best-selling author Barbara Cameron in her latest novel Scraps of Evidence that joins the Quilts of Love Series as book 14. The readers of this novel are bound to a true treat if you have read any of Barbara Cameron's novels. There is always an element of mystery and suspense to keep you reading long past it's time to head for bed because of your compelling urge to know who did it.

Join Detective Tess Villanova as she teams up with her new partner who just happens to be amazingly good-looking as well as single, Detective Logan McMillian from Chicago. Now they must work together when the latest case reopens the serial murder case when Tess lost her best friend as the first murder victim. Working hard to try and find the killer, when the latest body turns up, Logan gives the case a whole new perspective and a fresh set of eyes.

Like most colleagues that work together and spend so much time together, you get to know someone in ways you never would if you had met in a bar, and this gives Tess and Logan time to unwind and compare notes over lunches and dinners working their case. What they find is that they have more in common than simply being partners working together and the more time they spend with one another the more things begin to heat up and not just in the romance department.

I received Scraps of Evidence by Barbara Cameron compliments of Abingdon Press and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own unless otherwise noted. The best thing about any of the novels you find in the Quilts of Love series is why they do have a common thread running through them, you can pick up any of them and read them. They are not linked in any way other than having a quilt at the central theme. I've been a huge fan of Barbara Cameron's novels and was thrilled to read and review this one. I love the romantic tension that builds up between Logan and Tess and you just hope by the time you get to the end, they both come around to realize love is in the air. I easily give this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion. Included in this novel at the conclusion are some excellent discussion questions just perfect for book clubs as well as sneak peek into the next book in the series A Sky Without Stars.

A Road Unknown

If she ever wants a future, she will have to return home to resolve the issues from her past. Elizabeth Bontrager had run away from home even though she was twenty-years-old. She needed a break from being the oldest of nine children and having all the responsibility of helping to care for her brothers and sister was simply more than could handle. It was rapidly changing her outlook on what marriage and having her own family should look like, and now it was the furthest thing from her mind. Even though she was still in her rumschpringe, a period of deciding whether she wanted to be baptized into the Amish faith or walk away, she figured out some distance is what is needed to help her decide.

Only she didn't plan on fate intervening on a bus headed for Paradise, Pennsylvania as Saul Miller took a seat beside her. She had no plans to have a conversation with him and simply wanted to be left alone with her thoughts, but Saul had other things in mind. He wanted to know what someone as beautiful as Elizabeth would leave home if she wasn't taking vacation or enjoying her rumschpringe the way most Amish do. It seemed to Saul that she was running away from something and he hoped he might convince her to let him help in any way he could. Even if it was simply sharing a Big Mac and fries on the bus to Paradise.

Elizabeth plans to stay with her English friend Paula who is attending college to become a nurse and has offered Elizabeth a place to stay. When Paula learns that Elizabeth can cook, the agree to deal where Elizabeth will do the cooking and Paula will pay for the groceries. Now all Elizabeth has to do is find a job in Paradise. But with limited skills working in a fabric store in Goshen, she isn't sure it will be that easy, until fate plays its hand again. She literally is given a job at a country store selling Amish products while Miriam goes on maternity leave for a couple months. Guess who her employer is? Yup Saul Miller. Now it seems God has more in store for Elizabeth and Saul as they realize that all roads to the future lie where God guides.

I received A Road Unknown by Barbara Cameron compliments of Abingdon Press and Litfuse Publicity. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed are strictly my own. This is the first novel in the Amish Roads Series, from Barbara Cameron and I LOVED it. I always wondered if the Amish oldest girls often got tired of the weight of helping raise children and what would they do, how would they act. I think Barbara captured this very essence in Elizabeth's character. In no way was she disrespectful to her parents but simply looked for a breather to gain the right perspective. I love how Saul enabled her to see things clearly in the end and can't wait for the next novel in this series. I think it's going to be a favorite of mine. There is a readers discussion guide at the end along with a sneak peek at Crossroads, the next novel in this series. I personally give this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

Annie's Christmas Wish

It's not often you find a great Christmas novel with a compelling and lasting message regarding extended family, but I think Barbara Cameron has managed to do just that with Annie's Christmas Wish, book 4 in her Quilts of Lancaster County Series. This is perfect for those that enjoy Amish fiction or even a great contemporary romance because that is exactly the blend that Barbara has managed to create.

