When Calls the Heart: Heart and Home - DVD Review

Those of us that adore Hallmark Channel's series, When Calls the Heart, are referred to as "Hearties" and now with the introduction of Heart and Home, the latest DVD from the series has now caused a bit of a stirring up among our favorite characters.

Just when we believe things are settled, there comes a bit of chaos to the mix. Charles is still there as Elizabeth Thatcher's (Erin Krakow) childhood friend that seems to be encouraged by those in Elizabeth's family, all but her sister Julie, that Charles would make a more suitable match than Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing). As they both arrive back to Hamilton with news that Julie and Jack's brother, Tom have been involved in a car accident, the car belonging to Elizabeth's dad. He is all set to prosecute to the full extent of the law and have Tom tossed in jail. He knows that Julie has been a bit headstrong in her opinion that she and Tom are in love and had hoped to get married. But there is one thing Mr. Thatcher wants to control is who his daughters marry and he isn't too thrilled to have either of the Thornton men with interests in his daughters.

As Jack and Elizabeth arrive, the tables get turned a bit for viewers. Jack spends time visiting with his brother Tom in the hospital and manages to convince Elizabeth's father to drop the charges against his brother especially when evidence Jack uncovers tells a much different story about who was really driving the car that day. However he does find a friend in Tom's nurse Faith as the two discover they have quite a bit in common. As a way of thanking her for all her help, Jack meet Faith over dinner and is discovered by Elizabeth's sister and her husband.

Not one to keep secrets she is quick to let Elizabeth know that she saw Jack having dinner with another room, which once again throws a monkey wrench into our favorite couple. Julie and Tom decide not to let their families tell them what to do and make plans to elope. Rosemary is head over heels with the excitement that she has managed to convince Lee Colter to build her a theater. Of course what man wouldn't for a woman he loves. But he still has issues with Mr. Gowen who has vowed to put an end to the impending railroad contract that would promise to be quite the thing the town needs to bring more industry to the town of Hope Valley and make Lee a very wealthy man. But with Elizabeth now heading back to Hamilton to deal with the issues with her family, she leaves the school to a back up teacher who has a less than pleasing disposition with her students and Rosemarie offers to lend a hand of course.

I received When Calls the Heart: Heart and Home from Word Films and Edify Media Group for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review, aside from a free copy of the DVD for review, the opinions contained here are strictly my own personal ones. I have loved this series from it's inception and from Janette Oke's novel which inspired the show. It is one of the true shows that is still family appropriate for all ages much like Little House on The Prairie did for my childhood. Michael Landon Jr is the executive producer and truly the show gets better with each new episode. Much of what I love about this series, it's the fashions and the simplicity of life in Hope Valley compared to that of Hamilton. For me, another 5 out of 5 stars and I can't wait for more. This DVD runs approximately 84 minutes and includes some exclusive behind the scenes interview.

Catching Faith - DVD Review

Who doesn't want the perfect family. Successful, strong marriage, loving home, wonderful children who are striving for success in their own personal ways? What if that was all an illusion to those who were living that life? What if from the outside, things looked perfect, but underneath, is was all a well staged act in hopes that one day it might become real?

Catching Faith is the latest DVD which showcases the lives of the Taylor family and from the outside, it all looks perfect. John and Alexa are the loving married couple who are the epitome of parental involvement in the lives of their two children Beau and Ravyn. They attend all of Beau's football games because as the quarterback, he is well on his way to a professional career and one that is finally giving his team hopes of a championship. Ravyn is on track to become her high schools valedictorian, acing every single one of her courses and when she learns she has been accepted for early enrollment at the college of her choice, she is beaming with the wonderful news.

But on the inside it is all a facade. Beau winds up attending a party at the home of friends whose parents are out of town, and finds himself drinking to keep up with the pretenses of everyone there who idolizes him among his peers and teammates. Ravyn learns that unless she can improve her grade in Latin, she will fall from her status as graduating from a valedictorian to a salutatorian, which is something she can't stomach. When she is asked to make copies of the Latin final, she learns that the answer key is also among the papers and feels she has been given a way out.

But when tragedy strikes and Alexa loses her father, things will begin to spiral downhill as the family attempts to deal with the circumstances while trying to maintain the perfect image of what their family should look like to those in their community. It is a true struggle of what it truly means to have faith in God that He will make all things right in His own timing even though we might not like the outcome in how the world will see us. It shows that if you stick together, you have a great starting point in changing circumstances for the better but only through your faith in God first!

I received Catching Faith by RLJ Entertainment and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. This DVD is currently available for preorder at your local Christian retailer right now, and will be released in early August. For fans of football movies that teach about faith, you will definitely want to add this to your collection. It opens up some great topics of conversation with your family from personal faith, commitment, drinking and cheating and what those outcomes might be like for those who participate in them. In my opinion, there is no greater need right now than to enforce a strong sense of faith within the family than ever before and the reason why I give this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Virtuous - DVD Review

In light of programming available for our families, it is such a thrill to find incredible movies that are not only amazing but share a valuable moral lesson straight from the Bible as if they are modern day parables. Receiving 5 out of 5 Doves, by the Dove Foundation, Virtuous from JC Films has been released on DVD for your home entertainment. It conveys the message behind the Proverbs 31 woman, one of faith, integrity, wisdom, and honor!

Singer/songwriter Brandy Allison stars as Simone Burner, a young college student who is returning home late one night after working a double shift as a waitress only to be followed by a man Patrick Walters, she meets with a group of friends outside a club. They want Simone to stay and enjoy the evening but she is too tired to stay. Instead of accepting her refusal to join them, Patrick tries to convince Simone to come stay with them, and no matter how hard she tries to dissuade him, he won't take no for an answer. Inside a dark alcove as they struggle, he is shot and Simone is left as a person of interest, especially when the gun she said she found on the ground outside her apartment goes missing.

A District Attorney looking for re-election caves to the wealth of Patrick's grandfather, who insists that Simone be charged with murder and her arrest be made swiftly. They incorporate one of the officers assigned to the case,  Detective Avery, who is convinced that Simone is guilty despite all the evidence facing her. She is assigned the case along with sealed documents from Simone's less than stellar past to help bring about the charges as quickly as possible. Simone's only chance for redemption is through an attorney Jack Evans (Erik Estrada) who offers free consultation for any case. Along the way, three other stories begin to emerge along the way of other women who are struggling to find their own self worth in a world that wants only to condemn and control them.

I received Virtuous by JC Films and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review with only a complementary copy of the DVD provided. The opinions in this review are strictly my own. I really LOVED the overwhelming theme of the movie as it really pertains to women's struggle for discovering self worth and affirmation doesn't need to come from the world or anyone but through knowing we are daughters of the One True King, Jesus Christ! A must for any young girl struggling with low self esteem or finding out who she is outside of what the world has to offer. There is even a Behind The Scenes Look with the Cast and Crew included and a Discussion Guide is available at VirtuousFilm.com. Well worth every single 5 out of 5 stars!

Iesodo: Joy - Unto Us a Dove is Born

Iesodo (YAY-sa-doe) is a highly acclaimed Telly Award winning series featuring a cast of animated birds who live in a Cypress Tree on the shores of Galilee. Presented with cutting edge imagery, Iesodo, which means "the way of Jesus", is a wise and gentle dove that gives an allergory to the stories and messages of Jesus with "solid biblical teaching." (American Family Journal). With each and every story, he and his lovable feathered friends "present the essence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a winsome, compelling way."(MovieGuide.org).

Zaya Toonz, the animation company behind Iesodo, assemble a collaboration of animation experts with the experience in both the children's and Christian markets. Directors for the series include Brian E. Ray who credits consist of the "Muppet Babies," "My Little Pony Tales" and "Ed, Ed, and Eddy," as well as Colin Brady, who credits include "Toy Story," "Toy Story 2" and "A Bug's Life." Brady also served as the former animation supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios. The Iesodo series features the voice of Erin Bethea ("Fireproof," "Amazing Love") as Maggie.

In Joy: Unto Us A Dove is Born, Iesodo and his feathered friends bring your favorite New Testament stories to life in a whole new way including the special re-imagining of the Nativity story. Let your heart take flight and tweet along to the holiday carols and all-new songs! Festivities are in full swing as the flock prepares to celebrate Iesodo's birthday! The Cypress Tree is decked out with holly berries and excitement is in the air. Everyone gathers as Rocky shares the incredible story of Iesodo's birth.

I received Iesodo: Joy - Unto Us a Dove is Born compliments of Capital Christian Distribution and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and received a complimentary copy of the DVD in exchange for my review. This is such a beautiful series. The animation is top-notch and the songs are ones I know your children will be singing long after this DVD ends. I love how they incorporated the story of Iesodo's birth with the New Testament story of the Nativity. We get to see how important his birth is, just like understanding Jesus' birth is to believers. I love the Wise Owls who come riding turtles in search of the king. The animal characters they use to represent the various characters from the Nativity are well thought out and I know this is one that families will love to add to their home library collection. There are also some extras on the DVD such as Bible Connections with Pastor Tim, Christmas at Natalie's Nest, Bible Verses and a Christmas Sing-A-Long. I only wish this was available when my children were younger. By far, this one rates an easy 5 out of 5 stars. I would encourage you to pick up a copy in time for the perfect Christmas gift.

When Calls the Heart - Change of Heart

As the series comes to it's close for the first season for When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel, we find our favorite characters on the verge of making some tough choices. In the DVD release of Change of Heart, which includes episode 9 and 10 from the series, we find Elizabeth Thatcher and Jack Thornton finally being able to do what we, the viewers, have been hoping for all along, their first official date and the acknowledgment of those feelings we see just below the surface each time these two find themselves in close proximity of one another. Jack works with Abigail to make preparations to impress Elizabeth and show her just how fond he is of her and to let her know how serious he is about their courtship since their first date took place in the saloon. Jack has definitely stepped up his game and impressed Elizabeth.

But just as Jack believes his personal life is finally moving forward, he receives notice that his request for transfer that he put in when he first arrived in Coal Valley has been approved. Now he is unsure what to do. If he refuses the transfer, it may end his career as constable for the mounties, but if he takes the position, he is unsure how it will impact the courtship he has with Elizabeth and if she will even want to wait for him.

Elizabeth's sister Julie arrives on the stage as a surprise to Elizabeth in hopes of finding out what living out west is truly like. She wasn't planning on finding a wounded man, Nathaniel, in a cabin while out riding, in need of medical attention and secrecy to his condition. He convinces her that he's been trying to get away from being part of the Tolliver Gang that his brother has been forcing him to be a part of. He simply wants a better life away from being a wanted man and trying to start over fresh in hopes of starting a marriage and family if he can find the perfect woman.

Mr Gowan attempts to further his business partnership with Abigail Stanton who runs the cafe in town. Jack tells Abigail that he has discovered that the mining accident that killed most of the men in town, including her husband and son, may not been an accident. It may have been caused by Mr. Gowan cutting a few corners and he hopes to find the evidence to prove it. Abigail takes it upon herself to be the one to do it if she can find a way into Mr. Gowan's office. Soon all three paths will cross and fate may claim more than one life in the process, but it will forever change all of their lives.

I received When Calls the Heart: Change of Heart compliments of Word Films and Edify Media Group for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. This has been one of my favorite shows on the Hallmark Channel this year and I love that it is available on DVD. Michael Landon Jr is executive producer on the series inspired by the novels of Janette Oke and is definitely one the entire family can enjoy together. It inspires us that in the face of adversity, hope can still be found in banding together with family and friends. If you LOVED Little House on the Prairie, I would encourage you to check out this series. For me this one easily claims a 5 out of 5 stars. This is the 5th in the series to date.

A Long Way Off

Looking for a modern day retelling of the prodigal son? Then you just might want to take a look at Word Films newest DVD, A Long Way Off. It begins with the Abraham family who is in the farming business that employs two sons, Seth (DAVE BLAMY/Army Wives), the eldest and Jake (JASON BURKEY/October Baby), the youngest. Seth understands that hard work is required in order to make a family farm successful even in tough economic times. He is the one that has stayed behind to help his father out, while Jake left to seek a higher education in college. Even though Jake returns, his heart isn't interested in farming any longer. He believes he is wasting his college talent trying to update the farming business.

His lack of responsibility is apparent to everyone, when Jake shows up late and updates the invoicing system against his fathers wishes, costing them more than just a loss of business. No matter how hard Jake tries, he wants out and if his father won't support him, he will quit and find another way. But like the father in the biblical sense, Mr. Abraham (JOHN DIEHL/Stargate) gives Jake his inheritance to find a life that suits him better. Armed with more money than he knows what to do with, Jake leaves his family behind in attempts to prove them all wrong and become a successful businessman and financial consultant. But the world is a big place filled with people who are just as selfish as Jake and will stop at nothing to ensure that they make as much money off of Jake as they can when they see his financial investments are paying off. But life isn't about to turn out like Jake wanted and soon he will bite off more than he can chew.

I received A Long Way Off compliments of Word Films and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. While this DVD is Dove Foundation Approved, I would caution parents that this might not be suitable for the entire family. There are parts of the movie where Jake encounters Laura, an up and coming actress who wants Jake to invest in her upcoming movie and promises him "anything" for his financing. There is considerable drinking, hard partying, and the impression that Jake's relationship with Laura questionable who seduces him to get what she wants. Parental guidance is suggested, although it does portray a modern day retelling of the prodigal son who rises to the top only to lose it all in the end. I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars and the lesson you take away from this one is timeless and that a family's love is always unconditional.

The Perfect Summer - DVD Review

Moving from everything you know and leaving your past behind to start over is hard enough. Especially for 17-year-old Jake Reynolds. He has already lost his father just last summer and now his mother, Alyssa (Sydney Penny) has left their family home in Chicago to move in with her father, Lou Reynolds (Erik Roberts) in North Carolina. She thinks the beach town is the perfect place for Jake to find his roots and perhaps a fresh start at a new life. But Jake is pretty determined to stay resentful of his situation despite how welcoming his grandfather is. The one thing he isn't expecting is to learn that cell phone coverage and Wifi isn't something that is available and he will have to seek it out in town at the nearby surf shop and cafe owned by Cody (Jason Castro, American Idol).

Jake thinks he may have found something to interest him beside the internet when he meets Kayla, a beautiful surfer girl who seems interested in him. But things go from bad to worse, when Kayla's ex boyfriend Tyler seems to think that Jake better find a new interest and hurry. Kayla reminds him that they are no longer a couple and she can do whatever she wants with her time and see anyone she pleases. But like all good bullies, that only adds fuel to the fire. No matter where Jake goes, trouble with Tyler follows and soon he is shown just how forceful they can be when they beat him up and break the surfboard his grandfather has loaned him.

Ashamed and feeling less than worthy, Jake feels that moving back to Chicago might be better than trying to fit in with his grandfather. His mother has found an ideal job working as a travel agent and believes they are finally on the right track. But there is always hope in starting over and learning to never live with regrets, something his grandfather has learned after leaving his own daughter behind. He offers to teach Jake how to surf, but the one thing Jake never realizes is that his grandfather is a surfing legend until he learns to trust and accept things on his own terms.

I received The Perfect Summer compliments of Word Films and Edify Media for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. This is such a great movie because it focuses on handling issues within the family from bullying, to regrets, to sobriety and shows how God's grace can give us all a fresh start at life and to begin to live our lives without regrets. Everyone can have a second chance if we are willing to leave our past mistakes behind us! This is such a great DVD for the entire family and the surfing is amazing. I easily give this a 5 out of 5 stars and family approved by the Dove Foundation and Uplifting Entertainment as their original movie!

Iesodo: Love DVD Review

Not since Veggie Tales has there been a great series for parents to provide visual entertainment for their children with great lessons to encourage further communication with your kids. Now there is, with Iesodo, pronounced Yay-Sa-Doe, meaning The Way of Jesus, which is a white dove in the bird world that represent the persona of Jesus. As this series begins, we are introduced to the family of birds that reside in a place called Cypress World on the Sea of Gailee that share two episode in each DVD filled with amazing and beautiful animation and music geared just for your kids.

I was invited to review Iesodo: Love where you introduced to Birds of a Feather, Fish Together. Jacob and Jack, pelican brothers, seem to have nothing in common besides their ability to argue. It seems that the fish they have been tasked to gather for the Finches wedding will go unfulfilled unless they can find a way to work together instead of constantly remaining competitive. But it will take the wisdom of Iesodo to teach them that they can be more successful if they can put their differences aside and help the Finches by providing an abundant source of fish for their wedding.

In the next episode, Love Your Enemies, teaches your children what it is like when people are treated with kindness over being treated with greed. When the birds have to provide taxes to Zacheus, the Tax Collector, they find that no matter how much they provide, he still wants more. It shows what happens when selfishness takes over someone's life and of course, Iesodo comes along to show him how far a little kindness goes instead.

I received Iesodo: Love DVD compliments of Zaya Toonz, Rollman Entertainment, Capital Christian Distribution and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. This is such a brilliant series that you will want to make sure you collect all three, Love, Faith and Believe in the series. Directors for the series include Brian E. Ray whose credits consist of Muppet Babies, My Little Pony Tales and Ed, Ed, and Eddy, as well as Colin Brady, whose credits include Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and A Bug's Life. Brady also served as the former animation supervisor for Pixar Animation Studios. Producer Eric S. Rollman, President/CEO of Rollman Entertainment, formerly served as President of Production for Fox Kids and Marvel, and writer/producer Rob Loos is an Emmy Nominee and writer/producer for McGee and Me! Christmas Lamb, Kids 10 Commandments and Touched by an Angel. The Iesodo series also features the voice of Erin Bethea (Fireproof, Amazing Love) as Maggie. So as you can see this is a collaborative effort utilizing some of the best talents to bring you something wonderful for teaching your child biblical concepts that they will LOVE. I easily give this series a 5 out of 5 stars. My only complaint is that I wish this was available when I was growing up! Run time is about 55 minutes and contains some great bonus features like Bible verses, music videos and much more.

Nashville , Tennessee- When Calls the Heart Produced and directed by Michael Landon Jr. and inspired by the best-selling books by Janette Oke, tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young high society teacher receiving her first classroom post in a prairie town in the Western Frontier. Also stars Lori Loughlin as Abigail Stanton, a widow and mother whose husband, along with a dozen other miners, was killed in an explosion at the local mine. When Calls the Heart- “Lost and Found” is a feature length film from the first two episodes of the When Calls the Heart television series. When Calls the Heart television series debuted on the Hallmark Channel to more than 3 million viewers, making it the No. 2 for the night on all of cable for the primary telecast at 9 p.m and No. 3 overall in households.Distributed by Word Entertainment, The DVD will be available to purchase in Christian Retail February 25th, 2014.

Synopsis“When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a 19th century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.

My Review:

I've been completely addicted to this series since I watched the original movie When Calls The Heart. Then I was excited to learn that the Hallmark Channel had decided to pick this one up as a series and continue the story from best selling author Janette Oke. In this DVD, When Calls The Heart: Lost and Found, we find that Elizabeth Thatcher has left her wealthy and prominent life to journey west to become a teacher in Coal Valley. She believes despite all her father's misgivings she can do what they believe she can't. Armed with nothing more than her clothes and some books, she is soon the victim of a stage coach robbery that leaves her with little more than the clothes on her back. She arrives at the request of the women of Coal Valley that have suffered the loss of their husbands and older children in a mining explosion. Their only hope is that Elizabeth can educate their children so that they don't have to become miners when they grow up.

But Elizabeth isn't at all prepared for what she is hoping for and thus no matter how hard she struggles to fit in, she is more of a challenge than she thinks. From learning to deal with issues that the children are facing to establishing the school in a saloon during the day, there are numerous laughs to be found along the way. Elizabeth's biggest ally is Abigail  Stanton who has lost both her husband and son in the mining explosion. Yet both women persevere despite all the odds against them. Abigail dispenses motherly wisdom to Elizabeth when she feels overcome by the challenges facing her on the frontier and the two become friends.

Jack Thornton arrives as someone Elizabeth's father has hired to watch over his daughter while she insists on taking up the teaching in Coal Valley. Soon the sparks fly between the two even though they fight the attraction brewing between them. Yet after some time, Elizabeth soon discovers that Jack is more than just a friend and the harder they try to fight their romantic feelings the more they each are drawn closer together.

I received When Calls the Heart: Lost and Found compliments of Word Films, The Hallmark Channel and Edify Media Inc for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for my honest review and the opinions expressed are strictly my own unless otherwise noted. It's so wonderful to know that in a world where choices in television and movie entertainment is becoming challenging for families that a series like When Calls the Heart comes along. Completely suitable for all ages in your family it reminds me of Little House on the Prairie from my own childhood. This series is directed by Michael Landon Jr and produced and written by Brian Bird and will be one that I am sure you will LOVE. My entire family LOVES this series from my youngest daughter at 15 to my husband. This DVD will be the start of an incredible journey for you and your family and one I can easily give a 5 out of 5 stars too! This is the first DVD in the series!

When Calls The Heart - DVD Giveaway

What happens when you blend together two very different periods in time into a poignant movie? For me, you get a sensational movie to speaks to both your heart and soul! Think Dowtown Abbey meets the old west and you have the backdrop to When Calls The Heart, a family movie from Michael Landon Jr and Word Films.

