The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship

Kate, Jo, and Sarah, would have never believed their friendship would face the ultimate in tests. They also have one thing in common...Rachel.

Rachel was their fourth member of their quartet friendship, whose life, although well lived, was too short. When she dies, she sends each of them a letter asking them to face their greatest fears. Only Rachel and the letter's recipients know the reason for choosing each unusual task that each of them has to endure through the novel, The Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship by Lisa Verge Higgins.

No friendship ever has to face the many challenges that Kate, Jo, and Sarah must endure, but in doing so, Rachel teaches them that the very things they fear, once conquered, will change them forever. For one, she has lost the spark in her marriage as her role of a mom consumes the person she once was; for another, she questions whether or not, she could ever be a mom after her difficult childhood, when she is asked to be the mom of Rachel's only surviving daughter; and for the last one, sometimes the love that we let go, will leave us struggling with doubts of a past we could have, and keep us from any happiness that comes our way.

I love the intimacy of the words that Lisa Higgins uses to tell the struggles each of these women face. I feel like she is talking to us through their lives as a best friend would. I was captivated by the feelings and emotions she pulls from the reader and in witnessing their challenges, it changes us as well.

I received the book compliments of Hachette Book Group for my honest review and for this being the first review of the New Year, I needed this one. It begins with a thrill ride from page one when Kate, your average, over booked, soccer mom to three boys and husband finds herself questioning her sanity as she is about to jump out of a plane. I loved it and couldn't put it down until I finished. This one is a stellar read for any women who lives with her own fears that prevent her from moving forward, and rates a 5 out of 5 stars.

Top 10 Books for 2010

Wow looking back at some of the books I've been blessed with the opportunity to read and review for the publishers this year is so unbelievable. I started off with a goal of at least 100 books to read this year. I think I saw it on another blog somewhere and thought, in today's technology era, where we are passing up social interactions for virtual ones, I'd go back to basics and pick up my love of reading. Here's my reality...I read a total of 242 books last year!!!

Being a strong Christian woman, I challenged myself to step outside my genre of choice and read anything a publisher asked me to read. I have to admit in choosing my top 10 was harder than I imagined, but I chose the ones that, for me, this year, were life changing, or completely touched my heart and brought me to tears. These are also books I will read more than once, which is why they rank as my personal top 10 picks. I have provided the links on each if you wish to see the review on them once again, or you became a faithful follower after I had reviewed the books. In no certain order here are my selections for 2010:

A Season Of Miracles by Rusty Whitener - for those who love baseball and the story of hope a child brings when he joins the team is guaranteed to make you cry.

A Time To Embrace by Karen Kingsbury
- what faith in God does to unite a family on the verge of divorce and an unforeseen tragedy offers in a lesson of forgiveness. Don't miss this one.

Snow Day by Billy Coffey
- What happens in the life of one man will show us that we all touch one anothers lives in a variety of ways. A soon-to-be Christmas classic.

Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe by Irene Brand and Anita Higman - Two Christmas stories are combined in this book to show the magic of hope and faith in the lives of the people they touch during a unforgettable Christmas.

The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven by Alex and Kevin Malarkey - a true story of a miracle that happened when a family was involved in a car accident and just what happened after that.

Resurrection In May by Lisa Samson - A strange and wonderous friendship ignites the fire of love in May Seymour's life. May Seymour graduated from college with the world at her feet and no idea what to do with it. She's about to find her purpose in a most unusual way.

David and Goliath, The Guardian Angel Chronicles by Bryan Hathaway - David Liberty is a broken, lonely, and embittered old man. With his mind still intact but trapped in a failing body, doomed to spend his last days in a nursing home, David welcomes his impending death—his escape from life. All that changes when he is visited by an angel, Joelle, who confronts his past failings and offers David a second chance at life.

Hurricanes In Paradise by Denise Hildreth
- When Riley Sinclair stepped into her new job as director of guest relations at a posh resort on Paradise Island, she felt the final pieces of her once-broken life coming together. But the waters become choppy when Riley discovers that some who come to the Atlantis Hotel are accompanied by paralyzing secrets and overwhelming fears. Riley and three guests are in desperate but unknowing need of each other, eventually forging unlikely yet powerful friendships. With a hurricane headed straight for the island, together they embark on a journey of laughter, heartache, and healing.

Blind Hope by Kim Meeder and Laurie Sacher - An unwanted dog. An emotional rescue. Two lives forever changed. A true story that will change your life forever in how you see animals in your life.

The Noticer by Andy Andrews - Orange Beach, Alabama is a simple town filled with simple people. But like all humans on the planet, the good folks of Orange Beach have their share of problems - marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy, as well as the many other obstacles that life seems to dish out to the masses. Fortunately, when things look the darkest - a mysterious man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up. An elderly man with white hair, of indiscriminate age and race, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and leather flip flops carrying a battered old suitcase, Jones is a unique soul. Communicating what he calls "a little perspective," Jones explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things that others miss.

There are certainly so many others that are now permanent members in my own library that I will keep and read over and over again but for now, these, my dearest followers, are my personal picks of 2010. I hope you pick one or all of them up and let them take you away, inspire you and touch your heart. May you all have a blessed and very Happy New Year in 2011!

Please share what you found enjoyable about coming here in 2010 with me as a way to close out 2010!

Just Let Me Lie Down - Giveaway and Review

When a woman decides to start a job after becoming a mom or the other way around, there are countless statements that only women can truly relate to.

We've all heard the saying, "I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan..." yet so many of us find that simple statement overwhelms us to the point that sometimes that pan is too heavy for us to pick up some days or on others we'd like to wield that pan as a deadly object to answer one last request of us. Can you relate?

In the book, Just Let Me Lie Down by Kristin Van Ogtrop, she defines these "momisms" in alphabetically order of what its like in the day to day lives of working moms. Here are just a few of the classics I enjoyed:

Caller ID Malfunction: When you have dialed a number and cannot remember whom it belongs to, but the phone is ringing and it feels too late to hang up, in case someone has gotten up out of the chair on the other end to answer your call. Are you calling the pediatrician? Your boss? The plumber? It's anybody's guess.

Just A Second: That eternity between when a child says he'll do something you've asked and when he actually gets around to it.

Technological bipolarism: When you wake up on the morning and can't imagine how you would get through life without your Blackberry, but by bedtime you want to strap a bomb to it and blow it to smithereens.

Young and restless: Your children at the dinner table. Based on my experience as a mother of three boys, eating dinner as a family is so stressful (see Unhappy Hour, page 216) that it feels like it should be a part of the workday. And yet we persist.

As you can tell this book is such a welcome sigh of laughter and smiles for any mother that wonders if Calgon can truly take her away from it all. Trust me, this one is not to be missed. I received this book, compliments of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review and am so glad I read this one. It helped me realize that I am not the only one thinking these things or living them for that matter. I have an ally in Kristin and she is truly a 5 star rating. She is also the editor of Real Simple magazine, also a favorite of mine! The book is available in hardcover and eBook formats.

The Clouds Roll Away - Giveaway

There are some that live in the South that like things just the way that they have always been. The old historic plantation houses and land, completely restored and the people living there, need to share in that same level of keeping appearances.

Yet when RPM, an up and coming rapper, takes over the Laurel plantation, he soon is provided with plenty of messages to let him know he is not welcome.

FBI agent Raleigh Harmon's just returned from Seattle after being sent their on disciplinary action, when she is given the case involving a cross burning at Rapland, the property of rapper mogul RPM. Taking a soil sample and having it analyzed, reveals that this isn't a standard racial threat. Someone is using high grade World War 1 chemicals of mustard gas and lewisite. Whoever used these chemicals wanted to make sure that cross burned.

As Raleigh begins her investigation her mother has plans for her personal life, reuniting her with her former boyfriend Demott Fielding, one of the most wealthiest families in Virginia. He immediately takes an interest in her while avoiding his sister Mac's upcoming wedding.

As all the evidence comes together, soon Raleigh begins to discover that some in the town are willing to risk everything to keep things the way they always have been, even if it means murder.

I received The Clouds Roll Away by Sibella Giorello, compliments of Litfuse Publicity for my honest review and inhaled every page. I love the way she uses Raleigh's character as a strong, assertive, Christian woman who isn't afraid of dealing with her painful past and uses her faith to get her through this difficult case along some racial lines. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars, and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves Christian Crime/Suspense Fiction books with strong leading female characters.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room

How many Christmas mornings have you found your family gathered around the tree with presents beautifully wrapped and a scrumptious feast on the table - but with hearts that have not been prepared to truly take in the wonder of God's becoming human? Not this year.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room, a family Advent devotional from Bible teacher and mom, Nancy Guthrie, is designed to bring your family together during a season that is often too much about programs and presents and simply not enough about Jesus. Along with devotions for every day in December, this resource includes explanations of some hard-to-understand elements of popular Christmas carols and discussion questions that will draw your elementary through high school age kids into the conversation, transforming this time together from a dry lecture into a treasured family experience.

I received this wonderful hardcover book compliments of Tyndale House Publishers for my honest review and we've been enjoying it together as a family since the first day of December. We love looking at the Christmas story in the many parts and reflecting on many aspects we may miss otherwise. How such a young girl must have felt being approached by an angel of God with wonderful news that she would be the mother of Jesus. How Joseph must have felt to raise the Son of God and watch Him grow up. How both of them were hand chosen by God to endure all they would in raising Him and watching Him die for our salvation.

We get a first hand glimpse at the stories behind some of the blessed Christmas carols we've all come to love and enjoy. What a better way to place the focus where it should be this year and every year, than celebrating the true Reason for The Season! This book rates a 5 out of 5 stars and I hope you all get a copy for your family and begin a new tradition.

A Time To Embrace

Life-changing, miraculous, unbelievable! Not sure if I am using the words to describe my own personal discovery and change or describing the characters that Karen Kingsbury uses in her novel, A Time To Embrace.

John Reynolds stems from a family of football coaches. It's in his blood and each succession of his family grows, he sees wisdom in his father's words that you coach as long as the game remains unchanged. Yet in John's life it will change in many, unexpected ways.

Abby has been his faithful wife for almost 22 years, and just shy of a few weeks ago, her and John were prepared to tell their kids that their marriage was over. Yet when their oldest daughter Nicole announces her engagement, they decide to wait until they get married. Not much will change between them, while they wait.

Like most parents, Chuck Parker dreams of a professional football career for his son Casey. Now that Casey is a senior at Marion High, his only obstacle is the amount of play time the coach is giving his son. Since nothing seems to sway Coach Reynolds, Chuck begins to plan for taking the coach out, weaving lies of deceit to other parents that think maybe Coach Reynolds needs to be replaced. Perhaps his Christian methods of choosing players isn't so godly after all.

When an anonymous letter shows up on the Coach's car, threatening the coach of allowing his football players to drink and participate in street racing, John Reynolds realizes his days of coaching are numbered.

When Nathan Pike, a once well mannered high school student turns Goth and the football players begin to bully him, Coach Reynolds finds a drawing that concerns him. A skull and crossbones with the words, Death to Jocks! on it, he begins to wonder just how serious this threat is.

Yet when a life changing accident happens, it will change the lives of every single person living in the town forever, and nothing will be the same as it was for any of them.

In the novel A Time to Embrace by Karen Kingsbury, we get to witness first hand the very power of God in every single situation presented in her wonderful book. This is the second novel in the Timeless Love Series and through the presentation of a fictional story, Karen Kingsbury weaves a message of hope, commitment, and faith in God that will forever change the way you view God and His message of forgiveness and redemption.

I received this life changing book compliments of Thomas Nelson Publishers and would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who needs a shot of honest faith and restoration in God, or in saving a troubled relationship. THIS WILL DO IT! Trust me! It worked personally for me! So it comes as no surprise that I would rate this book a life changing 5 out of 5 stars!

City of Tranquil Light

How far would you be willing to go if you felt the call of God on your life?

Would you be willing to risk your life to spread the gospel of Jesus?

Will Kiehn is just that ordinary man seemingly destined for life as a humble farmer in the Midwest, when Edward Geisler comes to his church one day to share his testimony of being a missionary in China. After returning home and finding out that Edward is coming to dinner, Will isn't sure if the strange feeling inside is God's calling or guilt.

When plowing his fields one day, he kneels to pray like he does every morning, and immediately feels the peace of God come upon him and give him confirmation that he is calling him to leave home and go to China with Edward.

Upon heading out with Edward on a ship bound for China, Will meets Katherine Friesen, a Deaconess from a hospital in Cleveland, who has also made the commitment to go to China. During the rough voyage that test more than their personal stamina, across open waters, poor living conditions, Will and Katherine become united in more than their ministry, they become married.

As they work to improve the lives of the people of Kuang P'ing Ch'eng- City of Tranquil Light, a place they come to love despite the crumbling of more than a two-thousand year dynasty that plunges the country into years of civil war in the early 1900's.

They face hardships they could have never imagined: a personal loss that shakes them both to the core, the constant threat of bandits, the physical dangers and tragedies of warlord China. They are tested both spiritually and physically, and they are also rewarded in ways that will leave them forever changed. This story is one of marriage, of leaving one home and finding another, and of faith.

I received this book City of Tranquil Light by Bo Caldwell compliments of B & B Media Group for my honest review. I was deeply touched as I read the story from both her grandparents perspectives of the lives that they both lived during China in the 1900's when the country was in utter turmoil. This is their memoir and shows just how our much our faith can grown in the midst of turmoil and adversity. This one rates a 5 out of 5 stars.

I Dare You To Change - Giveaway and Review

A forty-year-old woman who gets hit by a bus, is rushed to the hospital, and dies on the operating table. She meets God and He tells her, "Don't worry, you're not going to die right now. I still have a purpose for you, and I'm giving you forty more years."

Next thing you know, she wakes up in the recovery room, thrilled to be alive. Later she thinks, "If I have forty more year, I want to make sure I look GREAT."

So after she's headed from the bus accident, she immediately talks to a plastic surgeon and signs up for all kinds of work - a nip here, a tuck there. Soon, she's reworked from head to toe. After surgery, she continues her makeover with a dark tan, a new hairstyle, and a whole new wardrobe.