Annie Bontrager knows that she desires to become a writer at some point in her life. She carries around a notebook so that she can capture whatever thoughts or ideas come to her wherever she might be like all great writers do. She carries that inspiration from being around her step mother Jenny who was a famous newspaper reporter when she used to live in New York City. Jenny was raised English and thus was never really subject to the terms one usually finds in an Amish community. However when a bomb exploded while covering a story on children who were living in a war zone, she found comfort and love recovering in the Amish community of Paradise, Pennsylvania under her grandmother's care. It was there she discovered healing and love in the being reunited with David, Annie's father who was born Amish but decided not to join the church and in a way incorporated the love of both English and Amish upbringing in the children. Annie's mother died when she was just a child and had known no other mother but Jenny. To her, she was as real as a mother could be.

The family is on the brink of making a trip to New York City for vacation and Jenny hopes to show Annie not only the major tourist sites but also take her on a tour to her old office as well as to the New York Times, something Annie has only dreamed about doing for as long as she can remember. All she knows is that the desire to write is just as strong in her blood as it was for her mother and even though she knows at some point she might find love, she isn't the least bit interested right now.

Yet Aaron Beiler who has grown up with Annie as a close childhood friend has been making plans for what he believes will be his future with Annie working as a carpenter and furniture maker in town. Now if only he can convince Annie that his feelings go beyond that of just her friend and into something more. With the trip to New York coming up however, Aaron fears that Annie's love for writing might take her someplace she may never want to return. He just want's a wife that will take care of the home and any future children they might have and leave making a living up to him. What if Annie goes to New York and decides to never return? Is there anything he can do to change her mind?

I received Annie's Christmas Wish by Barbara Cameron compliments of Abingdon Press for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are mind alone. This is such an incredible book and one of the few that really reach to the heart of what really makes a family even though in this case it is a blended one. Annie sees the relationship with Jenny as that of what a mother/daughter relationship is as well as one with Jenny as her friend as well. Jenny never tries to replace Annie's birth mother but gives her the room and the time to accept her as she is in her role as a mother and wife in their family. It also shows how difficult our choices can be when it comes to the true desires of our hearts, in this case with Annie's love of writing and how she will have to make a choice that will forever change the relationship in her family and possibly her community as well. I rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars and think this makes the perfect Christmas addition to The Quilts of Lancaster County series!

Her Restless Heart - A Woman's Longing for Love and Acceptance Bible Study

One of the things I love most about Christian fiction is the wholesomeness of the message you find tucked between the pages of an amazing novel. You don't have to worry about questionable material or language because when it's written by trusted Christian authors, you are truly in for a treat. Now Abingdon Press has partnered with best selling author Barbara Cameron to bring you an added bonus, a Bible Study geared for women using one of Barbara Cameron's best selling novels as the stage. If you haven't read Her Restless Heart by Barbara Cameron, it's fine because the Bible Study book uses excerpts from the novel to help women understand our motivations sometimes for acting the way we do. Being overly busy, having issues with finding the time to get everything all done and even for finding love and acceptance from our family and friends.

Since April 22nd, Abingdon Women and Barbara Cameron have teamed up using Facebook to host a weekly online Bible Study working through the study a week at a time. Using videos and online conversations it has created quite a virtual Bible Study in a unique way. There are reflection questions to garner conversations about those items I mentioned above using the characters Barbara created in her novel as perfect examples of our need to find love and acceptance. Sometimes we are people pleasers, sometimes we are so busy attempting to do it all, we find ourselves coming up short on taking time out for ourselves without feeling guilty. Barbara calls that simply being restless. I know I can relate to that since my entire upbringing consisted on taking care of my family. My own family divorced when I was sick and being the oldest most of the responsibility feel on my shoulders to help my mom out as much as I could.

This was a role I didn't have a choice in and had to step into it because I loved and cared for my mom and my family. However looking back through Barbara's help through this study I realized I had some unresolved issues in missing out on my own childhood. I strived in doing more to gain the need for love and acceptance from my mother instead of finding a way to connect. Even to this day looking back on almost 50 years of my life, I can see the path I have worn with striving to do more while desperately searching for these needs in all my personal relationships. I know I didn't like doing it but wasn't sure how to find a way out.

Through this personal look at the characters in Barbara's book I could see myself relating to her character of Mary Katherine, who lives a typical and simple Amish lifestyle on her family's farm. Her father has a quick temper and harsh tongue and without realizing it, is taking a toll on Mary Katherine's self esteem. She doesn't have much of a role model in her mother since her mother is submissive and and meek. She doesn't speak up against her husband when he belittles Mary Katherine with his words and actions. Mary Katherine seeks the love and acceptance in her grandmother Leah who teaches her the value of her own self worth in ways she hasn't seen before.