This is the film adaptation of the story by best selling author Janette Oke about Elizabeth Thatcher (Poppy Drayton) who wishes to make a difference in her life by using her teaching skills to work in a school. But soon after meeting with Mr. Higgins, she learns the only way she'll be able to get a teaching position is if she is willing to do whatever it takes to show Mr. Higgins just how grateful she truly is. However Mr. Higgins isn't suggesting the same type of gratefulness that Elizabeth is. She is horrified to learn that when she declines his proposition, the only available teaching position he offers her, is one out west in Coal Valley that he believes she will never take. Being the daughter of a prominent high society family, she feels confident she should prove them all wrong, even her parents who believe that the horrors of living on the west will be more than she can handle.

Her sister Julie, even goes so far to prove her point by suggesting she live in the old caretakers cottage on the family estate without aid of servants to cook and clean for her. She doesn't expect Elizabeth to take the wager and believes her strong determination to prove her family wrong will ultimately win. But Julie isn't about to be swayed. She takes it upon herself to make sure that Elizabeth is an uncomfortable in the cottage as possible even using some hints from an old family diary she discovers locked in her parents safe to help speed along the wager.

However armed with the determination of not only in proving her family and Mr. Higgins wrong, Elizabeth immerses herself in the diary of her Aunt Elizabeth (Maggie Grace) who left the family to head west for a teaching position herself in Pine Springs and chronicles just how difficult it was but how perseverance and faith in God allowed her to triumph where others believe she would fail. The movie toggles between the story of both Elizabeth's living in different time periods but with similar circumstances that cheer one another to move forward in their quest to do what each of them believes is a calling in their own heart to make a difference.

I received When Calls the Heart compliments of Word Films and Edify Media for my honest review and did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable one. My only wish is for more of this series. My youngest daughter when we viewed the trailer couldn't wait for the movie to come in the mail to review. She was anticipating this one as much as I was. We were not disappointed when we literally watched it the same day we got it. She even cried during the movie but it goes to show just how much storms will try our character and faith but in the long run, it truly is worth the effort. Hands down, a perfect 5 out of 5 star rating in our opinion and one we have added to our own personal family library collection. Coming Home for Christmas ~ Giveaway and Review

As long as you have siblings, you are bound to come to a point where conflict ensues no matter how great the relationship. Such is the case for sisters Kate ( Carly McKillip) and Melanie (Britt McKillop) O'Brien who have remain close despite their differences at least while they were young. Kate has always lived in the shadow of her sister Melanie, who was outgoing in school, always had plenty of boys who wanted to date her and has always been beautiful and successful at anything that crosses her path. Quite different from Kate who was shy and didn't see herself as beautiful when hidden behind the glasses she needed to wear. During a family Christmas, the O'Brien family decided to incorporate a time capsule to be opened at a later date. It was during that time that the division in the O'Brien family began. When Kate buried her beloved sisters favorite marionette in the backyard as her contribution. In order to discover the time capsule, all members of the family must be present because they each possess a portion of the clue to find it again.

Only the family never dreamed that years later, their family would be torn apart. When Kate discovers that Melanie's soon-to-be husband is busy flirting at their wedding with a bridesmaid, Kate storms out telling her sister she can't be a part of watching her destruction of the perfect life. Without telling her the specifics, she abruptly leaves and places the parents at odds now that the girls are much older. Somehow the parental authority doesn't hold much weight. When faced with the dismiss of their daughters relationship, even Al (George Canyon) and Wendy( Amy Jo Johnson) begin to fall apart in their marriage beginning when the family home goes into foreclosure and they end up in another home. Now faced with no longer having anything in common, Wendy and Al decide a separation and divorce are their only hope for a future.

However when the girls learn that their parents are divorcing based on the problems stemming from Kate and Melanie's conflict, they decide to see if one last family Christmas in their old home will be just the right about of kindling to fan the flames of restoration for all of them. Only now the family home has been sold to Mike (Ben Hollingsworth) a Marine veteran and woodworker. Is is possible to pull off the ultimate Christmas miracle? You'll have to pick this one up to find out.

I received Coming Home for Christmas by director Vanessa Parise and Fly By Promotions for my honest review and did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review. This is such a heart warming family movie that I believe everyone can relate to. For me, even though my brother and I were close, we had our moments that undoubtedly tested our parents resolve. I love how they are willing to work together despite their differences and try hard to work through things without finding forgiveness with one another first. We see how well that works later in the movie. This is a movie about hope, faith and forgiveness despite how things may initially look on the outside and is a wonderful warm movie to begin the Christmas season with. I'd rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and will look forward to incorporating this into our Christmas movie time each year. Finally a great movie with a message that is perfect for families.

The Confession

I'm a huge fan of family friend movies and LOVE the Hallmark Channel. Now I've got the perfect review and giveaway just for you. Beverly Lewis is one of the best selling authors on Amish fiction and has been blessed enough to not only have one of her famous series made into a movie with The Shunning but now the second in the The Heritage of Lancaster County Series, The Confession is now ready to be released on DVD on June 11th.

In this latest movie, we once again follow Katie Lapp (Katie Leclerc, TV's "Switched at Birth), who we left off in The Shunning learning that she was adopted by an Amish couple and was born English. Her birth mother was searching for Katie but her Amish parents kept both of them apart. Only when learning that her birth mother was dying of cancer, did Katie's Amish mother tell her the truth. Now we find ourselves at the beginning of that journey for Katie to find her mother, Laura Mayfield-Bennett (Sherry Stringfield, TV's "ER"), a socialite now living in New York. She learns from her doctors that she has only weeks left to live before she succumbs to cancer and her only wish in life is to find Katie.

