Faith of Our Fathers - DVD Review and Giveaway

As Veteran's Day approaches, I can think of no greater tribute than to offer a great review and giveaway of the DVD Faith of Our Fathers from Pure Flix Entertainment and Flyby Promotions. My father and mother both served during the Vietnam War and theirs was not the story that was glorified and honored when they returned like those of the WW1 and WWII campaigns.

In Faith of Our Fathers conveys the story of two men Eddie and Steven who in 1969 find themselves fighting side by side in the Vietnam war, and soon become more than friends and partners, but true brothers in the war so to speak. As the war continues they both write to the sons, John Paul and Wayne they have in the states through a series of letters hoping their words might inspire and encourage their sons should they return from the war. However after a five day mission to retrieve fallen comrades, they both lose their lives.

Now twenty five years later, John Paul and Wayne meet as John Paul tries to find the man his father talked so valiantly about in hopes of learning more about his father, but when he comes across Wayne, he is nothing but a bitter alcoholic who doesn't want anything to do with the father he feels has abandoned him. Yet he holds the only key to John Paul understanding his own father, and he manages to convince Wayne to journey with him to the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC, as Wayne gives him letters from his own father for a price along the way. They two will understand more than they ever thought possible as the movie takes viewers back through a series of flashbacks to help understand the bond that their fathers shared and how it will forever change their own perspectives of who they believed their fathers were.

I received Faith of Our Fathers compliments of Pure Flix Entertainment and FlyBy Promotions for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own personal ones. This DVD runs 96 minutes and contains special features such as, The Heart of Faith of our Fathers, Honoring Father's Day, Commemorating Memorial Day, Si Robertson Interview, and Stephen Baldwin Interview. Candace Cameron Bure, Rebecca St. James, Stephen Baldwin and Si Robertson star in this amazing movie. It parallels the story of fathers and sons, twenty five years apart, and shows how they are bound together forever which is such a worthy tribute to our veterans this Veteran's Day!

Travelers Rest

Jane Morrow is finding her future a difficult road ahead. What she had planned for isn't what lies in front of her. So many decisions and not sure which way to go, she searches in vain for the answer. Seth Ballentine has returned home from the war in Iraq and she couldn't be more happier. When he left, all she ever wanted was for him to return home even though she never wanted him to leave. Asking her to marry him before he left gave her something to hope for along with a promise he'd come back to her.

Now that he has, he doesn't want to see her. Asks her not to come visit or see him. Yet Jane's still in love with Seth and can't understand how his feelings have changed for her until she makes a trip to visit him. She steps into the lobby of the Asheville Veterans Administration Medical Center complex and asks for directions to his room. On the fifth floor, she enters his room and finds him looking so much worse than she ever expected. Losing much of the weight he had before, she braced herself for his reaction. When he looked up at her, she expected to see love in his eyes, but now only anger appeared there. He was mad she had gone against his wishes and come to see him.

He tells Jane that he wants her to forget about him, to take the engagement ring she's still wearing and sell it. Take a trip, go on a cruise. He's not here for her anymore. Only Jane thinks she has prepared herself in the last six months to deal with Seth. After everything she has read, she still has hope that they can still be married, she still is in love with him and wants to be his wife. As much as he tries to discourage her, Jane insists they can make this work. Seth is now completely paralyzed after being shot in the neck. The only thing he wishes is that he had died like he believed God had planned instead of being brought back as less than a man.

In the latest novel by Ann Tatlock, Travelers Rest, brings the readers into a difficult time for both Jane and Seth. Jane's trying to maintain hope that they can still make their relationship work while Seth is trying to find hope to keep on living in his current state, despite how much he may recover some of his movement. He knows he will never be the same and tries in vain to discourage Jane in anyway he can. Will they find a way to make their love survive despite difficult circumstances or will they each go their separate ways and realize that love alone may not solve their problems?

I received this book compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and was immediately captivated by this enchanting story. It's understandable to feel things for both Seth's circumstance of dealing with a war injury and Jane's for trying to keep the hope and faith of love alive despite their struggles. Along the way, Jane meets Truman Rockaway, an elderly man who has served time in the Korean war and is a retired black doctor now residing at the Medical Center. He reminded me while I was reading about his character in the book of Morgan Freeman and he quiet strength provide healing to Jane's troubled soul. I really enjoyed this book and found myself drawn into the characters as each one has shared a troubled past along the way to arrive where they are today. I highly recommend this one and rate it a 5 out of 5 stars. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down.

Letters From War

The soldier wrestles to write words he knows will be his last. He searches his heart, trying to find what he wants to say. After so many letters, this one needs to count. This one needs to last. There is no one definitive sentence or theme he needs to write. Yet he wants his family to know that he will always be there, that he will always love them. Just because he is gone doesn't mean he has left them. There is so much he wants to say. Things to share. About the places he's seen, the journey he's been on, the road he's headed toward. The pride in his heart for serving his country.

He knows the world is full of bad places filled with bad men. He remembers his father telling him that. He remembers that was one of the reasons he decided to join the army. Yet even in a world like this, there is hope. Hope is not confined to Tennessee or the United States of America. Hope can be found in the darkest of spots, in the prisons of people's souls. He thinks of her face and smiles. He loves her and wants the best for her. He can only imagine how many times she's prayed for his safety, a safety that won't hold. Maybe God one day will tell her the reasons why. Maybe God will fill her with renewed hope once he's gone. He starts writing. In a world full of endless rhetoric, he tries to convey a simple and elegant truth.

I'm not writing to say good-bye. I'm writing to make a promise. So he does.

In the novel Letters From War by Mark Schultz and Travis Thrasher, we experience what its like to have not only a son in the war, but following in his father's footsteps as well. We experience a letter writing session between Beth Thompson and her only son, James who is serving in Afghanistan and then is reported missing. After two long years, friends and even family have tried to convince Beth that he will not be found and to cease the daily letters she writes faithfully to James, all the while believing in the power of her prayers, ones she believes hold more power because they come from a mother.

This is the most moving book I have had the opportunity to read and review from both the perspective of the mother who sits waiting endlessly for some final word on her son, and the son who is serving his country faithfully. Her only comfort is with her daily visits to see her grandson, whom James has never met and his wife, Britt. Her daughter, Emily can't stand to spend one more day waiting around like her mother does and has moved on with her life. Only the daily letters that Beth writes sharing the day to day events with James keeps her moving from one day to the next never knowing if she ever know what happened to James.

I received this book compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster publishers for my honest review and thought today, Veteran's Day would be the perfect time to review this book and share my thoughts. I rate this one hands down a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. For more information on this book, the authors and where to pick up a copy of this book, please click on the links below:
