Phil Wickham - Children of God CD Review

I have been a huge fan of Phil Wickham's music for quite some time. I've had the privilege of being able to see him live in concert both at my church and at the Harvest Crusade in 2013. His music just moves you in such a way and what I find contagious about Phil Wickham is his undying love for Jesus Christ. It comes through in not only his music, lyrics but in his performance, Now I have the unique opportunity to be able to review his latest CD, Children of God. Even before I had the chance to listen to the entire CD, I fell in love with one of the songs from that track, Your Love Awakens Me, which is rising to the top of the Christian music charts!

Children of God contains 12 songs and truly contains exactly what one would expect to find, devotional songs of mighty worship and praise that will last long after you stop the final song. They are what I call worm songs or soul songs. Ones you find yourself singing when there is no music and that is part of the power and conviction of Phil Wickham's music.

1. Doxology/Amen -  is a worship song that defines the purpose of praise and worship music, that are prayers to Jesus Christ.

2. Better Than Life - will be just like what This is Amazing Grace was to Phil's previous album on this one! Definitely upbeat worship song!

3. Your Love Awakens Me - conveys the sense of what it is like for a believer of Christ to experience God's love in their life. It creates an awakening in their soul. This is such a catchy song and one I know you will absolutely love!

4. The Secret Place - features Madison Cunningham, talks about what its like when we experience God in our hearts. Its a place others can't see, but we can certainly feel. More like a worship song.

5. Wide Awake - Not one of my favorites on this one, but still an uplifting worship song.

6. My All in All - Speaks of the great love and presence of Jesus Christ, who is the stream of life and victor in any battle we face. A definite battle-worthy song!

7. Starmaker (High Above the Earth) - Definitely a worship song of our dedication for the salvation that Jesus Christ alone offers. I can this one being incorporated by churches as part of their praise and worship service!

8.  Children of God - Another great praise song. It conveys a song about whom children of God are in Christ. We are more than warriors, but children of God.

9. Stand in Awe - Another powerful praise song, that takes what a believer feels for God, and puts it not only in song, but in a prayer to our Heavenly Father!

10. Body Mind and Soul - another praise song, that conveys in the heart of the believer what where our praise and worship comes from, body, mind and soul.

11. As It Is In Heaven - a great song that comes off more like a prayer set to music.

12. Spirit of God - Speaks of our longing for the Spirit of God to have His in our life.

I received Phil Wickham's Children of God compliments of Fair Trade LLC and Propeller LLC for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside for a copy of this DVD in exchange for my personal and honest evaluation. Phil Wickham just has one of those amazing voices you can recognize the moment you hear him. His conviction and devotion comes across in every single song and that is what makes this such a wonderful CD a great addition to your praise and worship music library. This is his first album in three years, for in 2014 Phil Wickham didn't know whether or not he'd ever be able to sing again. He had vocal polyp, a small lesion on his vocal cords, and while doctors could remove it, the outcome would be up to God. Thankfully, we serve an amazing Healer and Creator and Phil is back once again. These are the songs of the reawakened heart, and his passion and love for God come through on every single song. For me, this rates a 4.5 out of 5 stars. The lyrics are not provided in the CD but you can find them by visiting philwickham.com.

Awakened

Sometimes we need to understand that there are certain things that can happen in this world, that are motivated by evil. While we may not see it, it exists in an unseen realm at times. Some movie fans flock to horror films like Paranormal Activity, thinking that is is simply a movie, but in reality, things like what you see happening on the big screen can and do happen in real life and the consequences can be life altering.

The latest DVD release from Word Films, Awakened, and isn't for the faint of heart or those who dislike movies on the supernatural. In this movie, Jacob Harker (Rob Boltin) is a newspaper reporter who has been laid off, just as his new wife Haley (Gwendolyn Edwards) announces she is pregnant. He insists that it will only be a matter of time until he is working again. Until then they move into a rental house that will offer them a bit of a break in their finances owned by Webster Cain (Michael Monks). He advises the couple that the basement still has old things he hasn't gotten around to cleaning out, but they are welcome to do it and utilize the space.

As Haley leaves for work, Jacob attempts to work on clearing out the basement space and uncovers an old reel to reel recording from Carol James (Hannah Hughes), who was involved in a car accident at an early age, that claimed the life of the up and coming new singer. As Jacob uses his investigative skills to dig deeper into the mystery of who Carol James really was, he finds himself becoming more and more obsessed with the ghost from the past, one that has a personal interest in Jacob and attacks Haley creating both fear and distrust in the Harker's home. It will take Haley using all her resources of faith to fight back against the evil that has found a home in their lives.

I received Awakened by Word Films compliments of Edify Media Inc and Word Films for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this DVD in exchange for my honest review. While the message is relevant, I believe the film lacks in the editing and production of the film. The sound quality of hearing the actors voices over the music is downright irritating and shows what a bigger budget might be able to pull off in the way this film attempts to get its message across. For me, the suspense element was there but the over all production quality just wasn't and for me, garners a 3 out of 5 stars in my opinion. Approximately running time of this DVD is 93 minutes. The message is what is important and that comes across pretty clear!

