Behind The Scenes

Fans of traditional regencies will definitely LOVE Jen Turano's latest novel Behind the Scenes! Miss Permilia Griswold is what society has deemed a wallflower, but she has the spirit to not let anyone tell her what she can and can't do, especially since her stepmother, Ida and stepsister, Lucy seem intent on making sure that she finds a suitable match and if not, to do nothing to embarrass their attempts to secure the right man for Lucy. Mrs. Ida Webster, a formidable lady one learned rather quickly not to cross - and a lady who staunchly believed a woman's place was in the home, not traveling around the country participating in...business.

For Permilia she loved being considered a wallflower. It was the only time she could travel with ease behind the scenes, observing society without anyone noticing. This would help her to blend in better at all the society functions Ida and Lucy insist she attend and one that would allow her to gather facts to write about in her society column under the pseudo name of Miss Quill. Only in this circumstance at the Vanderbilt ball, Permilia is about to face her greatest challenge, Mr. Asher Rutherford of Rutherford and Company. He is a self-made man who is society's greatest eligible bachelor who finds the untamed and unconventional spirit of Permilia to his liking for some odd reason. She holds nothing back and isn't about to conform to what Ida or Lucy deem appropriate for her. All she desires is to work with her father in his mining business and has taken it upon herself to learn all she can about the business world.

When she learns of a plot to murder Asher Rutherford while hiding in the Vanderbilt mansion, she will do whatever it takes to ensure that no harm comes to him, even if it means tarnishing her reputation. She even manages to gain some help from other wallflowers in an effort to be taken serious, of which Asher is convinced that Permilia has simply jumped to conclusions. Nevertheless, he finds simply being in her company to be like a moth to a flame only he needs to make sure that he doesn't get burned in the process. After all, most of society shops within the doors of Rutherford and Company for all their latest fashions and he needs to ensure that he doesn't do anything rash to make headlines in the local gossip columns.

I received Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano compliments of Baker Publishing Group and Net Galley. There is something to Jen Turano's writing style that casts a hook into you and you don't want this novel to end. Her character of Permilia is well-conceived, strong and determined and willing to not be a role model for what society deems is appropriate. She wants more out of life and isn't waiting around for a man to provide it. While she definitely has gumption, she also walks a tight-rope to ensure she doesn't embarrass her father and cause undo harm to his business while she seeks to find her own way in the world. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and find myself relating to Permilia as that would likely be how I would have been in her world. No fear, bold and full of passion! This is the first novel in the Apart From The Crowd series and one I am looking forward to!

Playing the Part

"She was not searching for a knight in shining armor, she was searching for a partner, someone she could share her experiences with - not someone who'd want to take over her life and make everything easy for her. Miss Lucetta Plum was certainly not a lady who would enjoy easy, at least not all of the time. She was too complicated, too accomplished, and too intelligent to live a life of mundane pleasantness. She was also a lady who deserved an equal partner, not a gentlemen who wanted to set her up on a shelf, away from the messiness of living, something he'd been determined to do." (pg 146-147).

Lucetta Plum has been known for playing all the right parts in life and for her male admirers, they have become enamored with the roles she plays until they spend some time and truly getting to know her. This is precisely why she has hired Mr. Skukman as her body guard, to keep away anyone who has any ideas of becoming married to Miss Plum. When her step father Nigel shows up hoping his latest sob story might provoke some sympathy on her end to sign over the deed to the property where her mother and Nigel currently live, she is about to disappoint him once again. Knowing his chronic addictions for cards and drink, she has turned the deed over to someone for safe keeping instead. Much to her horror, she learns that Nigel has agreed to turn Miss Plum over to Silas Ruff instead as he has become a vigilant stalker of her recent fame as an actress.

For Lucetta, the situation has turned dire as she knows Silas will stop at nothing to reclaim what he believes is rightly his, even if that means it is Lucetta, herself. So she flees to the safety of Ravenwood, a place own by Abigail Hart's grandson Bram Haverstein. Abigail has been kind enough to allow Lucetta to stay with her but realizes the situation she is in by staying with her. Most men can follow the trail to where Lucetta currently lives and it will be no time before Silas Ruff does the same. So they set up a serious of decoy's to lead Silas on the wrong trail having quite a few well known men in her life, dress up like her to lead him on a wild goose chase. She just doesn't expect to wind up running for her life from a series of unfortunate events at Ravenwood, under the watchful or not so watchful eye of Bram Haverstein. Rumors of the estate being haunted abound and soon Lucetta will have her own run in with something that goes walking in the night.

