The Last Witness

There are just some books that will forever touch your heart and soul and stay with you long after you turn that final page. "The Last Witness" from best-selling author Glenn Meade is just that novel. Based on a story of a young woman he met while traveling and learning of her survival during the Bosnian war, set the tone for his latest suspense thriller than I can guarantee you won't be able to put down. I found it hard to think how in 1991 while the crisis was happening in Sarajevo, ethnic cleansing, mass rapes and concentration camps once again reared their ugly head even after we swore as a global community that we could never allow something like the Jewish Holocaust to happen again, but it did.

Carla Lane is beginning to discover through repetitive nightmares that something has been missing in her life, something she can't explain. When she tries to make sense of it, she comes up empty handed. Just beginning her own perfect dream as a soon-to-be mother, she is hoping that she can talk to her husband, Jan about it after his concert tonight. When an explosion in their car happens just outside the theater, she spends the next four days recovering in a hospital only to learn that Jan didn't survive. It appears that he has his own secrets he was keeping from Carla. Secrets Carla has been keeping buried in her mind to protect her from the atrocities that she witnessed when she was a girl living in Bosnia with her parents.

It will take the work of a therapist to help her unlock the mysteries to her nightmares along with a diary her mother left behind detailing the life she has managed to block out. One that no child would ever want to remember. One that claimed the lives of countless men, women and children as she was imprisoned in a death camp in Bosnia that is every bit as horrible as the concentration camps like Auschwitz. Now she is about to set out on a journey to discover the people responsible for the death of not only her husband but her parents and brother as well and the first place she needs to begin is with the only witness that has ever come forward claiming to have survived the horrors. Will she be able to provide the clues she will need to unlock who is responsible and will she be able to do what she has planned to pay back those responsible?

I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. In the Author Note's section, Glenn clarifies for the reader how he got the idea for the story and how it set the tone for showcasing the horrors most have missed that happened in 1990-2001 , as the crisis unfolded when Slobodan Milosevic, Serbia's leader in 1991, tries to rein in the Yugoslav regions of Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia, a bloody conflict that would split the country apart along ethnic and religious divides. While the story is hard hitting, the truth is that this did happen and to this day graves are still being uncovered. It it hard to fathom that we as a global community continue to let things like this happen instead of doing all we can to prevent it. Well researched, and beautifully written to allow the reader a front row seat to just what Carla Lane and her family had to endure and learn to live with and thus the reason for a 5 out of 5 star rating in my opinion.

The Tutor's Daughter

Who would have ever guessed that some of the best books out on the shelves today are the ones that blend the best of two or more genre's together to create a recipe for something that is guaranteed to grab you and never let go? Well that's just what you'll find when you pick up a copy of Julie Klassen's latest novel, The Tutor's Daughter. It's a perfect blend of mystery, suspense, romance and historical fiction set in Cornwall in the early 1800's. If you love any of those types of genre's, you'll want to pick up this novel as soon as you can. But be forewarned, you won't be able to put this one down and you'll be sad when it ends. Not because of a tearful ending, but because it's so good, it's over too soon.

The story begins at the Smallwood Academy, a boarding school for boys and gives us a brief history into the lives of Emma Smallwood and her father, John. As a young girl she was often the victim of the childish pranks of Henry Weston, and spent a great deal of time trying to avoid him whenever possible. It was his younger brother, Phillip that captured Emma's heart. She envisioned what a romance with him might be like, even though the possibility of that ever happening was probable. The Weston's came from a well-to-do family in Cornwall, and her family was just barely making ends meet running the Academy.

Five years later, the academy is falling on hard times and it seems that few families are sending their boys to schools such as the Smallwood Academy opting for more renown ones like Eton. As hard as Emma tried to find ways to bring more students into the academy it seemed like her father had truly given up. Acting in her father's behalf, she sent a letter to the Weston family to inquire to the possibility of the younger brothers Julian and Rowan to see if they might be interested in coming to the boarding school. Yet when a reply returned from Sir Giles Weston asking if her father would be interested in private tutoring in their family home for a year along with Emma for support, her taste for adventure was about to get interesting.