Anchor in the Storm

The one thing that Lillian Avery wanted more than anything was to be strong. She never wanted to be an imposition to anyone especially to her family. She had long given up on the hope of ever finding love again after being devastated in her last and final relationship. It is what gave her the determination to find a career so she could take care of her own needs. Being part of a large family, comprised of three older brothers and a twin sister, Lucy, she never wanted to be a burden to any of them. Lucy was the sickly one in the family and while she found a way to rub things in Lillian's face whenever she could, Lillian would not let herself be a victim. When she lost her leg in a hunting accident, she vowed to do all she can to learn to stand on her own two feet again.

Archer Vandenberg has tired of all the women in his life only wanting one thing from him, the chance to be Mrs. Vandenberg, heir to the Vandenberg fortune. His escape was to join the Navy. He just never expected to survive the sinking of his destroyer. Now the only thing holding him back is the raw nerves and shaking he experiences whenever he remembers being trapped inside the sinking ship. He can't seek any medical help because the Navy would remove him from service and send him packing under the medical care he might need. All he can do is pray that God will help him figure out how to heal him from the nightmares keeping him trapped.

When Archer is invited to Lillian's home for a two week stay, courtesy of his best friend Jim, Lillian's older brother, he jumps at the opportunity to escape going home to deal with all the drama unfolding at his own home. He wants nothing to do with Bitsy, who left him high and dry when he said he was joining the Navy. He finds solace in however, with Lillian who is not at all impressed with the charm Archer tries to pour on him. In fact, it seems to make her draw away from him even more. Jim warns him that Lillian is fragile when it comes to men trying to flirt with her and suggest they simply become friends instead. So when Lillian and Archer working on their friendship, it takes them to the unlikeliest of places, right in the middle of an apparent prescription drug ring that connects them both on board Archer's ship and at Dixon's Drug Store where Lillian works at a pharmacist. Just what is the connection?

I received Anchor in the Storm by Sarah Sundin compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Revell Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest and personal opinions. This is the second novel in the Waves of Freedom Series and one I am enjoying from first to last page. Sarah Sundin is an expert at taking an idea from factual history and incorporating her story lines and characters around it. I love Lillian's attitude of not feeling sorry for herself despite her disability. She is willing to take risks most wouldn't including being one of the first female pharmacists. She utilizes the assets she still has to be the very best she can be, no matter what she faces. I love that the chemistry develops slowly over the course of the novel and Lillian doesn't simply fall for Archer despite all the attention she receives from him. Add in a bit of mystery and you have the recipe for a successful and wonderful novel. For me this really hit a 5 out of 5 stars in my book. A Reader's Guide Discussion Questions are included which makes it perfect for book clubs and even a sneak peek into the third novel coming soon. Fans of WWII fiction will absolutely LOVE this novel!

Someone Like You

Who hasn't stopped and wondered about someone we loved a long time ago, but due to issues we simply parted ways. Perhaps it was a high school sweetheart or a college romance that lost its luster, but deep in the heart, you always wonder what if?

Zeke Monroe is the general manager at Caliente Springs resort that is trying hard to stay afloat among the drought ravishing the property in California among other things. Co-owned by the Travers twins Ginger and George, if something doesn't turn around soon, Ginger wants to sell the property and get out from the debt she senses maybe coming. For Zeke this isn't about simply selling and hoping that the new owners might keep the 200 employees on board, but this may in fact be 200 people whose livelihoods he has taken personal interest in. It is what has made him such a success and well loved and respected by those who work for him. Zeke knows that if Ginger gives him half a chance, he can bring this resort back to life. His one big hope is that Carter Home Goods might decide to use his resort as their vacation and training headquarters which will be a huge start. But it all rides on the meeting scheduled with Julia Dare.

Julia Dare is working with Carter Home Goods while trying to get her own company Dare to Dream off the ground as an event coordinator. Carter Home Goods has hired her to spend a few days checking out resorts that they offer as vacation perks to their employees and families throughout the year. If Julia loves them, Mr. and Mrs. Carter will spend a few days checking out her final pick. Julia had arranged to meet Ashley Tate for the final tour. She just didn't expect to meet Zeke Monroe, her old flame from Berkeley instead. They kind of parted ways in college and while Julia failed to give Zeke any details, she knew one thing for certain, the faith he shared with her back in college was the reason she walked away. But since finding it on her own, is there an opportunity for a second chance? Now the only thing standing in her way in her son, Max and his father Hunter, Zeke's old college rival.

I received Someone Like You by Victoria Bylin compliments of Bethany House Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of the novel for my honest and personal evaluation. I really loved the premise behind this novel. Old college sweethearts who find themselves working to pull off the wedding of a century with only 30 days to make it happen. You know things are going to get interesting when you add in a college rival bad boy and of course Julia's precocious son Max. There are bound to be sparks flying in all kinds of directions and the best part of all is love is the reward in the end, but it might just surprise you with whom! I'd rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars because to sit down and inhale it all in one sitting is a sign of a great novel in my opinion.