Her husband, Dylan Bennett, is struggling with addiction to alcohol and gambling and she feels if he doesn't get help there won't be anything left of her estate and the foundation she's worked so hard to build. When her husband learns he is being cut out of the will, he is desperate  to satisfy his outstanding gambling debt with some ruthless loan sharks. He learns that Katie is searching for her birth mother, Laura Bennett and soon comes up with a plan to appease his gambling debt and get back in his wife's good graces again but hiring a stand in to act as the long lost daughter. Since Laura has never met the real Katie Lapp and is at the end of her life, she is desperate to believe that Katie has come home at last.

I received The Confession compliments of Sony Pictures, Affirm Films/Provident Films, and Edify Media for my honest review on this DVD and received no monetary compensation for a favorable review. The only flaw I saw in this movie is that the actress who played Katie Lapp (Danielle Panabaker) in The Shunning is different than in The Confession so if you are watching them back to back, there is a disconnect between the character of Katie Lapp. I prefer the first actress from The Shunning but the story overall is amazing. The depths to which the husband will go to make money off of his dying wife is extraordinary and has you rooting for her to throw him out and discover the truth. It's only when someone from Katie's past shows up that things get interesting in the Bennett household. Now I can't wait for the next movie in the Hickory Hollow series and hope that Katie can truly find happiness in either her English life or her Amish one.

This movie was directed by Michael Landon Jr and has a running time of approximately 88 minutes. I had the opportunity to review The Shunning on DVD and think this make a wonderful sequel to the series. If you haven't seen The Shunning, I would suggest watching that one first to understand the back story to Katie's Amish upbringing and why the desire to find her birth mother is so strong. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion. For more information about The Confession, Beverly Lewis or where to preorder a copy of this DVD today, please click on the links below:

Ring The Bell ~ DVD Review and Giveaway

I love it when I find a movie that really speaks to your heart deep down inside and creates such a lasting impression, you find yourself thinking about it long after it's over. That is just what you'll find in the latest movie, Ring The Bell available on DVD from Provident Films. Ring the Bell is a calling to those individuals who still don't know what they are looking for in this world, but know that no matter what they have tried so far, it doesn't last. This is a calling to come to know God, in your own time and in your own way.

Ring the Bell is about a prideful and self confident big city sports agent Rob Decker (Ryan Schaeon), who believes there is nothing he can't do or no one he can't sign. He represents the "best of the best, because he is the best of the best." He believes he is truly on top of his game as the owner of Decker Sports and all those who work for him should have the same attitude and motivation. When he locates the next "big thing" with small town high school student Shawn Hart, he is more than confident that he can get him signed. He is challenged to get Shawn Hart signed when his associate tells him he can't leave tell because of his son's game. So he heads up to Middletown to show his company's employees that he's still at the top of his game.

However God's got other plans for Rob Decker. When his car breaks down and he has to spend some time in Middletown trying to convince Sean Hart that his future awaits with a simple signed contract that will change his life. But the more time that Rob spends in Middletown, the more the town and it's residents begin to grow on him in ways he never dreamed or imagined possible, from the perky inn keeper, Maggie (LOVE her personality and quirky way of seeing positives in every little thing she does), to the loveable mechanics that will fix Rob's car once they figure out where the engine is!

The best part about this movie is the powerful message of grace and what it means to make the decision to come to know God in your life. Those that do, get the chance to Ring the Bell and let everyone else know about it. With Christian artists like Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns and Matthew West adding to the cast, it really makes the movie family friendly. Even notable baseball athletes Casey Bone, Ben Zobrist, John Kruk and Rick Sutcliff are part of the action. This is HANDS DOWN one of the best movies I've had the opportunity to watch and review with my entire family and they agree, it's a family favorite in our home now!

I received Ring The Bell compliments of Provident Films and Flyby Promotions for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. This is one YOU won't want to miss out on. If you love movies like Fireproof, Courageous and Facing the Giants, pick this one up. Already people are talking about this movie and how it is changing lives forever. This movie is perfect for all ages and I would encourage everyone to check this one out. 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and that means not only do I highly recommend it, but it's one we will undoubtedly will watch over and over again. It's the perfect movie to share with those struggling to make their own decision to accept Christ and who knows may in fact Ring The Bell in their own time.

Break Away - DVD Review and Giveaway

I am super thrilled lately at the opportunity to review some great Christian Family DVD's and the latest from Word Films, the makers of inspirational films like Faith Like Potatoes and Journey To Grace, has launched it's newest one, Break Away. Break Away is the inspiring story based on actual events chronicling the story of a hard working husband that loses his job and is forced to use what he has and let God multiply it. It takes place in South Africa and accounts Francois' challenge of providing for his family after losing his job. He is forced to use what he has, including an old bicycle. With the help of his "black sheep" brother, a bicycle shop owner and pro-cyclist, Francois makes some life-changing discoveries about his life, career, and faith in God.

This is a powerful look at what so many are experiencing all over the world in these economic hard times. What would you do, if no matter where you looked for a job, they all seemed to come up empty handed. Not only that by the collection calls continue for your credit cards and mortgage, but with no money in sight, you have to make the best of what you have. I think what really touches the heart of the viewer the most, is that this isn't a quick fix, and that Francois and his family really struggle with the same issues we all do. How can we have faith in God when it seems like our prayers are going unanswered at times. How as the man, the main financial provider, in his family, he feels like this is a personal burden and ultimately his responsibility to provide for them. The solution isn't an easy one and you find yourself rooting for Francois the entire time. His ability to create something from nothing is mind-blowing and really pushes us to think outside the box in answers to our own problems.

