Altar Egos DVD Giveaway and Review

So what does one do when taking over an existing church from his father's legacy? Well you'd think based on the lack of church attendance, you would consider making some changes to invite more people to want to join right? Well that is precisely what Pastor John (Robert Amaya, Courageous and Moms Night Out) wants to do. During the service the existing church choir makes it difficult for anyone to stay focused and awake including the elderly organist so he begins to look for ways to increase church attendance. His biggest obstacle is Mary Margaret, the head chairperson on the church board who believes that change isn't something that the church requires. She begins to question whether he is the right man for heading up the church after all.

She takes it upon herself to organize a strike against his leadership beginning with the removal of the church choir, which has the remaining church members in a fuss. They want the choir back. Mary Margaret has also called for a church board meeting to discuss Pastor John's removal and subsequent replacement. If only he could find a way to attend that meeting. He convinces his thespian son, Jack to help him find the perfect disguise so he can go unnoticed as an elderly man in their meeting. However Jack doesn't think his dad can pull it off simply because he looks like an older man. So Jack dresses up as an elderly man, called Frank while his dad goes under the name Milo and they walk the mall trying out their disguises.

Well the role play is a success in one right, they now find themselves committed to joining the church members for meetings, a Christmas party and even a dinner meeting with the potential new pastor all while remaining in disguise. I won't reveal all the high jinks and humor that comes along with this, but you can tell from the movie's title, this one was well thought out. The theme of loving the unlovable, reconciliation and change versus tradition will be one the entire family will enjoy. This movie also stars Erin Bethea, (Fireproof).

I Punched Myself in the Eye

I guess when we look back at certain times of our lives, we can find humor in almost everything. Most people would laugh at things once we have walked through them and show us that joy is prevalent, we just missed it. I believe God shows us things that we often miss because we are so caught up in our own problems, but Pamela Capone has captured some of these in her book, I Punched Myself In the Eye. It is filled with random things that have happened in her life, some laced with humor, things to make you smile and some to make you realize that it doesn't always have to be right in the world to appreciate the small miracles that a smile can bring.

Pam has classified these random stories as messays, a combination of messes and essays designed to get you to see self-sabotage, imperfections and amazing grace sprinkled throughout our messy lives. There are so many different stories, 67 in fact, that one is guaranteed to make you smile if not laugh out loud or LOL as my teens would say.  Take a look at these titles, The Sale Starts at NO, Gummy Worms, Pam on the Lam, Garage Key, Lab Work, Little Miss Understood, the Dash, Take the Cannoli, The Mermaid Tale or REI. You can read them in any order but you can always find some common ground in them.

As Pam quotes about this book, "This is a collection of non-linear essays, which means you are free to move about the cabin. Some friends and family were mentioned by name. I love an awful lot of people who were not mentioned, but that's no barometer of my love for them or their value in my life. The story lands where the story lands. I'm just the catcher."

For me this is a great book to read when you are feeling low, because it reminds us that we take this life to serious at times. None of us are getting out of it alive! So we should attempt to find the joy and laughter in it whenever we can. It may not be our own situation but there is a saying that laughter is the best medicine. I would advise that you take one a day. For me my favorite is The Nerve, a time when Pam had to deal with a pinched nerve and had to deal with some of the neighborhood boys when she could barely move. For me this one rated a 4 out of 5 stars!

What's So Funny? My Hilarious Life

If you have been around as long as I have, you might just remember Tim Conway, the comedian who graced our television sets with his delightful and unforgettable skits from such memorable shows like The Carol Burnett Show, McHale's Navy as well as movies like Disney's The Apple Dumpling Gang and The Shaggy D.A. But one thing remains clear, he is definitely committed to making people life and that in itself is truly a wonderful gift we all need more of.

In the book, "What's So Funny? My Hilarious Life by Tim Conway and Jane Scovell, the reader gets a look at the life behind the scenes of what made Tim who he is today. Reminiscing about his childhood living in Chagrin Falls, Ohio being the only child to Dan and Sophia Conway, we immediately get a sense that this isn't your usual autobiography. Written in the same manner that we all know Tim there are laughs scattered through this book to guarantee not only a smile but a laugh or two. There are the stories of Tim's mom, Sophia who was so conscientious with money that when it came to wallpapering his room as a young boy, she refused to spend money on wall paper paste and created her own from flour and water. The only problem is during the summer with the heat, it baked the paper and caused it to peel off the walls.

He shares another great example from his childhood about his parents quirks and how much they truly enjoyed each others company.

"They liked to do things together, like dancing. One time they decided to take dancing lessons at a local studio. At the first lesson they were given a strip of paper with two sets of footprints on it, one for the man and the other for the woman. It was a basic dance pattern. The idea was to take the sheet home, put it on the floor, put a record on the phonograph, and step on the appropriate footprints in time with the music. Simple, right? Not for my parents. When I came home from school, I found them standing in the middle of the living room with the music baring from the phonograph. They looked at me sheepishly and asked if I could help them. Help them? How could I help them when what they'd done was cut the footprints from the paper and pasted them on the bottom of their shoes? I guess they figured that would make the shoes magically do the steps. When it didn't happen they were stopped in their glued-on tracks." (pg 33).

There are so many great memories captured in this book from his encounters and friendships with Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Steve Allen, Ernie Anderson, Don Knotts and so many others that this is guaranteed to be a memoir like any other. There are practical jokes he played on police officers, Frank Sinatra, John Wayne as kids from his childhood growing up in school. I think some of the best parts are his time spent on the Carol Burnett show. It had me going back to YouTube to watch such notable episodes like The Dentist skit with Harvey Korman who Tim was challenged to make break down during the skit with laughter. This is truly a great book to enjoy.

There are some great pictures capture inside that gives you an inside look at the love and laughter as well as personal friendships he has managed to capture after all these almost 80 years with us. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars! Thank you Tim for the memories and the laughter after all these years! You've made life a true joy!