Worry-Free Living

When you think about worry-free living, you might think that is simply impossible to achieve. If you are a non believer and put your faith in your job, your bank account, your marriage, and even what you can achieve, you are 100% correct. Some day something will happen that will shake things up. You lose your job, you get that dreaded phone call from your doctor, your marriage falls apart, your children run away, even your bank account dwindles. However when you place your faith in God, the Creator of everything in the heavens and the earth, nothing is impossible, but it will take faith to see that happen.

I'm not saying that by being a believer, you won't have difficulties and won't be subject to the same things are non believers are, but we do have someone we can turn to, just like when a young child faces a problem, they know who to run to without any second thoughts. That is what the Bible means when it says to have child-like faith. They know by taking their troubles to mom or dad, thing will be okay. They will handle it and then they skip off knowing it's being handled.

In her latest book, Worry-Free Living, Joyce Meyer teaches you how to have that child-like faith, what it means to cast your anxieties upon the Lord, and how to trade your anxiety for peace that only God can provide. In just under 135 pages, this simple and easy to use book guides you through things like understanding what it means "to seek God's kingdom first, is the key to living in the peace of the Lord. To seek God's kingdom simply means to seek the know God and His ways. We are to seek God's kingdom and His righteousness over all other things ,and then everything else we need will be given to us as well. In other words, one reason we worry and fret and live in fear and anxiety is that we simply have our priorities mixed up. We are seeking our security in the things of this world rather than in the God who created this world. God meets the needs of every created thing, including you and me. As believers, we are supposed to seek Him, not to seek the fulfillment of our needs. If we will seek Him first, He has promised to provide for us in every way, to open the doors of opportunity He has for us, and to give us the security we need." (pg. 16).

I received Worry-Free Living by Joyce Meyers compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups in exchange for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this book in exchange for my personal and honest opinion. This little book is simply chalk full of great advice including a six step plan for God's peace in your life that anyone can follow. Combined with Scripture verses each of the 5 chapters focuses on specific things we can do to eliminate anxiety, manage stress and enjoy the present day that God intended us to do. One thing is true, the Bible is the perfect owner's manual to helping us enjoy every day of our life to the fullest. I'd rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

How Would Jesus Vote?

The elections are coming! We've gotten the phone calls, our mail boxes are being filled with all kinds of ads for the propositions and candidates, and on television, we have witnessed the debates coming from both sides of the spectrum for this presidential election. As a believer in Christ, we find it hard to sort through all the propaganda being streamed in from all kinds of sources. It seems no matter how much you research it, you can't get a straight answer on what you should vote for in order to line up with biblical standards.

So you find yourself wanting to fill in the blank or opt out of voting when no real candidate meets our criteria and perhaps that is the problem. In fact it makes you wonder, How Would Jesus Vote? Darrel L. Bock has written a great novel that digs into the meat of what makes our country what it is. How did our founding fathers so long ago deal with differences in both religious beliefs, race and a diversity that seems to be driving us apart more than united us together? He tackles all that and more in this wonderful book that gives us a different perspective using the Bible as a source of reference on how we look at such topics like racial conflict, economics, poverty, health care, immigration, gun control, foreign policy, war, education, sexuality, abortion and so much more.

Using the Bible to help us see things from Jesus' point of view really gives us something to consider when we look at what direction we want our country to move in and how to deal with difficult task of not only dealing with citizens, but also dealing with illegal immigration and the influx of refugees wanting to enter the country. I love how well thought out and researched this is and before reading it I was pretty resolved on several issues, however this one had me really rethink what I believe and more so, how I can debate with others and still respect their differences and love them as Christ would.

I received How Would Jesus Vote by Darrell L. Bock compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest and personal evaluation. I really wanted to read this novel to get a better understanding of how as a voter who believes in Jesus should vote when we find ourselves challenged to know what to do. This really helped and would be a great resource to anyone before this next election in November! I would rate this a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

The Progeny

Take an idea of a family of descendants of a brutal serial killer, add in a touch of both historical and futuristic science fiction, and you might just have an idea of what The Progeny, the latest novel by Tosca Lee is about. This is the first novel in the Descendants of the Blood Countess series. Some might say it perfect for fans of Dekker and Lee's series, the Book of Mortals, or fans of Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code and still others might compare it to the BBCs hit series, Orphan Black. Yet for me, a fan of anything Tosca Lee pens, I'm all in without having to read the synopsis of the book.

Without giving any of it away, know that this will be a trilogy if not more, so whatever happens in this novel will not be resolved by the conclusion. It will however, give you a bit of the back story of the main character, Emily Jacobs, and what motivates her to make the decisions she does in The Progeny. Emily Porter is not her real name, it is the name assigned to her after she goes through a procedure to erase her memories. It is vital that she does this because before the procedure she was hunted by one person assigned to do nothing but kill her and steal her memories. He has had 5 years to do just that. Emily's real name is Audra Ellison. She is one of a handful of illegitimate children her mother had before she was murdered.

It is a race against time for Audra to now discover, who she can trust, because she can't remember who she can or can't and has to rely on her quick wits and her ability to charm those through implementing thoughts into their heads to do what she asks of them. The one thing she can't influence is other progeny's and she must discover why she erased her memories before those she loves are killed one by one, while avoiding being killed by the one person who has been assigned to kill her and take whatever memories she has. Even more important is that her death carries with it the weight that the line of her families bloodline ends and she won't be able to produce anymore children. She isn't sure if she is the last one left, but now it is a race against time to uncover clues she apparently left for herself along the way in the hopes she might discover them one day.

I received The Progeny by Tosca Lee compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest and personal opinions. I absolutely LOVE this novel and can't wait to inhale the rest of it. To place it in any one particular genre is downright hard. It's part historical, suspense, thriller, fantasy, contemporary, action, drama, and romance. The one thing that is clear is that Tosca Lee once again has written an amazing novel and series, and now the wait begins for the next novel. This one rates a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

The Beautiful Pretender

Looking for some new takes on the old Medieval Fairy Tales we read as little girls with a more realistic version? Then pick up Melanie Dickerson's novels from her Medieval Fairy Tale series. In her latest novel, The Beautiful Pretender, we get a re-telling of a more realistic version of Beauty and the Beast. They are similarities in the story lines but in this one there is no magical curse that animates the household objects and turns our hero into a beast like character.

The Margrave of Thornbeck has been ordered by the king to find a suitable bride and to be married. Unfortunately that is the furthest thing from his mind. Left with a disability that keeps him with a perpetual limp and the use of a cane, he is more than frustrated with others telling him what to do. His close advisers suggest that invitations are sent out and for two weeks he can put these ladies through a series of tests to see which one most suits the qualities he is looking for in a wife.

Avelina, has been ordered by the Earl of Plimmwald to go in the place of his daughter, Lady Dorothea, who has run away with an unborn child with the Earl's knight. Avelina, as Dorothea's maid servant, knew of her intentions but said nothing to the Earl. Now he has placed all the responsibility upon her to go in Dorothea's place impersonating her under the premise that his kingdom is represented and her secret is kept safe. She must not wed the Margrave but convince him to help stand against those who would steal Plimmwald in an effort to conquer and rule over the land and its people. She just never expected to be one of those the Margrave is interested in, due to her unnatural lady-like opinions and her compassion to help those less fortunate than herself.

I received The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Thomas Nelson Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this novel, in exchange for my honest and personal opinions. I truly loved this novel and could see having this in my home as a fairy tale that I would feel comfortable telling my daughters and grand daughters. It provide a much more realistic version with attention to the true morals and character builders you would want to instill in your own children. The best part of these novels is that you don't know which one you are picking up until you begin the book. I love this version of my favorite Beauty and the Beast and will be adding the entire series to my own home library. For me this one easily garners a 5 out of 5 stars. This is the second novel within the Medieval Fairy Tale series, pertaining specifically to Thornbeck. The first, is the Huntress of Thornbeck Forest.

Her One and Only

Can you imagine a young, beautiful woman serving as a body guard to a NFL wide receiver? Doesn't this sound like some kind of prank football players might play on one another? Yet this is exactly the premise behind Becky Wade's latest novel, Her One and Only. Gray Fowler is that wide receiver for the Mustangs, and while he has been used to dealing with obsessive fans before, his team manager is taking it a bit more seriously. The threats seem to be getting more bold and while they remain short and simple the point is clear. Someone wants to see Gray Fowler dead.

That is where Dru Porter comes into play. While she might not seem much of a threat when you look at her, she has served in the Marines, is a national expert sharpshooter champion and is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, besides being raised among three older brothers. She make not look like much, but looks can be intimidating and they may in fact work on her behalf. When Gray suggests she pose as his girlfriend instead of a mere secretary or personal assistant for him, Dru is less than pleased by the idea. However it may just work out in the end. It allows her to stay close to him during her hours of protection and their cover story of her working as a preschool teacher during the day, sounds perfect. The only thing she hates it the idea that she might fall for this guy no matter how hard she tries not to and how insistent her brothers are that she keeps her mind on work and nothing else.

Gray has different ideas, despite his threats. Everyone knows most girls fall for the quarterbacks, and Gray's buddy Colin suggests a bet between the two. While it is easy enough to kiss Dru on their end, they both place a wager that they believe they can get her to kiss them first. For Gray his bet is his Rolex watch which Colin would just love to win, while Colin has placed his big flat screen TV up for grabs for Gray. Just imagine the bragging rights these guys would have over the other in the club locker rooms. Things are about to get interesting between the three of them, especially when Dru is the one stuck in the middle. What will she think when she discovers these guys are only interested in her to win a bet?

I received Her One and Only by Becky Wade compliments of LitfusePublicity and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this novel in exchange for my personal and honest opinions. I absolutely love the Becky took the opportunity to share this novel's conclusion in the Porter Family novels with Dru's story. I can't imagine the competition to measure up to three very masculine older brothers who have their own stories we have shared in the previous novels. Now each of them is settled and married beginning families of their own and while they have the best intentions on protecting Dru, she is one determined and strong willed woman with a mind of her own. I love this bit of a role reversal regarding a body guard scenario and love how it plays out throughout the entire novel. All of your favorite Porter brothers are back as this novel unfolds as well as a Reader Guide Discussion Questions at the conclusion that is perfect for book clubs. I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

I received Her One and Only by Becky Wade compliments of TLC Book Tours and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review.

Fading Starlight

Lauren Summer's career is on the pinnacle of success as she awaits to hear what the fashion experts have to say about her first dress making its red carpet appearance. She is the first intern to have her dress on public display and it will be a make it or break it opportunity depending on this one event. When the dress malfunctions and leaves the rising starlet in a less than compromising position, suddenly her entire future vanishes before her very eyes and with it comes a text message from her employer to not bother to show up for work on Monday.

In fact, they have decided to do what they can to black ball Lauren from ever hoping to work in the fashion industry again. Her only hope is to take a low paying job creating costumes for a theater group and she hopes she can remain out of the limelight and paparazzi. The biggest asset comes when the theater group offers her a chance to stay at a home in a secluded community along the coast with the promise she will be available for the contractors who are coming to restore the dilapidated home according to the Home Owner's association.

She has to promise to keep visitors at a minimum and never disturb the residents who are seeking privacy for their own reasons, especially Charlotte Montgomery, an elderly woman who sits in a huge Victorian home as a bit of a recluse. Lauren is given the opportunity to be restored to her former glory by a reporter seeking information about Ms. Montgomery and a murder mystery that has gone unsolved. She promises to investigate Lauren's mishap to see if it was all a publicity stunt. But will Lauren compromise her faith and integrity to get her former future in fashion back? What is Ms. Montgomery hiding and why is she always seen wearing beautiful ball gowns?

I received Fading Starlight by Kathryn Cushman compliments of TLC Book Tours and Bethany House Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this novel in exchange for my personal and honest evaluation. I absolutely adored this novel and read it in one sitting. I love the premise behind this one as both renovating old homes and uncovering the mysteriousness about Charlotte Montgomery and her former glory days as a starlet in Hollywood. I've been a huge fan of all the older Hollywood films and believe they hold a sense of awe in the wonderful decades that they came from in regards to fashion and the rumors circulating behind those starlets. In my opinion this one rates a perfect 5 out of 5 stars and has found a permanent home in my personal library.

Light of the Last

I've been a huge fan of Spiritual Warfare fiction since my introduction to the genre after reading Piercing the Darkness and This Present Darkness from Frank Peretti. I know find myself drawn to any novels that pertain to the spiritual realm of angels and demons and the unseen warfare that happens all around us without being seen.

Light of the Last is the latest book in the Wars of the Realm series, by Chuck Black and is the perfect fit into the spiritual fiction novel. However since this is book 3 in the series, you must read them in order to understand where the reader will wind up in this novel. Drew Carter has been given the uncanny ability to see into the spiritual realm during an accident in college. However he doesn't understand what it is he sees since he remains unsaved and a non believer, but he knows others can't see what he can. He is also being trained in a unique way to prepare for a future battle and when his talents are put to the test, Drew comes through with flying colors until he takes down two CIA agents and winds up facing prison for the rest of his life unless he tells them what is really going on. But how can Drew really explain it when he doesn't understand what is happening.

The CIA knows the Drew could be extremely valuable to them if he is willing to undergo extensive training and work for them. His only other choice is prison for a very long time. The one condition to accepting the position of working with the CIA is he can't tell anyone he knows nor can he have any contact with them for the next 30 years. What a choice? In the spiritual realm a secret has been uncovered which will put Drew under protection of the angelic armies because if they fail, the darkness will gain a victory that will hold unprecedented consequences for both the seen and unseen world.

I received Light of the Last by Chuck Black compliments of WaterBrook Multnomah Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this novel in exchange for my personal and honest evaluation. I really loved this series and especially this novel. I hope this will not the be the last. The one thing I wish was because there is a great span of time between the release of each novel, I would love if the author would do a small recap within the storyline to refresh the minds of the readers of his subsequent novels. I do love the character list that is included at the beginning as there are quite a few to keep track of both in the seen and unseen realms of both light and darkness. For me, this one rates a 5 out of 5 stars.

Broken Ground

I can't imagine trying to find a way to start all over again. To pick up the shattered pieces of your life and move forward. To know that while your parents might mean well, they don't know what it means to you to put your grief aside and make a fresh start even though you don't know the outcome. That is the thoughts and emotions of twenty-one-year old Ruth Warren who married the absolute love of her life, Charlie and settled in for a life despite the hardships of the Texas Dust bowl. Charlie works for the oil company and when an accident one day robs her of any future and family, Ruth falls into despair.

Most of the men living in the small town have also been a victim of that explosion and now all the families are packing up and headed west for new promises that they have heard of in California. All Ruth has even wanted beside love, is to learn. Learn things she has been told a woman shouldn't learn or told they don't pertain to her. So when she moves back home at the insistence of her parents, she takes up venturing back to her favorite place the library. She is immediately consoled by her favorite librarian who offers her a chance at a fresh start when the college applications she and Charlie had filled out, come back with full scholarships and a chance at a new future in Pasadena, California. The only issue is telling her parents.

