Let Food Be Your Medicine
Is it possible that the very foods we eat are not only contributing to the many diseases and illnesses that are taking our lives before their time, but the foods we crave are what is feeling things like cancer, dementia, heart disease and diabetes? Not only is it the types of foods but also when we eat them, in what amounts and that the very "good" foods we grew up on have been so genetically modified, our government and FDA no longer have to provide disclaimers for the products we find our own shelves. It is no wonder that obesity and disease are running so high here in America while other countries are refusing to offer these types of products or even incorporate them into their diets at all. What if there was a way to drastically change your medical prognosis simply by giving up the food that is killing you? Would you be willing to do it?
Sadly most are not willing to give up certain foods like wheat, dairy, cheeses, salts, sugars and other foods for the sake of not only possibly eliminating things like diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, ADHD, mental illnesses, along with getting healthier, losing weight and living longer. In Let Food Be Your Medicine by Don Colbert, MD, offers some advice in this book on how simple dietary changes have been proved to prevent or reverse diseases like the ones mentioned above and provides some great tips along the way such as which fruits should diabetics avoid and which ones they should eat. This is exactly what this book is all about, living a healthy lifestyle that both treats and prevents disease. And that is living life to the fullest and I am so excited to begin my own journey.
We all know that anytime you make an appointment to see a doctor, most of the time, all you walk home with is a prescription to treat the symptoms of what you went in to see them for. "Most of what doctors learn after graduation is taught to them by pharmaceutical reps, so it is really hard to fault the doctors completely for this. They are bogged down, and don't have the time, money or resources to do what I did. I don't fault the doctors but I do fault the system. Doctors are so busy treating patients, doing paperwork, and figuring out how to bill for services, much less be paid, that we have come to rely on training from the pharmaceutical world. Doctors need to take continuing education classes every two years to stay licensed. Imagine if all medical doctors took just two classes on preventive health. That would transform things." (pg 21-22).
After my own husband suffered a massive heart attack, in meeting with his cardiologist, we learned some surprising and chilling facts, that most men and women who are having cardiovascular issues are doing so much younger and younger than ever before, and he firmly believes that diet is the root cause. There are some incredible tips and food plans inside this easy to read book and Dr. Don Colbert used his own medical issues to come up with the ideal prescription that all of us need if we want to rule out these illnesses, diseases and live much longer. Learn what foods relieve ADHD and Autism and which ones contribute to it, learn how inflammation plays a key role in causing so many of the life threatening diseases and illness today and how some simple diet changes can improve your life and thus eliminating all those prescription costs. If it is so simple, then why aren't people willing to give it a try?
I received Let Food Be Your Medicine by Don Colbert MD, compliments of Worthy Publishing for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. What a great way to begin 2016, with a healthy lifestyle, living longer, having more energy and eliminating such things like diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity while doing so! I highly recommend this book and can't wait to learn more from Dr. Colbert who specializes in anti-aging through the things we do, eat and how we manage our life. For me, this one easily garners a 5 out of 5 stars. It is simple to read and keeps you engaged that you can read it in one sitting.

The Decision
We have all made decisions in our lifetime that we often times wonder if it was the right one. Many times we wish we had the opportunity to go back and change some of those decisions as we have seen how they have played out in our life or in the lives of others. Jonah Miller was one such person. After being left at the altar by the love of his life, he has opted to start over again someplace else where the memories aren't quite so fresh when they are revisited from Pennsylvania to Illnois.
It is there where he learned to find love again with Elaine Schrock. In fact he wasn't even looking for love again and then again neither was she. They are literally on the verge of watching all their dreams for a future come true, when tragedy strikes and Elaine's grandfather dies. These are the only parents she has known since they have cared for her since she was little when her own parents died. In his dying words, Elaine's grandfather begged her to please take care of her grandmother, Edna. It was a promise that Elaine would ensure she would keep. After all how to you pay back your grandparents for raising you? It was the very least she could do.
When Edna begins to have dizzy spells and is a bit more than forgetful, Elaine and the community just believe that Edna is still in the grieving process and simply trying to move forward before she is physically ready. But when those situations become dangerous like wandering off and forgetting where she is, or leaving the oven on while making cookies, Elaine believes there might be something more going on. The doctor determines that besides being diabetic, Edna is also experiencing dementia. How will Elaine be able to move forward with Jonah, when she now has to face caring for her grandmother? Will Elaine's decision to forget her own future be the very best one God has in mind for her? Right now, she can't see how it can be.
I received The Decision by Wanda E. Brunsetter compliments of Nancy Berland Public Relations and Barbour Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. This is the first novel in the Prairie State Friends Series and it is one I truly love. Relying on her own experiences in dealing with caring for a loved one with dementia, Wanda captivated the beautiful way the Amish care for their loved ones. They would never consider putting them in a facility to care for the aging, but instead the entire community rallies around to help in any way they can. Dementia has to be one of the most difficult illnesses to deal with because it robs our loved ones of their memories, the most priceless treasures we have. It is hard for both to deal with the effects and that comes across so well in this novel. There is a discussion guide at the end along with some great recipes. I can't wait for the next one in this series and for that reason it deserves a full 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.
