With You Always
Sometimes there are those novels that take the reader into a different time and place in history so well that they lose themselves in the present day and find themselves transported back in time. Jody Hedlund does such an exceptional job at that, through her research in her latest Orphan Train series and the first novel, With You Always. You can help but cheer for the underdog, hope the plans for the wicked are exposed and that true love always finds a way, and you will get all three by the closure of this novel.
The novel is set in New York City in June of 1857 and the Quincy Brothers, Thornton and Bradford have been given a challenge by their industrious and wealthy father to see who can take over the company, "In order to determine which of my sons is worthiest to inherit sole control over all my investments and companies, I am issuing a six-month challenge. The two conditions are as follows. First, each son must build a sustainable town along the Illinois Central Railroad. And second, each son must get marries to a woman he loves. Whoever succeeds in doing so by the end of six months wins the challenge and becomes owner of Quincy Enterprises."
Thornton has always been searching for the acceptance and respect he believes his twin brother Bradford has always received from his father and believes he will undoubtedly win in this challenge as well. Yet despite his uncertainty Thornton will attempt to give his brother the competition they have always promoted between them. In the end, hopefully the best man will win. While Thornton will attempt to build the town of Quincy up to his father's standards, his brother Bradford attempted to do the same with Wellington in honor of his father's forename. Now all he has to do is find a way to beat the brother who has always come out ahead of him, but he isn't quite sure how to do just that until he runs into quite literally, Elise Neumann, an impoverished German young woman who is attempting to out run some Bowery boy street gangs that have overtaken the city streets, with rioting, thieving and looting anyone they find in their path.
When Elise takes Thornton into the confines of the Seventh Street Mission, a place for women to escape prostitution and find a better way at earning a living, he believes Elise is just that type of woman despite all her appearances. But Elise has simply fallen on hard times being the only person left to care for her sisters Sophie and Marianne, as well as the caring of two orphans, Olivia and Nicholas when their own mother disappeared while looking for work. There is something behind the fiery blue eyes of Elise and her determination to do whatever it takes to provide for her siblings and orphans stirs something in the heart of Thornton. Will she be able to win Thornton's heart or will she have to leave everything behind that she loves in order to find a new start for her family aboard a train bound for Quincy with the Children's Aid society?
I received With You Always by Jody Hedlund compliments of Baker Publishing Group and Net Galley. In accordance with the new FTC Guidelines for blogging and endorsements, you should assume that every book reviewed here at Reviews From The Heart was provided to the reviewer by the publisher, media group or the author for free and were received, unless specified otherwise. This is so a beautifully historically accurate novel that conveys what the life of women were like that had to leave their families behind and find work in other towns in hopes of bringing the others along later with the money they could send home. The author's note at the conclusion of the novel brings all the historical facts together about the character's stories, even though the names are completely different from the original. This is always what inspired the series pertaining to the Orphan Train and the heartrending stories of the homeless and helpless young orphans who were taken from the streets of New York and other eastern cities and shipped west by the dozens. I can easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars and looking eagerly to the ones to follow in this series.

Hearts Made Whole
In 1865, the right of women were still something that was waiting to be resolved. Most men would agree that a woman's place was caring for the home and family and work outside of the home was a man's right. When Caroline Taylor watched in horror as her father plunged beneath the waters of Lake St. Clair during a storm, she never imagined she would have to fight for what she had always known. Her ability to care for the light at Windmill Point as her father had shown her when climbing the stairs to do so caused him so much pain. But it was truly a labor of love and Caroline knew that besides keeping mariners safe, she was also providing a home and security for her younger sisters Tessa and Sarah as well as her two twin brothers. It was all she had ever known and to think about ever leaving was not something she would consider.
Yet that is precisely what Mr. Finick had in mind when he told Caroline that she had one week to find another place to live. No amount of begging would change his mind because he had already hired a war veteran to take her place. A man, who was more suited for the job than she would ever be despite how well she had managed the lighthouse in the months following her fathers death. How would she ever be able to find a place for all of them within a week and how would she care for Sarah who has been in failing health and unable to move?