As Ruth heads out to Pasadena she has her first experience in Union Station at discrimination and the way Mexicans are being placed on a train to be deported back to Mexico. It is when she takes her education to an entirely new level the more she learns about what is happening to those around her who have little say in what is happening and she finds a likely ally in Thomas Everly who will inspire her to new heights of hope not only in the lives of those she is helping but in her own life as well.

I received Broken Ground by Karen Halvorsen Schreck compliments of Howard Books, a division of Simon and Schuster Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest and personal evaluation. I love it when you find a great novel that tackles subjects from history that may have been briefly touched on, but are missing from our history books as of late. The author note at the end of the novel shares Karen's personal journey of how this novel evolved from one thing and arrived at the novel it is today. I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars.

A Lesson in Hope

I love small towns. Perhaps it is because you truly get to know everyone in them and there are no strangers. Harmony is one of those places, in the fictional world of Philip Gulley anyway and A Lesson of Hope is the second novel for fans of the Harmony series, that takes us back once again to the people who live there. From Sam Gardener, the pastor of Hope Friends Meeting, one of several churches in town, who is trying to hang onto his job in light of those who saw him filling this position as a temporary sort. You have your long time residents who sit on the board whenever there is an issue and I would have to say that these folks are a bit vocal in how they deal with anything concerning the church. They are not your nice small town church folks, you would think of.

When one of their own passes away Olive Charles, she leaves the church in a dither about leaving them a million dollars to be used as they see fit. Well of course, each of the board members sees fit to use the money in the manner they most want, from Wayne Newby who believes the church needs a new roof. But since they have insurance on the church he feels they should simply punch holes in the existing roof and call it hail damage and submit a claim. When Sam tries to argue that this would be lying, Wayne does it anyway and falls off the roof in the process.

Meanwhile, Olive's niece, Regina who hasn't seen her Aunt in more than 20 years shows up at the funeral service to pay her last respects in a drunken stupor hoping that there might just be an inheritance in the making and wonders if any other family members have come forward. When she learns Olive left all her withholdings to the church, she immediately gains a lawyer to sue the church board for what she believes she is entitled to. When that doesn't seem to be working, she hires a slick lawyer on TV to sue the church for one million dollars for the uneven payment she claims she slipped on and now can no longer work. Seems like small town life for the residents of Harmony just got more interesting.

I received A Lesson in Hope by Philip Gulley compliments of Center Street Publishing for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside from a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest and personal opinion. Having read A Place Called Hope, I was looking for a repeat of the same, but found it extremely difficult to get interested in the lives of those in the church who seemed more motivated by selfish gains than being what I would call true believers. Perhaps that is what internally what most folks might think, but these people make it their livelihood to voice their discontent even at the expense of others. That was my biggest disappointment of all. For that reason I could only give this one a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Others might have a different viewpoint, but I found it truly hard to care about any of the characters in this novel.

Living Hope - DVD Review

Ever considered being a missionary or head out on a missions trip to South Africa? You might want to check out Living Hope, a documentary on the lives of three missionaries who each have found hope in the darkness of despair in the DVD release from Word Films.

Living Hope is the story of three extraordinary individuals who have devoted their lives to serving the poor in South Africa. It is a feature length documentary of about 90 minutes created by the filmmakers behind Journey to Everest, Apostles of Comedy and Honoring a Father's Dream: Sons of Lwala.

We see the stories of John Thomas, a pastor who is leading his church to serve the sick, hungry and dying in the communities that surround them. Journey beside John through the neighborhoods where they work, meet the people their ministry has impacted, and hear from his heart why they chose to make a stand for the poor.

Joey Lankford, a businessman and father of four who moved his young family from the United States to Cape Town. Journey beside Joey as he equips men and women with job skills and leads them out of the bondage of poverty.

Finally, Leonie Rustin, a single mom and nursing assistant, who turned from a life of crippling drug addiction to follow Christ. Journey beside Leonie, as she attempts to help others in her community to unshackle the chains of addiction and prostitution.

I received Living Hope by Word Films compliments of Word Films and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this DVD in exchange for my personal and honest evaluation. This documentary is perfect for any one considering entering into becoming a missionary or considering taking part in a missions trip to South Africa. Narrated by Joel Smallbone of For King and Country, this is such an impactful moving film that shows Christians taking on the task of helping the poor, destitute and the needy as Jesus commanded. When others question the motives of Christians, they need not look far to see how people are helping around the globe and these are just three of the remarkable people who gave up their own lives to help others find purpose in theirs. This is Dove family approved and winner of 5 doves from the Dove Foundation as well as the winner of the Great Commission Award from the Attic Film Festival in 2014 as well as the Official Selection in the UK Christian Film Festival in 2015. For me this one resounds with a 5 out of 5 stars.

Just Life

Could you imagine simply turning in your dog because of a viral outbreak? What if you had no choice? What if you were mandated to do so under the fear that you might never see your dog again if they believe that destruction is necessary to prevent the spread of the virus to keep from killing children? How far would you go?