I received Break Away from Word Films compliments of Blogger Gateway for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. Because this movie was filmed in South Africa, at times, the accents can be a bit difficult to understand. However, that does not take away from the impact of the story. This DVD runs 113 minutes and really encourages us to have faith when it seems like the odds are truly against us. I personally rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars.

Thanks to the generous folks at Word Films, they are offering a giveaway copy of this DVD to one lucky follower of my blog, Reviews From The Heart. Here are the details to enter.

Veggie Tales: The Little House That Stood - DVD Giveaway and Review

I would hardly think there isn't a person alive who hasn't heard of Veggie Tales! Now they have introduced a new DVD, The Little House That Stood along with your favorite Veggie Tales characters Bob and Larry. Once more Bob and Larry are trying to answer two different show requests, one to do a take on Mother Goose Stories and the other for a parable like Jesus told from the Bible. Like all wonderful DVD's prior, this one does a wonderful job at incorporating the two and helping children learn about making good choices.

In the first part of the video, we are introduced to a retelling of the children's classic of The Three Little Pigs. This time the story takes place in Cabbageville where three different builders are undergoing to tasks of home development, Larry chooses to build his homes from straw and give them that country feel and they are green friendly too! Mr. Lunt choose the bricks because after all, nothing is stronger than bricks! Then Bob, (the builder) decides to opt for sticks but instead has learned from experience that the foundation is what is important. Soon a building competition ensures for Builder of the Year. The three pigs come to town in hopes of buying homes and each chooses a different one due to their preferences. When the weather man indicates a massive rain storm that could flood the town, who's choice will be the wisest?

For intermission, we are once again introduced to a catchy new song Happy Tooth Day in the Silly Songs with Larry segment. Soon you'll find yourself humming along with this one long after the DVD is over.

In the final segment of this DVD, we are introduced to The Good Egg of Gooseville, where Bob the Tomato (disguised as Humpty Dumpty) is now cast as the friendly mayor of Gooseville. He's a busy mayor who spends time dealing with all the neighbors complaints and soon finds that the stress he's dealing with is causing him to crack his shell. While searching for a way out, he finds the perfect vacation, the vacation all about Me and thinks this will be the answer to all his problems. But with the Mayor gone, who will solve all the neighbors issues like removing the splinter from Miss Muffet's Tuffet? Or how will Goldilocks find more porridge? The end result will literally crack you up!

I received The Little House That Stood compliments of Big Idea Pictures and Flyby Promotions for my honest review. My family has quite literally grown up on Veggie Tales and when the opportunity came along to review this DVD, my entire family said "YES!" Mind you that the youngest in our household is 14. We thoroughly enjoyed this trip down memory lane as a family over dinner one night and all agreed this one is a hands down 5 out of 5 family friendly stars classic with a valuable lesson included. My 14-year-old daughter commented "that's why its important to always make sure you have a firm foundation on anything you do!" Guess the lessons still apply all these years later.

Bonus features on this DVD included a History of Mother Goose, behind the Scenes at Big Idea, Happy Tooth Day Sing-Along, Discussion Guide and so much more. Running time is approximately 49 minutes and includes a preview to the next Veggie Tales DVD coming soon! Three Hearts ~ DVD Review and Giveaway

How far would you be willing to go to risk saving your child's life? Three very beautiful lives were put to that test along with their families as they have been waiting, some for over ten years to have heart surgery that will save their lives. This is their personal journey through Samaritan's Purse as they take much needed children and bring them to the United States for a surgery that may save their life.

Join Cissie Graham Lynch, the granddaughter of Billy Graham as she begins her own journey as an intern working with Samaritan's Purse in Boone, North Carolina that finds children that need heart surgery. If they are eligible, they arrange for them to fly here and have surgery that will forever alter not only the lives of the child or teen but also their families and host families here in the U.S.

The three lives that are showcased here in this movie called Three Hearts, brings Otga, a 16 year-old boy who wishes to live as a herder in Mongolia but has had to drop out of school because he was teased because he couldn't keep up with his peers. His heart defect keeps him short of breath most days and he can no longer ride the horses he raises even though he dreams of doing it one day.

Uugna is 18 years old and has faced a life of living with the recent death of his father, now just him and his mother while he struggles just to make it through the day without dying.

Both boys are from Mongolia. 99% of children born with fatal heart defects such as Otga and Uugna have won't make it to the age of 15 and almost all of them die by the age of 25, so they are both literally living on borrowed time.

The youngest to make the journey is the breath-taking, adorable angel known as Toogi. She is three years old and most likely won't live to be 6. Coming from Mongolia in the Gobi desert, her family has struggled with trying to find a way to raise money to pay for her operation. Now she has hope.

This film will take you into their journey in hopes of a new life and in the process will find the love and faith of God along the way. This movie will tug on all your heart-strings and leave you laughing, crying, and restoring your faith in God above through witnessing their journey. A must see movie for the entire family and one I am so happy to be able to share, thanks to Propeller Films and Samaritan's Purse for the opportunity to review this movie for my honest review. This is an amazing "Life Changing Movie" as quoted by my 13 year old daughter who watched it with me and rates a hands down 5 out of 5 stars!