Ryan Chambers had hurt enough people in his life. The last thing he had ever planned on doing was adding to that growing list. The war had taken more out of him than he could ever have imagined when he was able to convince the doctor to spare removing his arm in order to salvage what was left when a shell removed more than half of it. Feeling less than a man, he lost more jobs than he held and was about to give up hope when the lighthouse keeper job was offered to him. At least the solitude at the lighthouse would offer him solace from all those who stared at his injury whenever he couldn't hide it in time, and had to find the words once again to explain what happened. This was the perfect place for him to find healing.
I received Hearts Made Whole by Jody Hedlund compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. This is the second novel in the Beacons of Hope Series, and not having read the first novel, I was hoping I wouldn't be missing much. I wasn't! Jody Hedlund has been creating this series, highlighting famous lighthouses in Michigan and this is just another one to add to the growing collection. I've always shared a love for the life of a lighthouse keeper and believe that lighthouse in general offer a sense of romantic mystery. The lighthouse itself could probably lend quite a few tales of the lives of those that lived and cared for them in the years that they remained in operation. While the characters are fictional, they are based on the lives of real characters that existed and love the way Jody has carefully crafted them into this novel. The chemistry between Caroline and Ryan truly works because each is looking for a way to get back what has been broken inside them. I won't share with you what happens but this is truly an exceptional store of restoration and hope in the midst of the darkest storms and well worth all 5 out of 5 stars!

A Noble Groom
At the snapping of a twig Annalisa turned with a start, and the story of "Lily and the Lion" died on her lips.
Her gaze combed the woods. The bare branches allowed her to see a fair distance in all directions. In late March the trees were gray and dull, brittle from the long winter and still devoid of leaves except for a few withered clusters that had forgotten to let go in the fall. The only sign of life within the towering maples was the sap that had begun to flow.
"More, Mama." Gretchen looked up at her, eyes wide with expectation. Even with a knit scarf covering her head and ears and a double layer of clothes, Gretchen's teeth chattered and her thin body shook. The spring sunshine didn't lend any warmth to the lingering winter temperatures.
But the story had accomplished its purpose and kept Gretchen from thinking about how cold she was and the fact that her threadbare coat wouldn't keep even the smallest mouse warm. Just the thought of carrying the heavy bucketful of sap back to the cabin made her tired.
"So, the next morning, Lily asked the way she was to go." Annalisa hung the empty pail back onto the spout and then reached for the handle of the bigger collecting bucket. "Finally she took leave of her papa and went forth with a bold heart into the woods to face the lion."
With a huff Annalisa lifted the bucket, grasping it with two hands, trying to get a firm grip. It was heavier than her load earlier in the day.
"Gretchen," said said, already short of breath. "You'll need to help Mama carry the bucket."
Gretchen didn't say anything or make an effort to move.
"Be a good girl." Annalisa hefted the bucket.
A strange voice came from behind her, speaking in Deutsch. "I don't think the father should have let Lily go off alone to face the lion, do you?"
Annalisa gasped, dropped the bucket with a thud, and spun around to face the intruder.
A man casually leaned against the nearby silver maple, a bag tossed over his shoulder.
Who was he, and how long had he been listening to her story? Annalist reached for Gretchen and tugged the little girl against her skirt.
"If Lily had been my daughter, I wouldn't have allowed her to go." The stranger lifted a fashionable derby from his head revealing dark hair that was the same rich brown as freshly plowed soil.
"No," he continued, "if I'd been Lily's father, I would have sacrificed my life and gone in her stead."
The words stopped Annalisa. A vater sacrificing his life for a mere daughter? What kind of man would do such a thing? Certainly not her vater. Sure, Vater loved her. But she was only a girl and could never be like a son to him, no matter how good she was.
As if sensing her discomfort, the stranger pushed away from the tree and straightened. "The Brothers Grimm are fine storytellers, but occasionally I find myself wishing for a slightly different version of a story or two."
In the latest novel by Jody Hedlund, A Noble Groom enchants the reader from the first page. First by procuring the reader as an ally to the plight to Annalisa Werner who has found herself a recent widow and needs help on the farm to pay off the debt before the fall otherwise she will lose it to the bank or to the conniving plots of E.B. Ward to obtain the land to build a sawmill business. Next she builds the tension so you are hoping for a solution instead of the way of her people to find a suitable husband for her despite her wishes to marry a man she loves, regardless of how he treats her like property instead of someone to love and cherish.