These are the choices that residents of Riverside, a small neighborhood in New York have been asked to do as part of a quarantine to prevent the spread of what the CDC has determined might be a killer rabies virus. First they thought the recent deaths of the children of Riverside was caused by the bird flu, but tests are coming back confirming that it is rabies and with the presidential election coming, the Governor wants to ensure that his rally goes off in Central Park without any issues.

Samantha Lewis, owner of Finally Home, a non kill pet shelter and veterinarian has her work cut out for her. Not only does she have to find homes for the pets currently in her shelter due to a mandate from the city that they are closing her shelter but they have placed a quarantine on the cities dogs within Riverside. She can't bear the thought of how the CDC will handle the situation if they deem the dogs are the carrier. Despite all the tests and blood work she is doing on the dogs being brought into her from the residents, she knows once people go into panic mode, the dogs will be slated to be killed in order to contain the virus. But based on all her knowledge is seems suspicious that rabies would find a way to cross over to humans without being bitten. She will have to reach out to the one person who can help her and the one person she doesn't want to call. Her father.

I received Just Life by Neil Abramson compliments of Center Street Publishers, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside from a free copy of this novel, in exchange for my honest and personal opinions. This is such a great novel despite the profanity and makes you consider just how we handle these viral outbreaks with the slaughter of animals that are called into question. This really impacted me personally as a pet lover, and wondered just what I would do if called to give up my dog knowing they might be killed in an effort to contain the viral outbreak. Humans or animals? That is the choice up for debate in this political thriller! For me this rated 4 out of 5 stars only due to the profanity and my own personal rating system I have established. Without it, 5 out of 5 stars.

Get Your Hopes Up

"Evaluating our hearts is an important exercise as we begin this journey of hope together, because hope in God and positive expectation are very closely related to faith. For the sake of discussion, we can easily say that the level of your expectation is the level of your faith. Show me a person with low expectations, and I'll show you a person using very little faith. But show me a person with big expectations, and I'll show you a person acting with bold faith." (pg 7).

In her latest book, Get Your Hopes Up, Joyce Meyer tackles the issue of hope. Finding it, understanding what it is, how to keep it and what does the Bible say about it. Like all good Joyce Meyer's book. Mama Joyce gives readers the bold and honest truth. Not something sugar coated to make you feel good, she preaches like the best of them. I love the many aspects of hope you will find in this book and perhaps my favorite is that of what Joyce called spiritual possums. Whenever a difficulty or storm comes into their life, they play possum. They stop moving as if they have hit an impenetrable wall and their faith and hope go right out the window.

Rather than getting active, they get passive. When times get tough, when they're dealing with pain or disappointment, they freeze. They just stop moving. Does this sound familiar? Have you ever found yourself in a holding pattern because of an unexpected trial or a crushing disappointment? I want to encourage you in the midst of your pain that sometimes the very best thing you can do is just keep moving. You may not have all the answers yet. You may still be shocked by the circumstances around you. You may even feel like the world is caving in around you. In the midst of those difficulties, if you'll just keep moving, it will help you not to become hopeless." (pg 87).

There is so much great advice to counter all the negative self talk we've become accustom to and the one huge take away for me, was that hope is a powerful thing, but it doesn't thrive in an atmosphere of can't! Joyce uses her own personal stories and that of others to help draw us to the conclusion that we can find hope in any situation if we are but willing to look and trust God to help us as our first resource not our last one as we are prone to do.

I received Get Your Hopes Up by Joyce Meyer compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this book in exchange for my personal and honest evaluation. Like all of Joyce's books that are in my personal library, this will be a book I will consult quite often when I need a good dose of reality. Friends and family can mean well but often times, they don't make us feel any better when we need the God's honest truth, to get us back into the game of life again. Joyce's book does just that. For anyone facing a difficult time or situation, this is the perfect book to help them move past the situation for now and see what God has in store for them today. Well worth all of the 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

Check out Hallmark Channel's When Calls the Heart Series, based on the novel from author Janette Oke and executive producer Michael Landon Jr. Now in its third season, the DVD When Calls the Hearts: Troubled Hearts is released to fans of the series known simply as "Hearties!"

The entire series is based on a fictional town in the west known simply as Hope Valley, formerly Coal Valley. Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) leaves her well to do family in Hamilton to head west in search not only for adventure but answering the ad for a school teacher. She falls in love with Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing), a Canadian Mounty, and realizes that she has finally found a true home. In this episode, Elizabeth finally has her own home, at last after living with Abigail Stanton (Lori Loughlin), owner of the cafe. She is excited as she prepares to write her novel of life on the frontier in her new home but first it will need more than fixing up and Jack is just the person to lend a hand. He had hoped that one day he would build her a home, but for now those plans are on hold.

Rosemary begins to see signs that her love interest Lee Colter, the owner of the Sawmill might be having financial difficulties and she lends a hand helping him to economize and save money at every opportunity without first confronting him. She believes its not her place to ask if he needs money. Meanwhile just as things are beginning to look up for Abigail as she expresses an interest in Pastor Frank, an unexpected visitor Jesse shows up to make things difficult based on Frank's past he is keeping hidden. Things are about to get complicated once again for the residents of Hope Valley!