Now comes the really beautiful part, thanks to their generosity they are providing a giveaway copy of this DVD to one lucky follower of my blog, Reviews From The Heart. Here's all you need to do to enter:

1. Be a follower of my blog, Reviews From The Heart.

The Mighty Macs DVD Review and Giveaway

It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time ... and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.

Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.

From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!

While it appears the Macs don't have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.

Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing's for certain: there's never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

THE MIGHTY MACS is based on the incredible true story of the 1971-72 Immaculata College team that started in obscurity but became the original Cinderella story in women's basketball. This team of pioneers went from barely making that inaugural tournament to the first dynasty in their game. And Cathy Rush, the woman that was ahead of her time, became immortalized when she was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

THE MIGHTY MACS stars Carla Gugino as Cathy Rush; David Boreanaz as her husband, NBA referee Ed Rush; Marley Shelton as Sister Sunday; and Academy Award and Tony Award winner Ellen Burstyn as Mother St. John. The film was written, directed, and produced by Tim Chambers. The film's executive producers are Pat Croce, the former president of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, and Vince Curran, a successful businessman and former basketball star at Penn. Curran and Chambers are founders and partners of Quaker Media.

As a concerned parent, we are always looking for great movies that have a truth about them, a moral message to be gained from simply just heading to the movies for a night of family fun and entertainment, and it's such an honor to share this one with my readers. For those of you that are huge fans of family-feel good movies like Fireproof, Courageous or Seven Days To Utopia, then I know you will want to see this one. This movie is now playing in select theaters near you. I received this opportunity to preview this before it was released compliments of Propeller, Quaker Media and Affirm Films, and can't wait for you all to see it. Hands down another 5 out of 5 stars!

One of the most exciting things this year has been to be able to view some incredible family films and today is no exception. Based on a true story, Dean Cain and Luke Schroder star in movie based on the book, The Legend of Mickey Tussler.

A Mile In His Shoes tells the story of a failing baseball coach Arthur Murphy (Dean Cain) who is trying to find a way to salvage his minor league teach, The River Rats. Taking a drive to interview a prospective candidate who may just turn out to be the next big thing, Murphy has a minor accident while trying to find his way into town. When he seeks the aid from a young boy, Mickey Tussler searching for his lost pig, Oscar to use a phone, he soon discovers God has bigger plans in store for Murphy and Tussler.

Watching Tussler 'smash apples' as he's feeding the pigs, Murphy discovers the boy can deliver the heat in his accurate pitches to throw apples into a tin barrel. Sensing a bright spot in both their lives, Murphy must convince the Tussler family of Mickey's potential at pitching baseball. In the DVD, the Wylds, the viewers are taken into a futuristic journey of the prodigal son whose goal it is to reach the Celestial City and find his father. However he is told to beware of the path that is wide and those that would seek to deceive him along the way. The Wylds is a DVD that is geared to families looking for alternatives with a message of hope. It is produced by a company called Good Outlaw Studios and while it has a great message and storyline, some of the effects are cartoonish at best.

I would rate this movie at a 2 out of 5 stars just based on the message and storyline alone. Its special effects are along the lines of Spykids and leave a lot open to the imagination. Yet for me, this was not a movie I couldn't recommend with higher ratings, but it may be a movie that you would enjoy. It is an approved Dove family film.

I received this DVD compliments of Good Outlaw Studios for my honest review and thanks to the generous folks at Good Outlaw Studios, they are offering a giveaway copy to one lucky reader of this blog. The Way Home DVD - Giveaway and Review

So many times as families we search for great movies with a message. Too often we fail in our attempts because companies simply aren't gearing that kind of movie any longer, yet I have come across some greats lately with my latest, The Way Home that I received compliments of Lionsgate Media and Propeller to review.

The movie based on a true story is about a man named Randy Simpkins, (played by Dean Cain from The New Adventures of Superman) who is like your typical family man. He spends countless hours trying to make enough so that his wife Cristal can stay at home and take care of raising their three boys. However lately Randy has been working way too much and neglecting his number one priority, his family.

When Cristal makes plans to take the family away on a much needed vacation to the beach, she has to call Randy at work and tell him to come home. He had promised her he wasn't even going to go into work that day and now he is late coming home. Meanwhile, the responsibility has fallen on her shoulders to load up the family van while taking care of her youngest Joe, whose two.

When Randy finally makes it home, Cristal is in the final stages of being packed and ready to leave, but needs to make a final check through the house. She asks Randy to take the last two bags by the front door and load them into the van, and make sure to put Joe in his car seat.

Randy and Joe have a confrontation when Joe refuses to get in the van insisting that he wants to go to his Pa-Pa's house instead on his tricycle. While Joe tells him to stay by the van while he grabs the last of the bags and head inside, Joe promises to stay close. However when Randy gets the last minute impulse to check his work email before leaving, he is caught by his wife. They both grab their stuff and head outside, where Joe is now missing. Thinking he is doing nothing more than playing hide and seek, the parents spread out and begin the search. However after 30 minutes, it seems like something more has happened and the real search for Joe begins.

This movie has a great message behind it all as Randy gets an opportunity to see what life without his family would be like before it's too late and comes with a great recommendation from me as a must see movie. I would easily rate this movie a 5 out of 5 stars because in today's world where we find ourselves so busy, its easy to lose sight of what really matters most. The movie is 91 minutes long and produced by Red Five Entertainment and Lionsgate. It was also the winner of the Pearl Award at the International Family Film Festival.