Wondering just what Phillip was like after all these years apart kept Emma's anxious to see just what the future would be like and living at the Weston estate was like a dream come true. However when Emma and her father arrive, they are more than surprise at their welcome reception and soon are made to feel just like the hired help in the Weston home. What's even more surprising is that Phillip is away at Oxford and only Henry is still living at the family home. Things are about to get interesting at the Weston estate when someone or something starts coming into Emma's room and soon she fears her life is at stake. Has Henry's childhood pranks taken on a darker side?

I received The Tutor's Daughter by Julie Klassen compliments of Bethany House and Litfuse for my honest review and have to say that a seaside Estate in Cornwall, romantic tension and an apparent ghost are just the perfect elements in this exciting novel. The signs of a great book are when it feels so real when you are reading it, you can picture the house, the stormy seas below the estate, even the school room where John and Emma teach the boys. There are such rich and vivid details to keep the reader engaged and even the tension that happened late at night is enough to keep you turning pages while attempting to figure out just what is really going on! Truly a winner in my opinion and worth every single one of the 5 out of 5 stars! For reading groups, there are some amazing questions at the conclusion of this novel!

In the latest novel from Glenn Meade, The Romanov Conspiracy, he once again takes his readers on an explosive investigation and historical fiction into the background of one of the most unsolved cases still haunting the history books today. Based on partial truth mixed with fiction to complete this novel, the answers using long-lost clues may yet reveal an intricate conspiracy, one that may well answer the twentieth century's most enduring mystery. But as to which part is truth and which part is fiction, the author leaves that up to the reader to decide.

I received The Romanov Conspiracy by Glenn Meade compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster for my own personal honest review. This being my second novel from Glenn Meade, the first being The Second Messiah, I knew I would really enjoy this one as well. Glenn is articulate in his fact findings so as to keep his readers as close to the actual events as much as possible. The writing is sound, engaging and guaranteed to keep you turning pages as fast as you can read. I once again rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars. Not knowing much about the Russian history surrounding the disappearances of the Romanov's I found this one an exceptional novel.

Chameleon

This is a MUST read book for anyone who happens across this title in their local book retailers who love a bit of Jane Austin and Sherlock Holmes blended perfectly together to keep you glued to the pages until the very end. In the second novel from the Ravensmoore Chronicles, Chameleon by Jillian Kent takes the readers on a mist-filled journey in the early 1800's in London.

Here we find ourselves introduced to the characters of Lady Victoria Grayson and her maid, Nora who are arriving by coach in the fog on their way to her brother, Lord Devlin Ravensmoore's home. After recovering from a long battle with illness, Lady Victoria is hoping for a bit of adventure as she returns to London and finds it with a bump in the road. When the carriage halts, they discover a body of Lord Stone who has been brutally attacked and left for dead on the road.

It is also where she meets Lord Witt, Joanathon Denning, who keeps her from seeing too much of the murder scene and who takes Lord Stone for medical treatment. When her brother, Lord Ravensmoore is called to attend to the injuries of Lord Stone as a practicing physician, she is left at home to wonder just what happened to this poor man.

When they search the body, Lord Witt discovers a prophetic note of warning:

"You have been found guilty of conspiring with sinful men for sinful purposes. I will now handle the situation as I see fit. Stone is only the first. Repent, you lords of parliament. ~ Lord Talon"

Now it seems that the injuries have been inflicted by some type of animal with large claws that attacked Lord Stones, face, neck and arms. Not sure if he will make it through the night, a meeting is called to warn the Lords of Parliament that a murder is on the loose. Plans must be made to possibly set a trap to catch this chameleon who walks among them and has such ready access to their whereabouts that he knows when and where each of them will be the most vulnerable and easy to reach.

I received Chameleon by Jillian Kent compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. Not having read the first book in this series, this one can be read as a stand alone. I was immediately hooked from the beginning due in part to the historical background Jillian Kent uses to establish this suspenseful mystery and being a huge fan of Jane Austin, this one really hit home for me. Jillian provides just a taste of what's really going on to tease the reader but not enough you have the book figured out before you get through the book which is a sign of a great writer for me.

I love the dark, misty feel of the 1800's in London where times were tough and the answers to questions were not always the easiest to find. The character of Lady Victoria Grayson is well-written and it was nice to follow her investigative instincts even though that was considered man's work back in those days. I am completely hooked on this series and will now be going back to find and read the first novel. I can't wait to see how this one will conclude. For me, this novel rates an amazing 5 out of 5 stars for romance with a suspenseful mystery thrown in!