I received When Calls the Heart: Troubled Hearts compliments of Word Films and Edify Media Group for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of the DVD in exchange for my heartfelt and honest opinions. There honestly has not been much I don't like about this series, except that you have to wait for each new season! The DVD's however help to pass the time. This one includes exclusive behind the scenes interviews  and runs about 84 minutes in length for the feature. This is truly one series that every single member can enjoy and fans of Little House on the Prairie will definitely want to make sure you pick this entire series up from the beginning. Oniza 3 in 1 Camera Lens

Sometimes its too much to grab a bulky full size camera along especially with all the advancements in camera technology and the versatility of having your smart phone handy. Add in all the latest photo editing software and your just about set. Now you can also add on Oniza 3 in 1 camera lens designed specifically for use on your iPhone, HTC, Samsung smart phones as well as your iPads, Tablets, PC's or laptops that have a camera included in them.

The Oniza 3 in 1 camera lens offers you three unique lens capabilities, Fisheye, Macro and Wide Angle. You simply clip on the lens of your choice on your device and ensure that it is over your devices built in lens and you're all set. I found that I truly enjoyed the Macro the best because it blurs the outer edges so your focus is on the detail in the center of the lens.

The top photo shows the image from my Samsung 4 phone without the lens and the bottom is with the macro lens attached. It blurs the outer edges so you can focus on the "shift" button photo.

The only downside I found to using the clip on lens is that based on the size of the case you have, you might need to remove it in order to line up correctly so you don't see an edge from the lens. The wide angle lens offers a 180 degree view point of what your camera sees which helps if you're not a pro using the panorama function on your device like me. All the lens fit in a smart fabric bag that you can tuck into your purse or pocket and you're ready to use. This definitely gives you some incredible options to take your own photography to a whole new fun level. For the price point, you can't beat it!

I received the Oniza 3 in 1 camera lens kit compliments of Oniza and the VIP Power Club for an honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from the Oniza 3 in 1 Camera Lens Kit to try in exchange for my honest and personal opinion. You get three lens, a fiber cleaning cloth, a fabric holding bag, and rubber covers for each of the lens, along with a clip to fit your device. For the price point, this is definitely worth it in my opinion. I would give this product a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion and love the convenience of taking this with me for more photo options in using my smart phone. Teens will definitely LOVE it as my 17-year-old daughter commandeered mine when I got it.

Messenger By Moonlight

I have such passion for historical fiction novels based on historical facts, in this case the Pony Express as the backdrop for Stephanie Grace Whitson's latest novel, Messenger By Moonlight. While the story line revolves primarily around Annie Paxton, the sister of Emmet and Frank, who find themselves in a bit of a predicament when they find their family home and farm lands sold from out under them to settle their father's excessive debts. Believing that God is in the details, they pack all their belongings into three trunks and head out to St. Joseph, Missouri in search of new futures. One thing is for certain, Emmet and Frank want to make sure that all of Annie's dreams come true and that begins with finding ways to earn money so she can have the home she has always wanted.

Frank and Emmet try their hand at auditioning for the Pony Express and find that they are but a handful that will be based in remote home station in Nebraska. Fearing she will be left alone, the brothers assure Annie, that they have secured her a job as a cook at the station house working for George Morgan, a man with a less than stellar reputation, but one they feel will be the best for all of them. They promise Annie if they can all do their part for two years, she will have everything she has ever wanted and more. For Annie it will mean learning to cook for more than 4 people, as not only will she have to deal with the stagecoach passengers but men who serve one of the local outposts at the fort as well. In fact, they are sure, Annie will have no problem with being alone once the local population finds out how beautiful the local cook at the station house is.

Now they will each face uncertainties they had never dreamed of before. Annie is trying to find her way in a world she knows very little about, working for gruff old man who has very little to say to her and instead keeps out of her way most of the time. Frank has to come to terms with the fact that Annie and Emmet have their faith to fall back on, while he struggles to come to terms with the fact that there is a God often times when you least expect Him to show up. Emmet, believes that he can save up enough money to secure the future of a girl he left in Buchanan County, Missouri if he can prove he can provide for her. But like all great novels, things aren't going to be as simple as that.

I received Messenger by Moonlight by Stephanie Grace Whitson compliments of Faith Words, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation aside from a free copy of this book, in exchange for my honest and personal opinion. I really loved this novel because it involves not only Annie's story but also that of Emmet and Frank. They each have a bit of growing up to do and the challenges of life on the wild frontier is not always an easy one. The challenges of riding for the Pony Express isn't as straight forward as you might imagine as riding long distances can take a physical toll of the body as well as dealing with adversities like Indians, uncooperative horses and weather just to name a few. But the mail must move forward and this is a well written and engaging novel that fans of historical fiction will absolutely LOVE! 5 Stars in my opinion. An author's note at the conclusion of this novel highlights some of those unique facts about the Pony Express she used in the creation of this novel.
