The Heart's Pursuit

Resolving in her mind that she will undoubtedly grow old as a spinster, never being the married wife and having children like her stepsister, Rose. So it should have come as no surprise to her when Bob Cassidy rode into town and quite literally swept her off her feet, that warning signs were going off in her head. Leaving her standing alone at the altar was bad enough of an embarrassment for Silver Matlock, but Bob also robbed her father's store with the last mortgage payment. Without that money, they would lose not only the Mercantile but also their family home. Even selling her grandmother's gold and diamond locket wouldn't be enough to hold off the bank collecting on the debt now looming within 90 days. But sometimes you have to take a chance when things look the darkest.

Silver would find someone to locate Bob Cassidy before he had the opportunity to sell off her family's jewelry and the cash he had stolen from the store's safe. She knew she had just enough money to find someone willing to take the time to find the man she knew could save her family if he could be found in the next 90 days. Jared Newman has been holding out his own personal revenge in finding the man who murdered his entire family leaving him not only an orphan but with his own personal need to find the man responsible. His only clue was a crescent shaped scar on the man's neck and in the last six years, Jared has been as lucky as he had hoped as a bounty hunter.

With all his money tied up in pending rewards, Silver's claim might just be the ticket in locating two men at the same time, seeing as they both seemed to be headed west. Only the last thing he imagined he'd be agreeing to when he decided to take her case, was taking her along for the ride. Her family has sent her away due to the rumors circulating in the small Colorado town of Twin Springs, especially with her taking the initiative to hire a bounty hunter to find her father's money before they were destitute and without a home seeing as they were the wealthiest family in town. Silver finds that accompanying Jared might be the only way he can find Bob with nothing more to go on than a faded picture and the description of just about every man in town. It will take more than luck for them to find him before time runs out.

I received The Heart's Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher compliments Zondervan Publishing and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. Robin Lee Hatcher has been one of my favorite Christian Western authors and every time I see her name on a request, I immediately agree to review them even before I know what they are going to be about. They are simply that good! I love her attention to detail from the wording she uses on her character's dialogue to the detailed descriptions of the towns her characters ride in to. I love strong female characters that aren't afraid to take on whatever responsibilities life tosses their way and such is the case of Silver Matlock. While she is afraid of the unknown, she is willing to take chances most women wouldn't like riding out late at night to convince a bounty hunter, she's going whether he agrees to it or not. This one easily rates a 5 out of 5 western stars in my book. Can't wait for more from Robin!!!

Themes of forgiveness, justice and mercy dominate the story and add to the characters' depth. Through The Deep Waters

Sometimes the person we have a difficult time forgiving is ourselves. Sin has a way of doing that. Ingraining itself into your soul, tormenting you every minute of the day and night, reminding you of your mistakes over and over again. Yet nothing can free us from that feeling unless we are willing to turn it over to God first. Nothing we do, can erase that guilt and sin like He can.

In Kim Vogel Sawyer's latest novel, Through the Deep Waters, Dinah Hubley has lived every girls nightmare. Making a decision at 16 to save her mother from being thrown out on the streets when she became ill working at the Yellow Parrot, a brothel in 1883 in Chicago, she does the unthinkable. When the owner of the brothel, Flo, informs her that no one stays for free in her hotel unless she can pay, she offers Dinah a one time opportunity for just the man willing to pay her to settle her debts to care for her mother. She takes Flo up on her offer and suddenly realizes her mistake, But before she can leave, the man refuses to let her go and forces Dinah to fulfill her commitment.

Knowing that she will be forever scarred by that one act, she flees to Kansas to work as a Harvey Girl as a server in their hotel. She hopes with distance, she can leave her past in Chicago. Only the night terrors and guilt will keep her in bondage even at her new job. Since she isn't quite 18, she takes a position as a chambermaid, cleaning rooms with another girl, Ruthie, who hopes that they will become close friends. But since Dinah carries so much guilt with her, she can't even see the honest friendship that Ruthie is offering her. Instead she forces herself to remain alone in a self imposed prison hoping to do her work well enough to get hired as a server.

But Dinah's beauty will only serve as an invitation to many men who fancy her good looks, and none more so than the local chicken farmer, Amos Ackerman. He's been praying to God to send him and wife, but knows that the wagon accident he had a child living him with a limb, will likely live him living alone without the possibility of a wife or family. He can only hope that someday, someone like Dinah might see something more in him than the disability that limits what he can do! Will God find a way to answer his prayers or will be forced to live a life all alone with nothing but his chickens for company?

I received Through the Deep Waters by Kim Vogel Sawyer compliments of Waterbrook Multnomah for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. This is such a beautiful story of forgiveness and redemption among the least of us that deserve it. It also highlights the awareness to childhood sexual abuse and the implications that can be carried throughout the lives of those impacted for years. Just the burden they have to carry with them can be more painful than the act itself and one they feel that they are to blame. Such a beautiful story of how happily ever afters can happen even in light of something so horrible! I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars. A reading discussion guide is included at the conclusion of this novel for book clubs.

Stuart Brannon's Final Shot

One of my favorite things I miss the most are the old time western radio programs. I know you can sometimes find them on Sirius radio now and on the Internet, but that's exactly what I was thinking as I was reading, Stuart Brannon's Final Shot by Stephen Bly.

Although only 7,000 words remained in the original manuscript by Stephen Bly just before his death, his family members got together and completed the final book in the Stuart Brannon's series. This book is definitely action packed adventure from the beginning pages as Stuart Brannon is involved in the prevention of a train robbery. After he convinces the criminal to turn himself in to the local authorities, he finds himself the center of attention by some of the passengers on a train, namely a young boy who idolizes the person he believes him to be. While correcting the young man on all the rumors he believes as truth, he faces a challenge of another kind.

Brannon receives word from a close friend Lady Harriet Fletcher who asks him to participate in a gold tournament event in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition. However Brannon just wants to return home to retire on his ranch in Arizona. When he receives another invitation from the President of the United States asking for his involvement in the disappearance of Tom Wiseman, a U.S. Marshall, he can't ignore this one. Tom is too close of a friend and has aided him in many personal and legal problems in the past, and also the many times Tom had stood with Brannon against the lawbreakers when no one else would.

I received Stuart Brannon's Final Shot compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and really liked the story-telling behind this novel. Like I described it above, to me, it read like the old time western radio programs with fast-paced action on every page, from chandelier swinging ladies to out of control horses in a small town. This one is geared to those that love that Old-Time Western Fiction much like Louis L'Amour! I rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars and commend his family members for all the time involved to put this final novel together!