Everybody's Daughter

I love it when I can find a unique take on a great historical novel and I found one hidden in the pages of Michael John Sullivan's latest novel, Everybody's Daughter. This is a unique blend of Science Fiction and Biblical Historical Romantic Suspense Fiction, so there is bound to be something for just about every book lover's genre!

In this wonderful novel, Michael Stewart and his daughter Elizabeth have the uncanny ability to be able to travel back in time through a tunnel beneath the old church he volunteers at to the days of when Jesus was still alive. He begins to live almost a double life, falling in love with a woman named Leah in Jerusalem, while struggling to raise his daughter Elizabeth in the current time frame. The interesting part of the story is how this novel opens with a last minute escape from a Roman soldier who was after both Michael and Elizabeth as they slipped back in time to the present day. While they remained safe, they left Leah behind who is now faced with dealing with Marcus, the Roman soldier who wanted to marry Elizabeth, even though she is only 14.

Michael is haunted by not knowing Leah's outcome and if she is still alive after they were able to escape. He's tried numerous times to pass back through the tunnel but it has remained closed, leaving him to wonder what has happened since he left. When Michael is asked to retrieve some items from the basement of the old church, he is immediately drawn into the tunnel once more and whisked back to Jerusalem. Only he has no control over how far back into the future he has traveled, he merely just shows up. When he arrives, it is farther back in time than when he met Leah, before her husband was viciously murdered but also back when Jesus was still alive.

Michael gets a rare moment while trying to find Leah's husband who is traveling to locate the Rabbi or teacher, the man we know as Jesus. Michael is able to hear Jesus speak to the multitudes on a hillside and afterwards has a most unusual encounter with Jesus in a cave where he learns just what his purpose is in being able to travel through time.

Now Elizabeth has realized that her father has traveled back in time without her and seeks out to find him. When she does, she finds herself in a different period of parallel time than her father and her life is now in danger. Will Michael be able to locate Elizabeth or will they be separated by the parallel periods of time in which they are able to travel back and forth in?

I received this novel, Everybody's Daughter by Michael John Sullivan compliments of B & B Media Group for my honest review and LOVED it. It's almost like a Historical version of the Time Traveler's Wife in which this one revolves around going back into the year of Christ and dealing with the people and events of that time period, meeting with Jesus, the disciples, and even witnessing the crucifixion of Jesus. Along the way however they soon find that the local pastor of the church holds the secrets of reuniting them both with a mysterious journal containing the tales of miracles within the walls of the old church itself. For me, this one rated a 5 out of 5 stars and a must read for book lovers of Biblical History and Suspense Fiction.

Everybody's Daughter is the sequel to Necessary Heartbreak which The Library Journal named one of the best books in 2010 in the Christian Fiction category. So you know I will definitely be picking this one up to see where it all began!

The 13th Tribe

When Moses went to the top of Mt. Sinai to receive the 10 commandments from God, he left the Israelites behind with Aaron. After some time the people began to complain that it was taking too long and perhaps Moses wasn't coming back after all. They convinced Aaron to make them a golden idol to worship and Aaron complied. The men, women and children began to worship the golden calf that Aaron had created and when Moses returned, the Bible states he was furious and broke the tablets in anger.

When confronted with their worship of a golden calf, Moses told them to repent and those that refused were killed. This is the basis for latest novel,The 13th Tribe by Robert Liparulo. We all know about the 12 tribes of Israelites, but in this fictional novel based on the biblical story, there is a 13th tribe of men, women and children, 40 of them, that were cursed by God to wander the earth as immortals for their sin and never see the face of God. These would be the people who not only worshiped the golden calf but tasted the blood of the sacrifice.

Now they have become a vigilante tribe that takes matters of sin and justice into their own hands as they have survived for generations. Believing at some point that what they are doing is approved by God, they will stop at nothing in the hopes that God may find favor in what they are doing. Unfortunately for them, they fail to see that they are wrong and that God is the one responsible for handing out punishment, not them. Now in the 21st century they are planning the ultimate in vengeance willing to take the lives of sinners and innocents to accomplish their purpose.

