Severed Trust

It's the latest "in" thing. But first you have to be approved by those that are already part of this exclusive group. Funny how it has to happen that way but in order to ensure security within the group it has to be this way. Oh and you do have to bring along a little something to contribute to the party as well. Welcome to a pill party. Now that you have been approved based on who you're dating, you are expected to bring along whatever happens to be in your medicine cabinet. Don't take too many pills from those bottles as we don't want others to notice they are missing, but maybe one or two for now. They can be anything, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, blood pressure medicine or even pain pills. Just make sure no one sees you taking them and we'll see you there. Make sure you don't tell anyone either or else!

Such is the premise behind Severed Trust by best selling author Margaret Daley in the fourth book in her Men of the Texas Rangers Series. We are immediately introduced to Kelly Winston who finally has her shot with the popular kids in Summerton High School. Now dating a football player, Jared Montgomery who literally has everything going for him including the fact that his dad Bradley is one of the town's richest men and who also owns the largest ranch in Texas. Now Kelly just has to make it through this party with Jared who ensure her that he won't let anything happen to her. He loves her after all and this is a way for Kelly to get to know his closest friends. Armed with a handful of prescription pills that removed from their parents medicine chests, they arrive at the party to contribute their pills to a large bowl in the middle of the abandoned warehouse. The goal of the party is to take a handful of the assorted pills and drink them down with a beer and see what happens.

Jared tells her nothing bad has ever happened. Most of the time, kid's don't experience anything at all; some get a temporary high or others simply sleep off the effects. However Kelly questions just how right any of this is, but wanting to be a permanent part of Jared's future, she decides to take a risk. Only tonight things will take a dramatically different course. When Kelly wakes up she finds Jared cold and laying on the ground of the warehouse. She hears someone mention he is dead and that they have to get him out of the warehouse. Kelly knows she has to get out of here before anyone finds out, so she calls her best friend Lexie to come give her a ride. She makes Lexie promise not to say anything about picking her up, but when she arrives home, the police are waiting for her.

It doesn't help that Lexie's uncle is Ethan Stone, a Texas Ranger and her dad, Cord, is the chief of police. Just how can she find her way through being loyal to her best friend and doing the right thing, especially when Jared's body has been found in the lake. Now it leads Lexie to wonder just what Kelly and Jared were up to and Kelly doesn't want to talk to her about anything that happened that night. In fact, Kelly goes as far as telling the police that she came home after her date with Jared and she doesn't know what happened after he dropped her off. But soon clues begin to point Ethan and Cord to the fact that Jared was murdered and his father will pull out all the stops to ensure that the murderer is caught.

I received Severed Trust by Margaret Daley compliments of Abingdon Press for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable one and the opinions expressed in this review are strictly my own. This really opens the readers eyes to what may in fact be happening in schools all over the country. With illegal drugs becoming harder to come by, "pill parties" are becoming the latest thing for middle school and high school students to be involved in. We already know how easy it is for some kids to become addicted to prescription drugs but this is a chilling look at the dangers that may be happening right under our own noses. Once again Margaret Daley takes this novel into a sensational suspense thriller and completely leaves you guessing at what is happening until it all falls into place at the very climatic ending. Makes you wonder how far you'd go to cover for your friend when you give them your word? I'd rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and think it definitely gives parents another conversation starter to have in their own family to prevent this kind of thing from happening to those we love and care about.

Scorned Justice

What is it like to want revenge so much you go too far? What does it do to you? To the people around you? God wants us to forgive someone who has hurt us or done something wrong to us. Revenge comes out of the ability not to forgive a person for a wrong done. That is the premise behind the latest novel, Scorned Justice by Margaret Daley, the third book in her Men of the Texas Rangers Series.