Her makeover complete, she's walking across the street and -bam!-she gets hit by a bus again, but this time she really dies. Now she's standing before God, angry, and she says, "God, what happened? You told me I had forty more years!" And God looks at her and say, "I'm sorry...I didn't recognize you."

It's so easy for us to think we're changing our lives when we change things on the outside. We believe we can get results without putting forth effort, and without the basic ingredients of perseverance, fortitude, and courage. We think that a new job, a new city, a new haircut will make everything better. But the real change is an inside job. It starts with our attitude, our efforts, and our energy. It takes intention and action on a daily basis.

Do you feel like you're in the same rut, believing that you are just the way you are. You can't change. You're always going to be like this? Do you really want to change?

Then I Dare You To Change by Bil Cornelius is just the motivation book you will need to being to make daily steps to work towards discovering the difference between dreaming of a better life and actually living it. Some of the areas Bil deals with in the book are:

  • Breaking Your Cycles of Failure
  • Discovering Your Calling and Go Big!
  • Adopt a New Attitude!
  • Develop a Plan and a Team!
  • Act Decisively!
  • Sustain Success!

I received this book compliments of Sanctified Together for my honest review and what a perfect gift for anyone looking to finally make a change in their life just before the new year begins. Pause For Power

Join Dr. Warren Wiersbe for a Personal Bible Study with a revised version of Pause for Power: A 365 Day Journey in the Scriptures. This daily devotional will allow you to explore fifteen different books of the Bible with wisdom and insight gleaned from Wiersbe's best selling commentaries.

This devotional offers insight and encouragement, this devotional touches on real-life themes that include contentment, integrity, patience, joy, hope, ministry, love and peace. Each day's devotional includes a brief Bible passage, an excerpt about that particular passage from Dr. Wiersbe's commentaries, and questions for personal reflection. A brief prayer ends each day's Scripture Meditation and purposefully commits the reader's heart and mind to God's direction.

Here is an example:

Day 2 - Devoted to Devotions

Read Colossians 4:2 - "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."

It has well been said that the purpose of prayer is not to get our will done in heaven, but to get God's will done on earth. Prayer is not telling God what to do or what to give. Prayer is asking God for that which He wants to do and give, according to His will (1 John 5:14-15). As we read the Word and fellowship with our Father, we discover His will and then boldly ask Him to do what He has planned. Richard Trench (1807-1886), archbishop of Dublin, said it perfectly: "Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance, it is laying hold of His willingness."

Of course, it is possible to pray in our hearts and never use the gift of speech (1 Sam. 1:13), but we are using words even if we don't say them audibly. True prayer must first come from the heart, whether the words are spoken or not.

SOMETHING TO PONDER

As you pray, in what ways are you "watchful"? In what ways are you "thankful"?

The devotional is perfect to pick up at any date since it's labeled by Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, etc instead of specific dates for those that want to start today! The book is a hardcover, 5 by 7, and comes with a ribbon to keep track of your place. Its short enough that you can use these each and every morning to get a great start to your day.

I received this book compliments of B & B Media Group and David C Cook, for my honest review and love this devotional for my husband, since its small and compact. I would easily rate this one a perfect 5 out of 5 stars for our fast paced world where we still need God's divine inspiration to get us started on the right path for our days.

The Topkapi Secret

Ever been drawn into a story that takes you on an international adventure while depositing nuggets of wisdom and glimpses of the world along the way? Terry Kelhawk's, The Topkapi Secret, romantic story of an American professor and a Middle Eastern researcher on the run from religious zealots does just that.

When professor Angela Hall's Californian life crumbles, she packs a suitcase and heads to Turkey with a mission of completing her long-delayed research of women's issues in the region. But when her path crosses the passionate, fervent Mohammed Atareek, sparks fly...in all directions.

Mohammed is a researcher as well - of the Koran and changes made to it. He desperately seeks interaction with the Topkapi Codex, an ancient manuscript of the Koran on display at Topkapi Palace Museum in Instanbul, but the Codex is off-limits. As other Koranic scholars echo the cry of truth regarding the changes to the Koran, the body count rises.

My Review:

Why is it that whenever Mohammed Atareek seeks to view and research the Topkapi Codex, all of his requests, seem to come back denied. Is there something that the head of the Topkapi Palace Museum is afraid to let him see? The Topkapi Codex is one of the earliest Korans and claim to be "the" Koran that Caliph Uthman was reading when he died, and is now stained with his blood. Mohammed has been trying to unravel which version of the Koran had Uthman been reading - and stained with his blood. The Topkapi Codex as the Turks have claimed, or the Samarkand Codex as the Uzbekis claimed? Perhaps the whole story was nothing more than a legend fabricated by the Sunnis to smear the Shiites. Such partisan hadiths, or traditions, had been known to exist.

If Mohammed's research leads him to the truth he believes that the Koran hides an extraordinary secret - a truth that would turn the Muslim world upside down.