Caught in between them is Jagger Baird who is heading up security at an archaeological dig on Mt. Sinai and finds himself immediately involved with the 13th tribe who now believes that he must be eliminated as well. What they fail to understand is that Jagger is a former army ranger and when they involve his wife and son, he will stop at nothing to save them and the millions of lives that now hang in the balance.

I received The 13th Tribe by Robert Liparulo compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and have to say, I couldn't put this one down. To me, this merits an outstanding book when I will sacrifice sleep to see how it ends. I love how Robert blends biblical history along with a modern twist to a group of immortal people who believe they are God's avengers to the injustices of the world. I couldn't wait to see how this one would turn out! It's action-packed, edge of your seat, thrill ride from beginning to end and rates a 5 out of 5 stars! For those of you that love story lines like Indiana Jones, this will be a must have for you! Now I am going to be picking up other thrillers from Robert to add to my Christian library!

My Review:

I was sold from the first page and glued to this riveting fictional tale of the thunders of Biblical prophecy about to be unveiled in the latest sequel to Edge of Apocalypse. Not knowing which direction the threats would be coming from the terrorist plot for nuclear bombs within the US, to the immenient threat against Israel's demise from Iran, it seems like no place is safe anywhere on Earth. While the pages of the Bible get closer to Revelations final chapters, the story keeps the reader on the edge of their seat until end. This one rates a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and a must read for followers of Bible Prophecy, end-times fiction. Makes you wonder just how close are we to hearing the proverbial rumblings of thunder on the horizon even now.

My Review:

Just like a modern day Indiana Jones type of fiction, The Constantine Codex by Paul L. Maier, will leave readers on the edge of their seat as Dr. Jon Weber and his wife Shannon uncover what is first, five, weathered pieces of text being used as a book mark. Not seeing anything on them, they use techniques now available to see text that has faded away, been covered over or merely erased from it's original form. What they first uncover is a reference to another book of the Bible that picks up where Paul is awaiting his sentencing from Nero in Rome. Unlike the previous records of Paul's ministry as the book of Acts ends, it leaves the reader wondering just what happened to Paul. Not only that but the end of Mark's book in the Bible just seems to fade to black.

What they uncover by digging through ancient manuscripts being housed by the monks and in catholic churches in Greece and in Turkey will be the greatest biblical discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls.

You will be hooked from the first chapter as you find yourself in the Middle East searching with the Weber's looking for these lost biblical treasures amid the Muslim protests that want Dr. Jonathan Weber dead at any cost.

The Clouds Roll Away - Giveaway

I love the way she uses Raleigh's character as a strong, assertive, Christian woman who isn't afraid of dealing with her painful past and uses her faith to get her through this difficult case along some racial lines. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves Christian Crime/Suspense Fiction books with strong leading female characters.

My Review:

Why is it that whenever Mohammed Atareek seeks to view and research the Topkapi Codex, all of his requests, seem to come back denied. Is there something that the head of the Topkapi Palace Museum is afraid to let him see? The Topkapi Codex is one of the earliest Korans and claim to be "the" Koran that Caliph Uthman was reading when he died, and is now stained with his blood. Mohammed has been trying to unravel which version of the Koran had Uthman been reading - and stained with his blood. The Topkapi Codex as the Turks have claimed, or the Samarkand Codex as the Uzbekis claimed? Perhaps the whole story was nothing more than a legend fabricated by the Sunnis to smear the Shiites. Such partisan hadiths, or traditions, had been known to exist.

Angela Hall returns from a tragic trip from the Middle East after losing a dear friend in a sandstorm accident. When she gets home, she is faced with more tragic news when she learns that her mother in law is dead but has left her a great inheritance. This does not make her husband at all happy who is left with little more than nothing unless he gets therapy to deal with his personal issues. He leaves Angela with divorce papers. With nothing left to lose, Angela takes a new job to research women's issues, and take over a teaching position being vacated. There is no greater place to do that, than back in the Middle East.

I have received the Topkapi Secret by Terry Kelhawk, compliments of Glass Road Public Relations for my honest review. Aside from a rough start through the first few chapters due to establishing the characters and locations, the book is really amazing, page turning, and a thrill ride to the end. I would easily rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars!