Next we encounter the problematic situation happening a world away as Carl von Riechart is able to escape his execution thanks in part to his father's plan to send him away to America. Even though Carl is sure that he is innocent of the crimes against him, he is forced to take a steamer to America and go into hiding of one of his manservant's brothers and help his niece out on the farm until her husband can arrange for passage to marry her. He is told not to divulge his identity or risk being discovered and sent back to face his death once again at the gallows.
I received The Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. I was in awe of the elements of this story from the time, Carl spoke his first words to Annalisa in the except above. It is a twist on a historical fairytale for me and one that is guaranteed to make any women's heart swoon at Carl's tender and noble kindness that waters the parched soul of Annalisa's broken heart. She believes that it's possible to find love, but it is only in the stories she reads to her daughter Gretchen. It isn't until she is won over by Carl's kindness that she is willing to believe that love can exist for real and hopes that her groom may never arrive to claim her after all. Her heart is captivated by Carl's charm and exceptional good looks. I've had an opportunity now to read, every single one of Jody Hedlund's book and this is another winner in my opinion. If you have ever wanted a fairytale you can believe in, this is IT! Hands down a 5 out of 5 star winner and has found a coveted place on my permanent library shelf.

Unending Devotion

For Lily Young, her search will never tire. She will continue to search every single town and saloon with no danger too great for her to bare along with Oren, an elderly photographer she travels with as his assistant take pictures of shanty workers for money. Even though she's been searching for her runaway younger sister Daisy whom she believes now works in a saloon for money, she vows she will continue to search for her, no matter how long it takes. Even if she can't save her sister, Lily finds God's calling in her life to help any of the young girls that are looking to escape the life of prostitution and working for saloon owners who will do anything it takes to ensure that their girls stay put. Most of the time it involves taking their shoes and outer clothing now that winter has set in, but Lily is on a mission and no matter how long it takes she will never give up her unending devotion to find her sister.
As Oren and Lily arrive in the town of Harrison, Michigan just as winter is setting in, she finds herself the center of attention when she enters the Northern Hotel being one of just four hotels in Harrison with temperance leanings. Only when she enters, she finds the dining room filled to capacity with more shanty men staring at her as if they had never seen a woman before. But Lily knew she was a rarity in any lumber town, only in that she wasn't up on the table dancing in her skimpies. When she asks Mrs. Heller if there are any rooms available, more than one of the men are too willing to offer her a free place to stay with them.
It isn't until a struggle ensures between Jimmy, a drunken shanty man and another one wanting to lay claim to Lily that Connell McCormick rises to put an end to this public tug of war using Lily as a rope between the two. But Lily can stand on her own two feet and since the men apparently have taken their shoes off to allow their boots to dry, she takes the liberty in measuring out her own form of discipline on their stocking feet with her own boots. She is immediately thrown into the arms of Connell and they land in a heap on the floor tangled in a line of drying socks by the fire. It seems that this is just the beginning of the many such entanglements between Lily and Connell while she remains in town. Will Lily find more than just a search for her sister in the town whose nickname is Hell's Waiting Room? Or will Lily find herself trapped in more ways than one in the town of Harrison?
I received Unending Devotion by Jody Hedlund compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. Since this is one of my preferred genre's, I couldn't wait to read this book and was immediately captivated by the characters that Jody created. I could completely understand the impatience of Lily Young who senses the more time that has gone by the greater the urgency becomes to find and save her sister before it's too late. She always wants to do the right thing, even if it means going it alone despite all the dangers. Eventually however, all those impulse responses gets Lily in more trouble than she bargained for and almost cost her, her life! I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars because it kept me interested without the lulls you find in some novels. Jody did an exceptional job at keeping the reader engaged with non stop action as the search for her sister continues through the novel and the romantic tension develops between her and Connell. For those that love a bit of spicy western romance, then this is the one for you!