Angela Hall returns from a tragic trip from the Middle East after losing a dear friend in a sandstorm accident. When she gets home, she is faced with more tragic news when she learns that her mother in law is dead but has left her a great inheritance. This does not make her husband at all happy who is left with little more than nothing unless he gets therapy to deal with his personal issues. He leaves Angela with divorce papers. With nothing left to lose, Angela takes a new job to research women's issues, and take over a teaching position being vacated. There is no greater place to do that, than back in the Middle East.

I have received the Topkapi Secret by Terry Kelhawk, compliments of Glass Road Public Relations for my honest review. Aside from a rough start through the first few chapters due to establishing the characters and locations, the book is really amazing, page turning, and a thrill ride to the end. I would easily rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

Stay With Me - Giveaway and Review

"If I ever forget who I am,
bring me here and I'll remember"

Such a haunting premonition of things to come for the abandoned children who were found aboard an old boat, For Tuna when they were only 5 and younger.

Now David, Taina, Holly Adrian and Ray each have grown but managed to stay in contact with one another. Long ago, one night they were discovered with no parents beneath the hatch of an old boat. Dressed in fine clothes and unable to speak much, they were all put into foster care. The only strange thing uniting them was a hand drawn starfish on each of their left hands. Each of them still carries that reminder with them, all permanently tattoed on their hand in various shapes and sizes.

When David learns that he has a fatal brain cancer, he brings all his brothers and sisters together on Griswold Island, off the Connecticut coast. This is the home of his former ex-girlfriend, Julia, but also one whom David wants to marry. Each of them believe they are here to help David get his mind off of dying and spend some quality time with him.

Yet David has other ideas, beginning with the flashbacks he had when they discovered his brain tumor. Are the flashbacks merely part of his cancer attacking his brain or are they secrets of who they really are and how they arrived in Puerto Rico?

In the book, Stay With Me, by Sandra Rodriguez Barron, we are taken into the lives of each of the five children who are dealing with their own personal struggles of what happened to them. Each of them is attempting to push the past back and move forward with the present, but are unable to.

I received the book compliments of TLC Book Tours for my honest review, and have to say, this story really captivated my heart and took me for a ride. I love the struggle with David most of all, because of his cancer, he has nothing left to fear in uncovering the truth that brought them all together and discovering what happened to them those many years ago. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars!

Thr3e - Giveaway and Review

Ted Dekker is one of my favorite Christian writers. I have always loved the horror/ mystery genre, but it was always a struggle to find a Christian author that wrote for this genre. I was blessed to learn about Ted Dekker last year and began reading novel after novel by him, and each time I was intrigued at how the story ended, and he always left me wanting more! THR3E by Ted Dekker was no exception by any means. This is honestly a book you not only have to read, but experience for yourself.

The book opens with our main character, Kevin Parsons, who is enrolled in seminary school trying to become a pastor. Kevin has a very philosophic mind and has a real interest in human nature, sin, and the human capability for good and evil. One day on his way home from a deep discussion with his professor at seminary school, Kevin receives an eerie call on his cell phone from a man who calls himself "Slater". He claims to have some connection with Kevin and instructs him to solve this riddle in three minutes or else the car that he is currently driving will explode: "What falls but never breaks? What breaks but never falls?" Before ending the call, Slater tells Kevin that if Kevin confesses his "sin" the game ends and Kevin is free. There is only one problem; Kevin has no idea what it is that he is supposed to confess!

This riddle is just the beginning of a horrific chain of events involving the FBI, local police, and the love of his life Samantha who may or may not be in the same situation Kevin has found himself in. As far as Kevin is concerned, no one is safe. Over the course of only a few short days, Kevin tries to escape the clutches of this man called "Slater" and is forced to dig up a past that was meant to stay buried or else the game will never stop. "What falls but never breaks? What breaks but never falls"?

I received this book compliments of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review and once a fan of Ted Dekker, you become a lifelong fan! This one rocks with a 5 out of 5 stars! If you've never read any of Ted Dekker's books, trust me, read one and you'll be hooked and wanting more!

What? Another Great Giveaway?

Isn't it amazing when you can make someone's Christmas just that more special by offering them something amazing?

Well I for one am and here's the latest from My Blog Spark and Pillsbury! Who doesn't love Pillsbury's Toaster Strudel? I know I loved it when it first came out as a great alternative over other brands. I used to be a chronic breakfast skipper just based on the time factor alone, and I didn't like to take something cold to eat along with me to work.

That's when Pillsbury Toaster Strudel came into play! It's fast, simple and tastes amazing, in my opinion, not just for breakfast either. Just pop them into the toaster and when they pop up, just add the perfect amount of frosting to your liking, or opt out and eat them plain. They are flaky and warm, filled with fruit toppings. Not only that, they are perfectly convenient to take on the run or to serve to your kids as an alternative to cereal. They come in the following flavors, Apple ( my favorite :), Apple Cream Cheese, Boston Creme Pie, Cream Cheese and Strawberry, Cherry, Danish Style Cream Cheese, Raspberry, Strawberry and Wildberry.