I received Playing the Part by Jen Turano compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside from a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest and personal review. This is such a great novel from the perspective of looking for something with a flair for humor amid a bit of mystery and of course romance in the end. I was laughing at some of the downright funny things that Miss Plum was able to pull off using her reputable acting talents and poor Mr. Haverstein who is in love with Miss Plum and even more so when he get to know the real her behind all the parts she plays. This one is a hands down 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and now I can't wait to go back and discover the previous novels of Jen's involving her best friends who we meet up with in this one. This is the 3rd novel in the Class of Their Own Series!!!

A Talent for Trouble - Giveaway and Review

Just how much trouble could it be being the wife of a pastor? For Felicia Murdock, she will soon find out it is definitely more than she could ever dream of. She dreams of trying something new and she finds it is more work than she dreamed of trying to live up to her expectations of what a pastor's wife should look like. Sometimes we spend so much time trying to live up to everyone's expectations of what you should be doing, that in a sense you lose who you really are. That is just is what happens to Felicia in the latest novel from best selling author Jen Turano who is definitely on my MUST HAVE list of books. Anything that she has written, I have loved and she truly speaks to a place deep inside a women's heart in all of us. Perhaps that is why I find myself relating to her characters she creates in her novels. Yet in this case with all her best intentions, the pastor, Michael Fraiser, she believes she was destined to marry, instead marries someone else.

Now suddenly everything she believes is right is called into question and soon Felicia does a 180 from where she was at and finds the real person beneath it all. One that might even turn the head of Grayson Sumner, Lord Sefton, a respectable New York business, who is asked to lift Felicia's spirits. Soon however their personalities collide and it's the fire between them that has you rooting for a romance between the two. I mean, who doesn't want someone like Felicia who has just spent the last four years of her life transforming herself for a man, to suddenly fall into the arms of someone like Grayson!

Jen Turano definitely writes her female characters with a strength and sass that for the period in history is rewarding. Deep down inside, you know despite all that proper upbringing is a girl who is striving to just break out and be herself instead of what society dictates for her, just like Felicia. Fortunately for Felicia, her friends Agatha Watson and Eliza have just what she needs to get her out of feeling so down in the dumps. They have all kinds of outlandish plans to place Grayson and Felicia together and at times leaves Grayson being the one to rescue her when they turn ugly. All this just sets the stage for love to blossom and for the two to fall in love before the end of the novel. But it can't be wrapped up just that pretty. Soon Felicia discovers that Grayson has a secret past and once she learns the truth, will she really want him after all?

A Change of Fortune

Miss Eliza Sumner had hoped that she could go completely unnoticed as the Governness for the Watson family helping to raise and mold their young girls. However when she is called to attend a dinner party last minute and has to dawn a gown that is too over large to fit her figure, she does what anyone would, she tries to pull it off long enough to go back to her room. But when she hits a snag, quite literally in her dress and winds up face down on the dining room floor, it's an unlikely hero that comes to her rescue, Mr. Hamilton Beckett, who seems to be the most handsome and eligible bachelor in New York's elite. He is completely smitten by her down to earth charm even though she attempts to push him away. Will they be fated to run into one another under different circumstances?

When Eliza learns through a conversation at the dinner party that the man she's been following since leaving London, is passing himself off as a member of the English aristocracy known as Mr. Bartholomew Hayes. He was also making excellent use of her money, living in a mansion that was beyond spectacular, and outfitting it with the latest furnishings evidenced by the numerous delivery wagons that had pulled up with annoying frequency while Eliza lurked on the opposite side of the street.

It had taken every ounce of self-control she possessed to refrain from storming through the front door and confronting the man who'd been her father's most trusted employee, a trusted employee who'd turn out to be nothing more than a lying, thieving, no-good scoundrel who'd managed to systematically divert her father's vast fortune into his own accounts sometime during the months surrounding her father's death.

Her temper began to simmer when she realized she wouldn't be in her current predicament if Mr. Hayes had refrained from taking her very last pound. If he would have left her a smidgen of her father's fortune, she would still be in London, basking in the admiration of her friends and her fiance', instead of residing in New York without a single friend and possessed of an ex-fiance'.

Who would have thought a gentlemen could turn from his intended simply because said intended suddenly found herself without funds? But apparently, Lord Wrathshire, or Lawrence as he'd insisted she call in him private had been more enthralled with her fortune than her sparkling personality. He had heard rumors about her father wasting his fortune away, and since there was now an insurmountable blemish staining her family name, he could no longer remain engaged to her. After making that proclamation, he turned and walked out of the room without saying another world. She won't stop until she finds a way to reclaim what is her's and head straight back to London.

I received A Change in Fortune by Jen Turano compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. I love the saga that poor Eliza Sumner found herself in despite the time in history when it would be virtually unheard of for a woman to hunt down a man who left her penniless and ruined her family name, yet Eliza is that strong-willed and determined and it's that strength that makes her instantly likeable and has you rooting for her the whole way through this novel. If you love historical romances with a bit of a quirky twist, then you will LOVE this one. I rate it a 4 out of 5 stars.