I received Her Restless Heart: A Woman's Longing for Love and Acceptance by Barbara Cameron compliments of Abingdon Press and Abingdon Women for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. This is such a great study because I honestly feel so many women not only feel this way, but struggle to find a way out of this behavior to find the love and acceptance so many of us desire in our relationships. Each week of study in this book begins with a Scripture for the week and an excerpt from the novel, setting the stage for the five readings that follow. Each day's reading may be completed in about 20-30 minutes. As you work your way through these readings, you will encounter additional excerpts from the novel offering insights related to the respective themes, commentary on selected Scriptures, and personal application.

The interactive format guides you through the material, providing questions for reflection and response throughout each reading. You will have the opportunity to share some of these responses when you gather with your small group or online study group. Writing your thoughts in the space provided will prepare you for your weekly group sessions as well as capture the insights you are gaining on your journey.

Each day's reading concludes with an "As You Go" suggestion for the day - a question to ponder, a Scripture to consider, or some action to take. Then, at the end of each week's readings, you will find a special "About the Amish" section, answering common questions about Amish customs, traditions and practices. So if you feel discontent or unhappy with where you are or unsure about where you're headed, you might want to pick this book up. You can even join the online study already in progress and use it to go back to the beginning when it started in April and gain some much needed insight. I know it has had a profound way on my own personal life and I now feel more at ease in finding the love and acceptance I need in all my relationships. This study rates a 5 out of 5 stars. I only hope more authors will do this in the future. There is so much we can gain for using the fictional accounts we find our the novels we read to help us work through whatever issues we have in our lives. If you've missed out on any of this amazing study, the great news is you can locate all the resources to begin your own individual study or host your own small women's study, with a DVD, a Leader's Guide and Participants Guide below:

Heart in Hand

I love a great series of books whose characters are so well written, you'd swear they were real. Such is the case in Barbara Cameron's series Stitches in Time, in which I finished the third book, Heart in Hand. Stitches in Time is a shop owned by a wonderful family of women in Paradise, Pennsylvania. It is run by Leah, the grandmother and cousins, Naomi, Anna and Mary Katherine, each of them with a unique special skill like quilting, weaving or knitting. In the previous books in the series, we have gotten an in depth look at the lives of Naomi and Mary Katherine who have found their perfect husbands and now await their marriages. Yet Anna, the first to get married is also the first to experience true loss. Her husband Samuel died shortly after they got married when Leukemia claimed his life. Now living in the home they dreamed would one day be filled with children and love, Anna finds loneliness and thinks she will never find love again. Not after Samuel who she knew growing up and going to school with.

When she finds herself face to face however with Gideon Beiler and his daughter Sarah Rose who have come to the shop to help teach Sarah Rose some "women skills" since his wife, Mary also has died. Gideon is afraid that she will become more like a tom-boy unless she learns to quilt or knit. When Anna recommends learning to knit, she encourages Gideon to learn as well to help Sarah Rose when they are at home. She soon finds that the loneliness that her and Gideon share is something only two who have experienced loss can understand and it's the very thing that soon draws them together. When Sarah Rose starts having problems with school and struggling in her own grief in losing her mother, Anna becomes a friend to her to help her through the grieving process. She soon finds herself falling in love with Sarah Rose first and it's not long before she begins to fight her feelings about Gideon. She feels she is betraying her trust to love Samuel and struggles with wondering if God wishes her to fall in love again. Is it possible all this time, God has had someone in mind to help her move forward and put the past of loneliness and sorrow behind her?

I received Heart in Hand by Barbara Cameron compliments of Pump Up Your Book Tours and Abingdon Press for my honest review and really love how this book brings to a close all the relationships between these wonderful characters we've come to love. I can relate to Anna's own struggle in believing that the love she shared between her and Samuel can never be found again. It can't and as soon as she realizes that and accept Gideon as his own instead of trying to compare him with Samuel, she can soon come to grips with the feelings she has for him. Their's isn't going to be like those early years of romance, but now one of more maturity since life has already dealt them with a lot to handle. Even though this is part of a series, you can read this as a stand alone. Barbara does such a wonderful job in each of her books that you can immediately jump in and gain an understanding of where everyone is at. But to fully appreciate the series as I have, you need to start from the beginning. You can pick up Her Restless Heart and The Heart's Journey at your local retailer.  I easily rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and hope that Barbara might just squeeze one more out before ending this one!