I love them! My kids and family love them! So when Pillsbury and My Blog Spark offered our family this wonderful "Million Morning Smiles" package giveaway compliments of my honest review, I couldn't wait. This package includes a free coupon to purchase a box of Pillsbury Toaster Strudel in our favorite flavor. Not only that, we also received a 12-inch plush Pillsbury Doughboy Giggle Doll that giggles when you squeeze him, a yellow smiley face placemat, coffee mug and stress ball.

I had the best part sampling the product, and my kids including my 17-year-old daughter absolutely adored the smiling coffee mug but laughs every time she squeezes the Pillsbury Doughboy Giggle Doll to hear him giggle!

Here's the best part, I get to share this "Million Morning Smiles" giveaway package with one lucky follower of my blog. Here's all you need to do to enter to win:

1. Be a follower of my blog, Reviews From The Heart.

2. Be a resident of the U.S. or have a US shipping address and No P.O. boxes please!

3. I must have a way to contact you so please include your email address along with your comment. You can use the words (at) or (dot) instead of the symbols.

4. Leave a comment and let me know what your family does to make mornings easier! The giveaway will end on December 17th and I will notify the winner by email.

Dining With Joy Giveaway and Review

Imagine all the cooking greats you've seen on TV, from Emeril to Rachel and more. What if behind all the lights and camera, they really couldn't cook? Not even boil water?

In the latest Lowcountry Novel by Rachel Hauck, "Dining With Joy", is the premise for the storyline. Joy can't cook. In fact the only reason she even has her own cooking show was to replace her father, Charles on the former, Dining With Charles show when he died. They knew Joy couldn't cook but since the show was so successful they didn't want to see it end.

Now Duncan Tate, the executive producer to her show is selling her show to TruReality without disclosing the one thing that would destroy it all, her inability to cook. Duncan convinces Joy that they don't really need to know because they are buying it based on how it's been going up to this point.

Enter Wenda Devine, Joy's cooking show rival that wants nothing more than to have a "cook off" to show the public who is truly the better cook. When she stages one on national TV with an up and coming local hunk/chef, Luke Redmond, her ultimate plan is to switch competitors without Joy knowing about it.

Will the network executives really find out about Joy's cooking secret? Will Wenda rise to the ranks of the best chef after exposing Joy? Will Luke come to Joy's aid and save the day in more ways than one?

To find out you will need to read, Dining with Joy, a classic for those cold, winter nights. I received Dining With Joy, compliments of TLC Book Tours for my honest review and found it to be beyond my wildest expectations and worthy of a 5 star rating!!!

This book is available in paperback and eBook formats. For more information about this amazing book, talented author, where to purchase a copy or read even more reviews from wonderful bloggers, click on the link below:

Rescue

Rescue can be defined in a number of ways. You can be rescued or you can be the one who rescues. In this case, rescue is also the name of the company that Peter Webster works for as an EMT.

Little did he know that his fate was about to meet on a rescue call one night when he pulls Shelia Arsenault from her over-turned car on a foggy country road, barely missing a head on collision with a tree. She is legally drunk and manages a short stay in the hospital where Pete is drawn to her and she is him. They fall in love and in a short time she announces that she is pregnant.

Peter's hopes and dreams for a future are suddenly thrust forward as he finds a way to move out of his parents home and find a way to make a living for him and Shelia. Life for them is a serious of bad decisions beginning on their fateful encounter and soon Peter discovers that Shelia isn't so quick to give up her alcoholic lifestyle even though she is expecting. Will fate rear it's ugly head again or will they both find it within themselves to rescue each other for the sake of their baby?

In the latest novel by Anita Shreve, Rescue, draws you in to the details of the decisions each person makes in the story. Peter strives for a better life than he had and now with a baby and family to care for, is more determined to make that happen. Shelia is looking for a way out of a bad relationship that is still haunting her from her past, and when Peter comes to her rescue, he does so in more ways than one.

I received this book compliments of Hachette Book Group for my honest review and must say I was captivated from the first page. I highly rate this one a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. For more information on this book, the author and where to get a first chapter peek, click on the link below:

The Charlatan's Boy

The Charlatan's Boy by Jonathan Rogers caught my interest right from the cover and continued to entrance me until I finally finished it! I loved it so much I finished the novel in a day! The Charlatan's Boy is about an orphan named Grady, who has been traveling around with a charlatan named Floyd who supports them by coming up with quick scams or sideshows, since as far back as he can remember. The problem is that Grady can't remember even the slightest detail of his childhood and doesn't know who he is or where he came from. The only answers to his past come from Floyd, who withholds most of what he knows from Grady.

