The Returning

It all boils down to the ultimate show-down between good and evil in a Christian Dystopian look into the future with Rachelle Dekker's Seer series in her final novel The Returning. Ancient prophecy has always pointed to a future event that most thought would never happen. A thing written about with no basis for coming true, at least to those living in Authority City. Anyone who opposes those in power or has any idea other that confirming to the well-being of all citizens is simply sent to the re-education center to be administered with a serum known as the Genesis Formula. It makes them comply without thinking for themselves and now they become part of the collective minds of those running the city.

However, there is a band of rebels who have managed to leave the city despite all attempts to capture them. Within this band of fugitives are seven individuals who have been called to fulfill the prophecy of returning those in Authority city back to the way God had intended. Led by a man named Aaron who has shown them the ultimate way of living, no one knows if he is really a man or simply a figment of their over active imaginations. He has always shown them the real purpose of their lives and how those in power in Authority City have forced those in opposition to be re-educated or eliminated. He has uncovered the darkness that has been led to breed uncontrolled by those who have a sinister purpose in mind.

Now Carrington and Remko Brandt have to put their trust in Aaron to lead this team of prodigals on their higher purpose to release those in bondage using their unique specialized gifts granted to them by God to redeem those who are lost in an effort to set them free and restore the city back to the grand vision God has for them. However it is a difficult decision for the Brandt's since their oldest daughter, Elise, was captured during a raid outside the city and it has been years since that day. Not knowing if she is dead or alive, they trust that their youngest daughter Kennedy whose has vowed to find her if she is still alive and bring her back home. Just when this team heads out back to the city to fulfill their prophecy, an army marches against those living in sanctuary waiting for their return to take them captive and force them to submit to the darker authority now controlling Authority City.

I received The Returning by Rachelle Dekker compliments of Tyndale House Publishers and Net Galley. For fans of such series like Divergent and the Hunger Games, you will love this Christian take on a similar story line. Out of the entire series, I have to say my all-time favorite was The Choosing, the first novel. I love the different twist on the value people place on their looks and self esteem and how some were chosen and others who aren't are forced into a life of serving others within the city as outcasts. Dekker does an exceptional job at reminding readers between each novel what had happened prior so it is easy to pick up the action as you immerse yourself into each subsequent novel. This one was a bit predictable in some ways as you could figure out how things would need to be resolved before the series reached its conclusion. I would give this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion however.

The Demi-Monde: Winter - Giveaway and Review

The Demi-Monde:

1. A subclass of society whose members embrace a decadent lifestyle and evince loose morals.
2. A shadow world where the norms of civilized behavior have been abandoned.
3. A massive multiple-player simulation technology that re-creates in a wholly realistic cyber-milieu the threat-ambiance and no-warning aspects of a hi-intensity, deep-density, urban, Asymmetric Warfare Environment.
4. Hell.

Welcome to the Demi-Monde, the ultimate in virtual reality - a military training ground and vivid, simulated world of cruelty and chaos run by psychopaths, madmen and fanatics. If you die here...you die in the Real World.

In the year 2018, the Demi-Monde is the most sophisticated, complex, and unpredictable computer simulation ever created, devised specifically to train soldiers for the nightmarish reality of urban warfare. A virtual world of eternal civil conflict, its thirty million inhabitants - "Dupes" - are ruled by cyber-duplicates of some of history's cruelest tyrants: the fanatical Nazi butcher Reinhard Heydrich; Stalin's arch executioner Lavrentii Beria; the torture-loving Grand Inquisitor Tomas de Torquemade; the Reign of Terror's bloodthirsty mastermind Maximilien Robespierre.

But something has gone horribly wrong inside the Demi-Monde, and the U.S. president's daughter Norma, has been lured into this terrifying shadow world, only to be trapped there. Her last hope of rescue is Ella Thomas, an eighteen-year-old jazz singer and very reluctant heroine. But when Ella infiltrates the Demi-Monde and begins her hunt for Norma, she soon discovers the walls containing the evils of this simulated environment are dissolving - and the Real World is in far more danger than anyone knows.

