The Doctor's Lady

Priscilla White has always dreamed of becoming a missionary in India. She has felt its been God's calling in her life especially since finding out when she got the mumps that it left her with the ability of not being able to have children. Rather than allow the people of her small town learn the truth, Priscilla sees this as another sign of God's telling her that she needs to head to India.

When Dr. Eli Ernest arrives at their church service complete with two Indian boys, he shares with the congregation about his ministry of teaching about God to the Nez Perce Indians in the west. He begins to share with them his purpose of opening a medical clinic up in Oregon and teaching them the ways of the white man and most importantly about the faith in God.

When Eli and Priscilla learn that neither of them can go back into the missionary field being single, they both agree to a partnership in "marriage." They both agree to keep things as friends and Eli is able to convince Priscilla to head west with him to teach a different kind of Indian about God and to also help teach them English. However, they find it harder to keep pretending when they begin to have feelings for one another than just being friends.

In the novel, A Doctor's Lady by Jody Hedlund, the reader gets the opportunity to head west from Angelica on the east coast and travel by sleigh, steamboat and eventually covered wagon to the Oregon border! Along the way they will both be tested in their not only their faith but in their ability to navigate the treacherous trails to their final destination.

I received this book compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and loved the reference of the trip across the country via the Oregon Trail. It reminds the reader of just how the west was settled and how the trip was very dangerous and often resulted in many deaths along the way. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars! Here's even more information about this book, the author and even a sneak peek at the first chapter:

ABOUT THE BOOK

Priscilla White knows she'll never be a wife or mother and feels God's call to the mission field in India. Dr. Eli Ernest is back from Oregon Country only long enough to raise awareness of missions to the natives before heading out West once more. But then Priscilla and Eli both receive news from the mission board: No longer will they send unmarried men and women into the field.

Left scrambling for options, the two realize the other might be the answer to their needs. Priscilla and Eli agree to a partnership, a marriage in name only that will allow them to follow God's leading into the mission field. But as they journey west, this decision will be tested by the hardships of the trip and by the unexpected turnings of their hearts.