The Doctor's Lady
Priscilla White has always dreamed of becoming a missionary in India. She has felt its been God's calling in her life especially since finding out when she got the mumps that it left her with the ability of not being able to have children. Rather than allow the people of her small town learn the truth, Priscilla sees this as another sign of God's telling her that she needs to head to India.
When Dr. Eli Ernest arrives at their church service complete with two Indian boys, he shares with the congregation about his ministry of teaching about God to the Nez Perce Indians in the west. He begins to share with them his purpose of opening a medical clinic up in Oregon and teaching them the ways of the white man and most importantly about the faith in God.
When Eli and Priscilla learn that neither of them can go back into the missionary field being single, they both agree to a partnership in "marriage." They both agree to keep things as friends and Eli is able to convince Priscilla to head west with him to teach a different kind of Indian about God and to also help teach them English. However, they find it harder to keep pretending when they begin to have feelings for one another than just being friends.
In the novel, A Doctor's Lady by Jody Hedlund, the reader gets the opportunity to head west from Angelica on the east coast and travel by sleigh, steamboat and eventually covered wagon to the Oregon border! Along the way they will both be tested in their not only their faith but in their ability to navigate the treacherous trails to their final destination.
I received this book compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and loved the reference of the trip across the country via the Oregon Trail. It reminds the reader of just how the west was settled and how the trip was very dangerous and often resulted in many deaths along the way. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars! Here's even more information about this book, the author and even a sneak peek at the first chapter:
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Jody has written novels for the last 18 years (with a hiatus when her children were young). After many years of writing and honing her skills, she finally garnered national attention with her double final in the Genesis Contest, a fiction-writing contest for unpublished writers through ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers).
Her first published book, The Preacher’s Bride (2010 Bethany House Publishers), hit the CBA Best Seller list on two different occasions and has won multiple awards.
Her second book, The Doctor’s Lady, released this September. She has completed a third book which will be released in 2012. She’s currently busy researching and writing another book!
ABOUT THE BOOK
Priscilla White knows she'll never be a wife or mother and feels God's call to the mission field in India. Dr. Eli Ernest is back from Oregon Country only long enough to raise awareness of missions to the natives before heading out West once more. But then Priscilla and Eli both receive news from the mission board: No longer will they send unmarried men and women into the field.
Left scrambling for options, the two realize the other might be the answer to their needs. Priscilla and Eli agree to a partnership, a marriage in name only that will allow them to follow God's leading into the mission field. But as they journey west, this decision will be tested by the hardships of the trip and by the unexpected turnings of their hearts.

The Preacher's Bride
Elizabeth Whitbread had her life planned out ahead of her. Being as plain as she was in comparison to her beautiful and much younger sisters, she was happy to have any man interested in her much less engaged to her. Even though he wasn't much to look at, perhaps in time she could grow to love him. Not many other men would even glance her way.
John Costin tragedy would alter his life in more ways than one when his wife dies delivering their youngest son. Yet with no one to wet nurse him, Thomas' fate wasn't much better than his mother's. When Elizabeth Whitbread locates Lucy, a poor but willing mother to offer extra milk to feed Thomas, it seems like an ideal plan. Little does Elizabeth understand that not all women make suitable wet nurses for families of higher standing in the community. It seems like Ms. Grew has the final say in most matters when it comes to the women of Bedfordshire, yet Elizabeth isn't about to let her have the final say.
When Vicar Burton suggest that Elizabeth offer housekeeping service to John Costin for the summer until suitable arrangements can be made, Elizabeth feels it's God's calling on her life to step up and do the right thing, even though her fiancee' Samuel Muddle isn't at all happy about her spending time with another man and his children.
It isn't until a stranger shows up at the Costin home when John is away, that their lives all about to change. When he threatens to spread rumors of Elizabeth being more than a housekeeper for John unless she provides him with information as to what John Costin has been preaching about, she will ultimately pay in more ways than one.
I received the book, The Preacher's Bride by Jody Hedlund, compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. This one rates a pure 5 out of 5 stars. Not only are the characters believable, once again we have a strong female role model who isn't afraid to stand her ground even against all the odds. I loved this book and highly recommend it.