These two struggle to make a living, made harder by the memory of better times when people from all the towns would flock to see Grady perform as “The Wild Man of Feechiefen Swamp.” But to their dismay, no one believes in " feechies" anymore. But not if Grady and Floyd can help it.

Together, these two extraordinarily colorful characters set out on the adventure of a lifetime and try to devise a plot to create another Great Feechie Scare which Floyd is convinced will make them rich again. Grady is more than enthusiastic about playing his part as a "feechie" once again, but he also can’t stop wondering after living a life full of unknowns, if he will ever know who he really is.

I received this book compliments of Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy for my honest review and have to say I have uncovered a 5 out of 5 stars within it's pages. Two Tickets To The Christmas Ball

If you ask anyone for directions, you're bound to get some strange looks.

If you try to Google it on the internet, it doesn't exist.

If you drive there to try and find it, you'll be wasting your gas.

On Sage Street, lies a part of town that few often see and even fewer know exist. Most carry on with their day to day lives and barely look up to see this part of town. Lined with an old candy shoppe, a toy store, a hotel, a costume shop, and a unique book store called Warner, Werner and Wizbotterdad's, you find the most quaint and pleasant place to be.

When Cora Crowder attempts to find a book for her uncle to finish off her Christmas shopping early, she finds an unexpected surprise waiting for her at the book store.

Simon Derrick, is a man who lives with his family including his Down Syndrome sister, Sandy who loves books. What better surprise to get her than a book at this unique book store on Sage Street.

Only when they both arrive home and find a ticket tucked into their books for a Wizard Ball does the holiday magic begin to arrive thanks to some angels God has so graciously provided along the way.

In the magical Christmas story, Two Tickets To The Christmas Ball by Donita K. Paul, the reader is transported to an enchanted tale of God's divine intervention to help Cora and Simon find the real meaning of Christmas. I could not book this book down as I didn't want to leave the story, it felt real and full of hope as you came to know Cora and Simon. Each has a different history that when woven together creates a lasting masterpiece in God's eyes.

I received this book compliments of WaterBrook Multnomah Publishers for my honest review, and not only did I receive an early Christmas present in reading this heart-warming story but I discovered a 5 out 5 perfect stars and comes with my highest recommendation. This is a must have if you collect Christmas classics and treasures like I do. I am keeping this one as part of my permanent library and can see reading it through the month of December with my children.

The Sherlockian

What every mystery hunter would love, that is a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, would be to solve a mystery of their own!

Well in fact that is just what newcomer, Harold White, discovers as he attends his first official meeting of the Backstreet Irregulars, a private membership of those individuals who have an deep interest in all things involving Sherlock Holmes. The holy grail of all the members is the elusive diary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle which has been missing for years. Only when a member by the name of Alex Cale announces he has discovered it, does the mystery truly begin.

When Alex is found murdered, Harold White takes it upon himself to solve the mystery much like his nemesis, Sherlock Holmes would have.

In the novel, The Sherlockian by Graham Moore, the reader is immersed from the first page into two different time periods, one dealing with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the famous author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries and a modern day mystery involving solving the murder of Alex Cale who purportedly had the original diary of Mr. Doyle's in his possession.

For those of you that love following clues, and unraveling the unknown mysteries in a great novel by fireside, this one is a must for you. I received this wonderful book compliments of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review and uncovered a 5 out of 5 stars!

This book is available in hardcover, audio and eBook formats. For more information on this book, the author and even a first chapter peek, click on the title below:

Welch's Healthy Start 100% Juice

I was so excited when I received this wonderful offer in the mail from BzzAgent. I immediately took it to our local grocery store to try Welch's Healthy Start 100% juice. I could only imagine how wonderful it would be with breakfast the next day.

Upon arriving at the grocery store, I headed to the refrigerated section where they keep the juices. I was so excited to see all three flavors offered, Concord Grape, White Grape Orange and Mango, and Blueberry Pomegranate . Since all this is 100% juice and contains no added sugar, I thought this would make for a perfect breakfast juice for my family.

I chose the Concord Grape to try. Since I still had all my coupons with me from my mail offer earlier, I offered them to the shoppers around me. Who knew just a simple gesture like that could produce so many smiles and genuine words of appreciation. Many asked me if I worked for Welch's or the grocery store, and I smiled and shared that I am a BzzAgent and get products occasionally to try. They loved the idea even more!!!

The next morning, I served Welch's Healthy Start 100% Juice with our Saturday morning family breakfast. What a delight it was to see our children's faces to something different over your standard Orange Juice. They loved it. What a surprise for them that we had Welch's for breakfast instead of later in the day with other meals or for drinks in between.

Our family voted hands down now to have Welch's Healthy Start 100& Juice with breakfast as well as throughout the day as needed. Not only do I feel great providing something I feel is good for them, knowing that it contains 100% and no added sugar makes me feel like a better mom.