I received Heart in Hand by Barbara Cameron compliments of Net Galley and Abingdon Press for my honest review and really love how this book brings to a close all the relationships between these wonderful characters we've come to love.

The Heart's Journey

The Heart's Journey from Barbara Cameron is the second book in the Stitches in Time Series, and one that everyone can relate to and a true delight if you're a fan of Amish fiction. In this one, the reader is once again transported to the charm of a delightful store, Stitches in Time operated by Leah and her grand-daughters whom we have met in her first book. This time the story deals with her granddaughter, Naomi who is wondering if her upcoming marriage to John is truly what God had in mind. It seems that John is taking his authority of being the man of the house to heart and tries to ensure that Naomi will obey him at all costs, even if it means man-handling her at times. No matter how hard Naomi tries to put on her best smile, however, her grandmother Leah can see right through it.

When she confronts Naomi about the relationship, she finally tells her the truth and that John is more than controlling. In fact, he has already hurt her physically but believes he can change, especially after how sorry he felt. Leah reminds Naomi that in the Amish world, once you marry the only way you can get out of a bad marriage is for one of you to die. That hits too close for home for Naomi and she agrees with Leah that perhaps they should break up. When Leah takes a nasty fall just outside of her shop, their Englisch driver, Nick comes to take her to the doctor. It is then that Naomi realizes that not all men can be as controlling as John and sees the true heart that lies within Nick.

Opportunity presents itself to head to Pinecraft, Florida with her grandmother to help her pass the time recovering from her fall where the climate is warm and oranges are as close as an arm's reach. Naomi is more than delighted when Nick offers to drive them from Paradise, Pennsylvania to Florida for a mini vacation and both Naomi and Nick discover that something is brewing beneath the surface for them both. However will they be able to find common ground with living in two different worlds or will John find Naomi and bring her back to her senses in more ways than one?

I received The Heart's Journey compliments of Abingdon Press and Pump Up Your Book Tours for my honest review and love the blending of the two worlds in the Amish fiction. Barbara Cameron takes the issue of abuse to a new level introducing it to her Amish character and then inviting the reader along for the ride to see how the Amish might deal with such an issue in their private world. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and can't wait for the third book in this series!!!

Her Restless Heart

Sometimes the words we speak can hurt people worse than any physical pain we can inflict on them. That's just what is happening to Mary Katherine. Finding solace and a place to heal her emotions and her heart and find the love she needs from family, she works for her Grandmother Leah at her store, Stitches in Time, along with her cousins Naomi and Anna. Her father is more than just mean and abrasive to her, he's also been that way to her mother. No longer able to tolerate his unkind words, and avoiding speaking out against her father, she leaves. She's the only child of her parents and finds it difficult that her father can treat her so cruel.

Perhaps that's why Mary Katherine has been avoiding falling in love with those Amish boys who seem to gather around her, most recently Jacob, a young man she grew up with and went to school with. However, Mary Katherine can only see him as the friend she grew up with even though it's obvious to everyone else that Jacob has more than friendly feelings for her. Yet with Mary Katherine still undecided on whether she wants to commit to the church just yet, she spends some time getting to know what she really wants out of life.

Her best friend is an English girl named Jaime, whose outrageous hair and clothing styles, have most of the Amish church community frowning. Thinking that this will only encourage Mary Katherine to leave the Amish community, more and more of the elders and bishop continue to pressure her to make a decision and soon. They are even going so far as to criticize her weaving creations and quilts for sale at Stitches In Time saying she is moving away from the Amish traditions.

In her latest series of Amish books, Stitches in Time, Barbara Cameron is introducing the readers to a new cast of characters in the first book, Her Restless Heart. In this book, all three girls are seeking the love and attention of men in their lives and it seems like only Grandmother Leah has just the right advice to dispense over a cup of hot tea. Ah how we all wish we had a grandmother like her. Unwilling to push and pressure to make the woman face their difficult choices ahead, Leah merely provides a willing ear to listen while they pour out their feelings. Deep down inside she can only pray they will come to make the right decision in the end.

I received Her Restless Heart compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and I can see why so many readers are now her fans of her Amish series. She writes them so well readers can not only relate to the characters but more importantly to the story and issues the characters are dealing with. I, myself, can completely relate to Mary Katherine, having an emotionally abusive father growing up. I can relate to her feeling less than worthy and dealing with a lifetime of self esteem issues never seeing herself as good enough, even in God's eyes. I found healing in hearing not only the advice from Leah but also in Jacob's kindness as her friend. This book does provide needed healing to restless hearts everywhere and I highly recommend this one with a 5 out of 5 stars!