When District Court Judge Rebecca Morgan receives a floral delivery, she isn't prepared for what she receives, a dozen long-stem roses - all dead. This is the first of many messages she gets pertaining to her recent case before her dealing with the murder of a business man by a high-level member of the Russian mob. The first trial had been declared a mistrial when it was revealed their was jury tampering. She's not about to let this tactic change her opinion about overseeing the case.

However when her brother Thomas is attacked, she wonders if this is about her recent appointment on the case or simply an accident on the ranch. Since her brother has lapsed into a coma due to his injuries, Texas Ranger, Brody Calhoun has taken on the assignment of protecting her and investigating the case for possible answers. The one problem he has with Rebecca is that he still carries feeling for her from childhood that left him with a broken heart when she married someone else. However now that Rebecca is recently widowed, she isn't exactly sure she wants to risk her heart to another cop. She finds it hard not to fall for Brody especially when he is assigned as her personal bodyguard until the trial is over.

However when Rebecca takes over running the ranch til her brother recovers, she is about to wonder just how far the Russian mob will go to make sure that this case doesn't go to trial. First cattle are stolen off the property, then she and her nieces are almost run down in town and then a fire that threatens to burn down the family home and ranch lands. Is this simply a series of accidents, or is something else going on that no one had considered. All Rebecca knows for sure is she can't let a guilty man go free while she can do something about it, even if it means putting her entire family at risk.

I received Scorned Justice by Margaret Daley compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and Abingdon Press for my honest review. I have not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review. I did LOVE this one!!! It was so good from the very first page, that I took my time reading this one. Margaret did an exceptional job blending just the right amount of romantic tension between Rebecca and Brody with the adrenaline infused suspense. More than half way through the book, I still couldn't quite figure out what was going on, and wondered just what was waiting for either of them around the next corner. You can understand the unwillingness to get involved with Brody after losing her husband, Garrett in the line of duty. This is the third book in the Men of the Texas Rangers series, and so far it's my favorite. I love the idea of using revenge to motivate a character to stop at nothing until he has accomplished his purpose, which makes for an exceptional villain. In my opinion I would rate this one a perfect 5 out of 5 Texas Stars!!! Now I am in limbo land waiting for the next book, Severed Trust coming this fall. If you're a fan of romance and suspense, you'll want to pick this one up today.

Shattered Silence

Texas Ranger, Cody Jackson, headed to the town of Durango, Texas for a few reasons. One was to help solve a case involving a fellow Ranger, Al Garcia who was shot while on duty and was now recovering and retiring at the same time. The second reason was to removes his teenage son, Kyle from his stepfather's white supremacist habits and thinking. Since Kyle had recently lost his mother three months ago, he clung to the beliefs that all other races of people were wrong to associate with and began bullying kids in his old high school. Kyle wasn't any bit happy about his dad, Cody taking him far from Houston almost before the school year was out and trying to be a dad now after divorcing his mother three years ago.

But his new job in Durango is about to get interesting as a rise in murders begins to climb to three in four short days, launching Cody into a new working relationship with Durango police officer, Liliana Rodriguez. She has just the right influence to draw the local Hispanic community into talking with her and Cody about the recent crime spree in their usually quiet town. Now on the heels of what could be a serial killer, someone begins burning down all the crime scenes in an effort to hide evidence. Is there a connection between all the murders and recent arson fires in Durango, or is it possibly a Mexican drug cartel who is trying to make sure that Cody and Liliana don't connect all the dots between drug and arms smuggling into Texas?

I received Shattered Silence by Margaret Daley compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and Abingdon Press for my honest review. This is the second book in The Men of the Texas Rangers series and I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars. This is the story of dealing with issues from the characters pasts in this case especially with Cody and Kyle. Both father and son have to deal with healing their divided relationship that time has worn on to find true forgiveness and second chances for a new life. For Liliana Rodriguez the patterns of her past become something she has to face with an abusive father growing up and now her sister is living with an abusive husband. However this time, Liliana is in a position to do something about it. The ending offers a conclusion you didn't see coming and well worth picking up this series of books.