I received The Demi-Monde Winter by Rod Rees compliments of William Morrow, a division of Harper Collins for my honest review and what I discovered between the pages was a very intense novel combining fantasy and science fiction coupled with an epic adventure that holds a very real possibility considering where our gaming industry is headed. Blending a darker version of an Avatar like environment set in the mid 1870's, the world worst criminal minds now run one of five different districts in order to recreate the world most chaotic training environment for the military. Only when those men are captured along with the president's daughter and the last remaining portal remains the only way in, an unlikely heroine is offered 5 million dollars to go on a search and rescue mission to bring her back no matter the cost. I rate this novel a 4.5 out of 5 stars for some strong language used by the characters.

The Night Eternal

When the unthinkable happens to the entire world, chaos will soon reign and humans will be farmed and hunted. So is the premise behind the latest novel from Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan in The Night Eternal.

For just two hours a day, a faint muted light falls upon the earth as sunlight, leaving the rest of the day in darkness. This is the result of nuclear fallout that now blankets the earth and creates prime living conditions for a new race called strigoi, a type of vampire that is infected with a worm like virus. The Master, as he is called, has formed a new race on earth, the strigoi, that live only to feed and with the only way to kill them being the use of silver weapons and nuclear devices, the strigoi have been collecting them as a way to ensure their own survival from the remaining humans who would like to see them destroyed.

The humans that remain that are unwilling or unable to fight back are kept in collective farms, herded like livestock, throughout the world in various cities, as a way to ensure that the strigoi will always have enough food. B+ blood being the most sought after are treated far better than the rest of the human race and the elderly are dispatched quickly. Only a handful of humans seek to uncover the secret that lies within a silver bound book called the Occido Lumen entrusted to them by a man called Setrakian. In it contains the way to destroy the Master and the muted race of strigoi and hopefully restore the world before all hope is lost. Will they be able to decipher the book before they are all hunted down and eliminated?

I received this book compliments of William Morrow, a division of Harper Collins Publishers for my honest review. I saw this book comparable to the movie I Am Legend but with more in depth story content. A warning to some of my readers that this book does contain a fair amount of profanity but overall the story is well written and thought out. I would rate this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars and for those the like a story that pits good against evil, then this is definitely a book for you. This is book 3 in The Strain Trilogy. The God Hater

In today's age, video games and virtual realities are becoming a bit of the norm. Yet what we don't see is how they overlap and parallel one another.

In this technological age, artificial intelligence has been toyed with but never fully mastered, until now. Using nanobots to replicate a single cell and transfer that information to a computer has been simple, but we know the human body is made up of more individual cells than we could count, much less taking all the information and storing it in one place.

We have discovered a way to compile that information using a simple program like the ones that compile information for SETI, that has given us access to personal computers when they are not being turned on to run our data through. Billions and billions of them are being linked together to translate this data and create a virtual world in which, we, are the computer generated likenesses in a new virtual world.

The one problem is that free will of the characters can not be tampered with, they must chose their own fate, and every single program up to this point has lead to self destruction of the race. Now it's up to Nicholas Mackenzie, an professor with a rare intellect at disputing the creation theory, now has the chance to prove himself correct or admit defeat.

I received the book, The God Hater by Bill Myers, compliments of Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Tours for my honest review, and was blown away by the storyline and how much it overlaps where we, as a world and technology are headed. The parallels in the lives of Nicholas Mackenzie and his virtual alter ego, and that of the son he lost at the age of five, teaches us all a different version of the price that is paid daily for the individual choices we make and what differences we can make in the lives of those around us.

I love this book immensely for the way it uses a combination of The Matrix, Tron, and The Sims, to showcase to us all where we are headed if we choose to follow the virus. Hands down one of the best books I've read to date, with an outstanding 5 out of 5 star rating. This is a must for anyone who is interested in what the story of redemption is really all about. For those of you that love all that high tech, virtual reality and nanobots, this is one written just for you.