I would highly recommend this product to any one who loves Welch's grape juice as a great alternative to your traditional breakfast juices and it's great for any time of the day. This one rates a perfect 5 out of 5 stars!

Dangerous Desires - Giveaway and Review

As the extractions expert for A-Tac, an elite CIA black ops unit masquerading as faculty at an Ivy League college, Drake Flynn knows how to survive behind enemy lines. But he's about to meet one adversary he can't subdue ...or resist.

A Race For Survival

Stranded in the Colombian jungle after a mission goes bad, Drake has only one objective: evade the mercenaries hot on his trail and deliver "the package" to U.S. officials. But "the package" has a mind of her own, and she has no intention of trading one set of captors for another. Madeline Reynard is beautiful, headstrong, and hell-bent on escape after years as a crime lord's pawn. She'll risk everything for freedom, even if it means deceiving the dark, handsome operative who now holds her life in his hands.

Drake has been burned too many times to let a woman manipulate him, especially a secretive one like Madeline. Even so, they cannot deny the attraction between them. Now as the enemy forces close in, Drake and Madeline must trust each other with their lives - or face certain death. (excerpt back cover).

My Review:

Drake's assignment was to rescue Madeline Reynard and return her to US officials. She was being held by a Columbian drug Lord. Unfortunately, his plan went awry. Madeline had been held prisoner for years and did not trust Drake to keep her safe. She was not going back, no matter what. Drake did not trust women and was determined not to let Madeline get under his skin, let alone steal his heart.

The attraction continues to grow between them. They realize they must work together as a team and they must trust each other.

Madeline shares her story with Drake. Her sister was a drug addict and she had been trying to help her when she was captured. Drake shares the story of his brother's death. Madeline believes she has seen Drakes brother.

Dangerous Desires by Dee Davis is filled with romance and action. The plot will leave the reader panting for more. The author transports readers to the jungles of Columbia. I felt as though I was part of the plot. I stayed up all night to finish this one.

I received this book compliments of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review and have to say it's captured a 5 out of 5 stars. For more information on this book, the author and even a peek at the first chapter, click on the title below:

Wishin' and Hopin' - Giveaway and Review

It's 1964, LBJ and Lady Bird are in the White House, Meet the Beatles is on everyone's turntable, and ten-year-old Felix Funicello (distant cousin to Annette!) is doing his best to navigate fifth grade - easier said than done when scary movies still give you nightmares and you bear a striking resemblance to a certain adorable cartoon character boy.

But there are still several things young Felix can depend on: the birds and the bees are puzzling, television is magical, and this is one Christmas he's never going to forget.

In Wally Lambs Christmas story, Wishin' and Hopin', we get a birds eye view of the life of Felix Funicello who attends a Catholic school, St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parochial School. He personally feels responsible for one of his teachers, Sister Dymphna, melt down, will always be second to Rosalie Twerski who out does him in everything from making cardboard display boards for Literature and English grammar rules as well as her constant souvenirs from her vacation spots that are shared in Science class and remains number one in the class..

This at a time when Russians were believed to be communists, his mother is about to be on national TV for the Pillsbury baking contest finals, and he is trying to fit in with the rest of the boys in the fifth grade.

To read all about Felix's confession, you'll have to check this wonderful book out. I have to warn readers that there is profanity and some strong subject matter when dealing with what 5th grade boys are thinking about during this stage of their life.

I received this book compliments of TLC Book Tours for my honest review and have to say for the most part I loved it. My hubby and I took turns comparing notes from our childhood to Felix's and some of the things he said were very memorable. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars just for the language and subject matter but otherwise it's a great story.

An Object of Beauty - Giveaway and Review

Lacey Yeager is a brilliant up and coming art student who upon graduating from college lands herself a job at Sotheby's as an intern. Starting at the bottom doesn't exactly pay the type of money that Lacey's been accustom to and she struggles to find a way to get there one way or another.

Her life is chronicled in sporadic details by her high school friend, Daniel Chester French Franks, as he meets with her through different times of her life. What he doesn't know as a fact he fills in to make the story complete. He is also an art school graduate and a former one night stand of Lacey's.

As Lacey works from the basement, cataloging pictures, she begins to look for her next step on the ladder of success. She begins to learn how art works are sold, which ones sell and why others don't. As she begins to work her way to the top, she finds out that they are more than objects of beauty but objects of value. Much of the way she begins to see a parallel in her own life. She begins to work towards the finer things in life she desires which means finding herself a rich, wealthy and successful man willing to lavish it on her.

In the latest novel by Steve Martin, former Saturday Night Live star, actor and now author, in Object of Beauty we see how Lacey's life and the art objects she finds and sells are similar and how certain some things can be rendered priceless.

I received this book compliments of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I would have to rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars just based on the content contained within the storyline itself that some readers may find offensive, such as profanity and sexual content. Overall I think the story shares a profound message that not all beauty can be seen from the outside.
